Yes, financially, the war in Afghanistan was bankrupting Russia. It played an important part in the Kremlins decision to pull out of Afghanistan. Imagine what the war in Ukraine is doing to their finances now?
And the collapse of oil prices in the 80s.
Some argue that all wars boil down to economics. If one side can finance more they will win eventually.
Now rather than rolling their eyes at the official propaganda, Russian Internet commentators are finally calling out the official bs.
Per the Daily Telegraph:
The Ukranian battalions, who recently joined the counter offensive, trained by British special forces are now seemingly having an impact in the south. They have top notch western weaponry and were trained extensively in breaching the heavily fortified defenses that the Russian have
It was quoted by Ukrainian officials that they had only committed between 25-30% of their newly formed forces to the counter offensive.
They were probing looking for a weakness, with the hope, once found they could commit the rest. Obviously it didn't quite turn out that way, but they committed more and have been able to breach and make ground on both southern fronts. The vast minefields seemed to have caused the most trouble, one would expect the other lines of defensive will not be as hard. Once the Russian's are on the back foot, they won't have the time to mine the area as extensively as before.
Something interesting for a dull monday morning, just "rumors" but not out of the question.
Fair few reports of UAF definitely building momentum and reports of Russians throwing elite units into the mix to hold the defence lines. But progress is definitely more visual now.
It's been a long wait and a hard slog since Kherson for them, but def getting interesting now.
When I heard they were sending the VDV in to reinforce, all I could think of was this, lol
(Yes I know they are dangerous, but still....)
at the moment that is a kill pocket, the Ukrainians will need to round that out on both sides.
Chernobyl was the final nail in the coffin as it cost them billions they didn't have and opened up more of the Soviet world to the outside.
Saint Yevgeniy of Prig, painted with his beloved sledgehammer……… oh how I wish his face had met with it even just once……..
Happy enough his face met a SAM.
Yes, and Gorbachev admitted as much, by blaming Chernobyl for the collapse of the USSR. Communism might have been a good theory on paper, but the reality of corruption proved that it can never work in practice. As Xi is currently finding out.
It says it in the book and the book is from our mafia.
"Why are you even.ing questioning the book?". 😁
6–12 months and russia will go broke.
I'd say the chair in front of him on the plane had a similar impact. 😮
12 months is just 3 days away in Russian time 😁
The end of Wagner
UAF response?
I got the impression that Gorbachov approached Chernobyl in the spirit of not wanting to waste a good crisis. Or have I got it the wrong way around?
No statement from Wagner themselves ?
Hopefully this gets messy.
Interesting. 2 months ago it was all a cunning plan to get Prigozhin and his Wagner buddies "100 km from Kyiv'.
Hopefully, but I think what's more likely to happen is that the hardcore of Prig loyalists will be dealt with and the group will continue under a different name and tight control of the Kremlin.
Ya Prigo's big mistake was starting to actually believe this was really his army.
The next stooge will be under a tighter lease and have much less media profile I would imagine.
Wager group have no loyalties they are mercenaries money no 1
Spoke to 2 clowns but but mcgeror and then they mentioned Scott the convicted peodo jaw dropping moment .
How stupid do people have to be to believe RT, then blame CNN/BBC
Where did his jowels go?
Not the same thing as the sledge hammer effect, but I'd say that the voice recorder will have picked some very interesting noises while they were in free fall. And they would be lasting a lot longer than getting hit with a sledge hemmer, where I image, death is pretty instantaneous. But depending on your religious beliefs ( I doubt very much if religion figured very strongly in Wagner philosophy, except for propaganda purposes.) maybe during the decent for him and his fellow Wagnerite's time slowed down, and they got to experience a vision of hell for what to them would be many hours, before experiencing the real thing.
I don't really know what he was thinking TBH. The USSR was in crisis, and the last thing Gorbachev needed was Chernobyl. But in any case, it was thought to be the straw that broke Russia's back, and ended the USSR.
Not so much calling out the Russian propaganda as such, but paving the way for the "Brotherly Love" version ( IE- Peace negotiations) where its the dastardly Neo UkraNazi leadership are at fault and have to be removed, but the ordinary Ukrainians are our brothers at heart, and need to be rescued from Zelensky's clutches.
Probably because it's almost impossible now to spin how bad this is going for Russia.
Even the complete loopers seem unable to come up with much.
