Watching the mart in Gortnalea the auctioneer there must be the fastest lad to go through cattle in the country.
Saw him tonight when the lads around the ring would not open a heavy Bullock at 2k he opened him at 1600 and took him up to 2k in hundreds and then got an online 10 euro bid to get him out of trouble
Is he the guy with Northern accent Bass?
He is some man on the hammer. 30 seconds a lot. It was he made that mart. He is one of the very few auctioneers that knows the true value of stock.
He's worth anything & breath of fresh air
The nonsense that goes on in most marts taking 2-3mins to sell, eg opening at 800, drop to 5 to get 1st bid & sell at 900ish
That Auctioneer in Gortatlea knows the value of cattle, he averaged 20seconds a lot one night I was there with weanlings
Pat considene in ennis is the best judge of a beast and man that I've ever met. James in gortatlea is an absolute topper too, no messing at all.
monaghan
Does a share of the heavy cattle end up in the north from gortatlea in that the monaghan auctioneer also works in ballybay mart that exports cattle to the north
Another man on top of his game is David Quinn in carnew mart, he owns the mart and has a lot of the family working in the mart, as one guy up there reckons he knows how much is in your pocket, and takes no messing and sells seriously quick.
Imagine if ye were the farmer selling the animal and the auctioneer didn't get that €10 online bid 😏
Ya he is the Northern guy.
The animals took off after that he knew he was going to get the bid. The Bullock made about 200 more.
Saw him another night at a Weanling heifer show and sale tried to open a heifer at 3K. The lad he wanted to open her at it did not. She opened at a out 2.5 K took her to 3kmin 50 euro bids and K I left her down to the mad he want to open her for him at about 3.3k.
He turned to you man and said I told you she make it if you bid it you would never know.
Stops a lot of messing online in that he will give you only 4-5 seconds to counter bid. Lads that wait to enter bids at the last moment he has no time for. If you do not counter bid fast he knock the animal down to the other bidder.
TBF he will drop opening bids fast if animals are not getting bids and then take them back up fast. Lads who bid on line regular there bid fast because if you do not he will drop them to someone else.
Went with 9 HEX Bullocks last Thursday, all cost €220 each, March 2021 calves, from same local dairy farmer.
6 No HEX BK Avg 723.0 €1,990
3 No HEX BK Avg 693.0 €1,940
Between Vat Credit, Flat Rate Topup, less Entry Fees & Commission etc you can deduct €14.08 per animal - own transport
Probably would be done for ‘over fat’ if brought to factory.
Entry fees and commission very reasonable.
You would have been up on €40 locally here.
Gort mart Show and Sale about to start now (5.30pm) on LSL.
Gort Mart: Lmx Show & sale : 24th Aug for sale in Co. Galway for €0 on DoneDeal
Popped in to Roscommom mart yesterday forward store blks were a serious trade not a word about beef prices or cost of meal........
"In two years, Ukraine has seen its grain production almost halved, with forecasts of 25 million metric tons of corn and 17.5 million metric tons of wheat for 2023-2024, compared with 42 million metric tons of corn and 33 million metric tons of wheat in 2021-2022, according to the latest report from the US Department of Agriculture."
What will be the effect of the suspension of the Ukrainian grain deal? (lemonde.fr)
Low grain output will keep grain prices up. This in turn will keep up beef prices. Long-term I wouldn't be as excited about prices.
What the hell is going on in six mile bridge today?
On-line bidding not working, is it?
They have been stopping and starting all morning over mix ups it looks like. 5-10 min stop. Now they are stopped for the last 20 minutes. Maybe gone for tea but I have never seen them taking a break like it before?
Back working now. Technical glitch, they said.
They stoped in listowel like that until it was running properly
A real sign that online is here to stay.
I think it was the weighing scales ,they put in a bunch of heifers weighing 320kg but on reweigh 495kg
Cattle in the mart are holding up well enough all considered
It's hard to understand....I assume the lads buying know something I don't.....I assume beef prices will take off in 2024!
Cattle are always cheap in August. Add another 40-70kgs LW off grass and compare them November bought cattle.
When we finished cattle here, we always found that too. Challenge is to have your own cattle gone first, so you can buy back in.
Gortatlea was very dear Friday too, big jump in prices in the previous week.
Northern lads hoovering up a good share of cattle down in West cork too.
Factory's starting to ring around now for fat cows too.
Some French prices here, compliments of 'Farming Life at La Forge' .
At 2.55 mins - weanlings, last spring €3.94/Kg, now 3:54 to 3:64
At 17:45 mins - Cow prices now, €5.54/kg in factory
Some prices below from Dungarvan mart this morning. Don't think you'll be seeing these in the IFJ next week (apart from the CH bullocks maybe)
