An annoying thing on the 3 free podcasts on the GoLoud app - if you listen to the same podcast in 3 parts (i.e restart it twice) that's considered your 3 free podcasts.
I don't think that's fair.
Football Saturday was free podcast this weekend which was a surprise
I'll say one thing for Richie, he plays much better music than Tom Dunne when he's covering for him. I've heard him the past two nights driving home from gigs and he plays music Tom wouldn't dream of touching. He could push it a good bit more though.
Just subscribe for 2 free ones to start to get a feel for it, or just do a month for €5. I used to pay for it, but found I wasn't interested in the soccer stuff so free one is enough for me. I subscribe to the42 cause I like the rugby coverage, think it was €33 for a year (on special). That's why the OTB set up price was just mad, I'd probably have subscribed if they offered say rugby and sunday papers, but I'll use the free ones for the papers and plenty of rugby pods out there especially with RWC coming up.
Pat Kenny show now discussing transgenders competing in female sports which OTB and their tenner a month would never have to balls to tackle in case they had to express an opinion on it.
🙄🙄
They have covered that topic several times with Ross Tucker and Niall Moyna.
If you could have been arsed Googling it you would see that for yourself
Thanks. I'll check those out. I assume the presenters gave their opinion on the subject and just didn't tip toe around it?
Also was your googling able to find any OTB show with any members of the GPA who spoke out against the LGFA policy on the show at the time earlier in the year? If so you might point me in the right direction please.
They gave science based arguments as to how transgender athletes have an advantage. I'm assuming you want more hate filled conjecture.
I don't think you understand how Google works. Perhaps there is an evening class you can take at a slow pace
What was he playing out of curiosity?
What would the Second Captains offering be like in terms of hurling and boxing? Off the Ball isn’t bad on both.
Their hurling coverage wasn't bad this year, they had Jamie Wall and Malachy Clerkin on, usually once a week during championship season.
Mark Horgan, one of the producers, is a big boxing fan, but it's rarely covered on SC. Usually it's of there's an Irish angle (Katie Taylor) or if there's a wider issue to discuss.
Their GAA coverage is fairly shite i think. Jaime and Malacy offer nothing.
I might be better off with OTB so. I wouldn’t really want insights on hurling from those guys, and the OTB boxing coverage is often decent.
I found myself wanting to catch the Joe Molloy/Jamesie O Connor/AN Other chat every week during the league and championship way more than the second captains coverage.
Same with football. Molloy/Boyle/O Sullivan was far superior I thought to the second Captains gang even thought I always listened to all of the above on both podcasts in the end. Though McConville came back to second captains for a few pods at the end of the championship and brought a bit of bite back into it.
If Off the Ball pulled this subscription thing mid championship I'd be in a bind but I'm not missing it really. Will see next spring how I feel when the league starts back up. Will only sign up if they reduce the monthly amount though.
Would've always listened to the Sunday Paper Review but if Joe Molloy wasn't there it was never as good, and if Cliona Foley was on I never could stick it until the end. That's Off the Balls dilemma now, get Molloy onto more stuff to boost the quality. Doubt it'll happen with the rugby world cup coming up presuming Virgin are showing matches.
If you want a specialist GAA pod Smaller Fish is €5 per month and very good
And Joe off on his holidays from last night
Sonic Youth, Pavement, Hip-Hop, 60s Garage and a bunch of just started out Irish indie bands amongst other things. A nice change from Tom's endless diet of Beatles/Beach Boys/REM etc.
OTB rarely cover boxing.
Lots of good free ones out there like the Boxing News Magazine podcast
Tell me you don’t listen to Off The Ball without telling me you don’t listen to Off The Ball.
Complete, uninformed lies right here. OTB have had the guest Pat Kenny had on yesterday a number of times.
Doesn’t suit whatever narrative you want to paint about OTB being ultra woke or whatever the f*ck.
I don't care what the presenters think on anything, I want them to have guests who know their s##t on the topic giving science and evidence based analysis from world leaders. Not Ger Gilroy or Nathan Murphy talking at 110mph about a topic like they are talking in a pub.
To me, that's the biggest weakness of the OTB presenters with the exception of Joe and Will.
The only segment such loose talk is OK on is A Slight Tangent, because that's all that section is about really.
OTB are losing Joe Molloy away from being a terrible product. If he walked they are done for as a live show, let alone expecting people to pony up €10 a month.
They used to have Andy Lee on quite a lot but haven't heard him in a long time
Used to like Paul Kimmage on the show too but he fell out with them and hasn’t been on in years
Why did he fall out with them?
One of the things that drives me nuts about modern Off The Ball is when the football show is nothing but prerecorded interviews, but they don't even fill the show so they play the whole of that Give 'im the ball and a yard of grass song.
It's especially maddening because that's essentially all there is between two ad breaks.
Kimmage would fall out with his own shadow
He publicly called them out on something. Can't even remember what it was.
Was it around the time of him being dropped from BODs biography?
Ronan Mullen was a big loss also for their Boxing coverage
