I love the biodiversity bit at the end, absolutely no context or supporting information. It's like they had a 1,000 word minimum and came up short so had to stick in something, anything to fill it out.
Whatever benefits the greenway will bring to D15, it will come at a major cost to biodiversity.
Any updates on greenway progress? was thinking of doing a long run evening. ideally with some trail from Castleknock onwards.
e.g. is confey to louisa bridge open, or are other sections blocked now ? thanks
I've actually just posted a thread on this. They've only gone and re-sealed and re-fenced confey to louisa bridge with higher more formidable fences. I reckon they're going to be there for the long haul (the workers). Another year or two so they can show us their tarmac skills
There is some legal issue now it seems, according to our sister thread in Kildare forum, post #43 onwards. So you may well be correct about 'years'.

My goodness,
Thanks for the response and info, I was not aware. Very interesting, legal issues with no further details.
I think the fact that some of the local residents have been done out of a nice walking stretch for exercise, dogs, or general wellbeing is nuts. While some can simply pick a new daily route there's other folks living in the neighbouring estates that simply shouldn't have to. 3-6 months would have been acceptable a short delay included BUT this amount of time is a joke.
Hi, does anyone know if there’s an alternative to joining the road at Whitworth Road, when travelling outbound from the city? I.e. is there a canal path along that stretch that I’m missing? The traffic on the quays is getting to me a little of late!
there's a path on both sides of the canal on the section parallel to whitworth road IIRC?
Ok thank you- I will try it this evening and maybe keep my eyes open this time! Did a trial run earlier this year and totally missed the access to the path.
It's a few metres before the Whitworth Road junction - see https://goo.gl/maps/tFfWUzPeTa6ZsYw36
It's currently closed for greenway upgrades so I'd advise not trying it out this evening unless you want to venture into a construction site!
both sides of the canal are? there seem to be paths on either side.
though the southern side will take you onto eglinton terrace for 100m at the phibsboro end.
Both sides are closed yeah. Need to rejoin the canal at Des Kelly's at the Phisborogh end of the Whitmore Road.
Thanks all - glad I asked! Will follow the progress of the upgrades.
Drove over Cope Bridge at Confey earlier and saw a mini digger near the end of the works. Cycled over the bridge 90 minutes ago and whilst the digger was gone, so too was the hoarding. Could we be near this section being fully finished?
Roderic O'Gorman is circulating leaflets saying that planning for the D15 sections of the greenway will be submitted by the end of the year.
Allegedly some of the residents who expanded their gardens have been told to restore them to the original boundaries.
Proper order.
Delwood I presume?
I think there are a lot more gardens along Roselawn that now extend to the canal bank than anywhere else? Most of the roadways in Delwood run perpendicular to the canal and don't have houses backing onto the canal, and the few that are still seem to have a decent amount of wooded area between them and the canal.
The satellite imagery layer on Google maps is my main source for this for what it's worth.
Large number of them along Roselawn Road. Not sure why this is connected to the Greenway, as the Greenway runs on the opposite bank during this section.
Despite what Leo and other politicians are doing in terms of pandering to some residents, the plan is to use the northern bank...

Currently the only way to travel along the section is via the sourthern bank but this stretch is unsuitable for the upgrade works and the northern bank would be far more preferable.
Edit:
the greenway plans which are the contentious ones, call for the greenway to follow the southern bank of the canal as it passes roselawn - on this section, the southern side is pretty level with the canal and wide. it would then be carried on a bridge over the canal and hop to the northside somewhere along the stretch beside brompton green, and follow the northside of the canal then; so for the cul-de-sacs in delwood, it would only be the last two houses on each which could potentially be impacted, where they would have extended their gardens.
Yes.
There are no affected gardens in Roselawn
If you look at Drawing 22 of the Preferred Route, you will see that travelling from west to east, the route crosses the canal with a new bridge at Delwood, and travels along the southern side from there to Castleknock.
The first three or four houses from the bend on Roselawn Road may lose access to the canal, but the rest of Roselawn Road down to Castleknock Station are unaffected as the route is on the Southern side.
I stand corrected 👍️
so for the cul-de-sacs in delwood, it would only be the last two houses on each which could potentially be impacted, where they would have extended their gardens
The cul-de-sacs aren't affected; a number of them have bought the land and built houses on it, so it's just the strip that back on to the canal, along Delwood Park.
The major bone of contention for the cul-de-sacs will be whether or not there are access points into the greenway at the bottom of the streets (the last design had one).
they bought the land? i don't think that's correct; they expanded their gardens onto the land, but via adverse possession. only one house seems to have been built, at the canal end, and that's on delwood close. delwood close itself seems to have been lengthened by maybe 10m too.
There are two houses at the bottom of Delwood Close. I haven't been down the others in years so couldn't swear to it and have no clue how they came to own the land, I assumed it had been bought but maybe not.
It will be interesting to see how many of the residents do claim adverse possession for their gardens. The houses are there 50 years, so plenty of scope to have exceeded the 30 year statute bar. If Fingal and Waterways find themselves in CPO territory, this has not been budgeted for, either financially or time wise.
on google street view, the imagery may be out of date; looks like there was a site on one side in oct 2022 which there may have been a house built on since. definitely one has been completed opposite though.
the delwood residents association page states what you mention, though - 'extra garden space was legally sold to some residents by Waterways Ireland.'
would be curious about the use of 'some' - that leaves room open for some not having paid for the land they're using.
I'm sure some of them have not paid for the land - if you've been squatting for years with no issues, why would you?
But if they've been there for 30 years, the difference is moot, they'll still need to be bought out by CPO.
I'm not certain any of the gardens will be required at the rear of Delwood Park. If you look at the proposed route (sheet 22), it skates around the back of the existing gardens, and doesn't require additional space. This assumes of course that it possible to build the greenway on the land behind those gardens.
