Wouldn't the doors lead into the building? I realise the historical front face goes a bit higher than the roofs behind, but it's not a free-standing facade with an empty yard behind.

So was that the way it originally looked. I thought they'd removed the inside and built something else in its place. Looks like its a different scale

you'd think they would cut the 2 together to make sure they fit properly.🙂

I see the reason I was thinking something new had been built is that at least one of those sections with the steep sloping roofs has become a residential space. So was that converted rather than rebuilt.

There needs to be a hybrid word between unsurprising and disappointment for this

    Yeah is anyone surprised?

I'm more surprised that a hairdresser was allowed to open on the bridge.

What next, a Supermacs or a Starbucks?

May not be vandals at all. Specialized curved glass like this can fail. Wonder has it been expertly examined yet. Has been like this since 26th Aug, was no obvious mark on the pane when I seen it to indicate somebody had thrown something or kicked it

Whenever I drive over Salmon Weir there are way more pedestrians than on the new bridge.

Just to note, 1 footpath on the old bridge will be removed as part of the cross city link project, only the weir facing path will remain

So all the people still using it will be crammed onto one narrow pavement.

Poster on Page 1 suggests: Ideally, all pedestrians and bikes should use the new foot bridge and the SW bridge should be exclusively for vehicles. I saw an article in the Advertiser this week referring to the fact that the foot bridge will be one way, with one of the paths being left open on the bridge. This sounds disappointing but I'll wait to see some concrete plans.

The weir facing side is a protected view so they had to keep that path. The path removal on the other side is replaced by the new bridge

The weir facing path may get widened when they begin works, no idea, no detailed plans have been released for that afaik

I walked back from the university the other week.

The new bridge looked like a place to hang out, old one looked like it was for people aiming to get somewhere.

This is as expected, I would be amazed if it had changed when no pedestrian crossing was added to the scheme.

Salmon Weir Bridge is still the most desirable crossing point, narrow carraigeway, traffic speeds low.

I cycle over the old bridge every day. The new bridge isnt suitable for cycling on, its difficult to turn left towards Nuns Island off it (very high curbs) and Id be afraid of hitting a pedestrian

Exactly. That was part of the brief, to create a focal point for locals and tourists alike, by offering new views of the river, the Cathedral, angling activities, the canal and the mill race - removed from traffic, and offering a relaxing place close to water and nature, right in the city.

This was pointed out earlier on in the year on this thread; "the bridge is obviously much more than a bridge, it's a feature & somewhere to pause, relax & discover"

Other unlikely suggestions include “The Bridget McBridgeface Bridge”, “The Waste of Good Money Bridge”, “Bucky Boulevard” and “The Mike Denver Bridge”. https://connachttribune.ie/public-float-serious-and-not-so-serious-name-suggestions-for-new-salmon-weir-bridge/

Let's make them likely namings 😊

    Just reading this.

Galway, home of Ireland's most uninspiring tourist attractions: Spanish Arch, and Cathedral Bridge.

Yet you claim people are enjoying it and relaxing, hanging out on and around it, not hanging themselves off it. Just because Galway city doesn't inspire you to go out and enjoy it like others doesn't mean it's uninspiring. It's just uninspiring to you.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 27,094 ✭✭✭✭Mrs OBumble

Nope. It looks like a place to hang out. Thankfully people aren't hanging out there so far, so it's been safe to use so far. We'll see what happens when summer comes.

And I actually find Galway inspiring. Great music. Excellent pubs. Interesting restaurants. Good base for visiting other interesting places in the west. But the so-called tourist attractions - nah.

No, you don't get it. Galway is in itself a tourist attraction. Everything mixed up, the people, the features, the culture, music, food etc... Nobody goes to Galway just to see the Spanish Arch and the Cathedral Bridge.

You also spotted that the new pedestrian bridge is a place to hang out. That's the point of it! Why you'd wish for people not to spend time enjoying it is beyond me, it won't be dangerous to use if there's people there, it's very strong and will take a good bit of weight and you're less likely to be attacked if there's lots of people around.

I don't think you get Galway. I don't think you ever will.

bridge will be christened ‘Droichead an Dóchais’ – Bridge of Hope – at an official naming ceremony in May

Is Galway really that bad? Have you ever heard the like in any other town?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,594 ✭✭✭what_traffic

Just cannot see that getting used.

"Samon eile" / Samonella is the one I hear people using these days. Which aint great.

What a terrible name. Who sign's off on these things? Honestly?

Bridge of Hope??? What does that actually mean?

What hope does a bridge offer?

Might as well have called it The Christmas cracker bridge for all of the relevance it offers

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 27,094 ✭✭✭✭Mrs OBumble

They probably Hope that people will use instead of the Salmon Weir bridge. Good luck with that lads.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 35,078 ✭✭✭✭breezy1985

"Bridge of Hope" is at least much better than "pedestrian and cycling bridge" because whoever thought that this bridge is anyway suitable for cycling is has absolutely no clue.

The name means nothing, evokes no sense of place at all.

Not a fan of that name at all.
