I like this piece in that article posted above.
To understand how even small hills confer tactical advantages, it help to think of the height of hills in terms of buildings, rather than comparing them to mountains. A 9- or 10-meter hill might sound tiny—but it’s essentially the same height as a three-story buillding.
If a soldier attempts to use bumps in the ground as cover to approach a target, being higher up than an opponent is a major advantage. Cover is rendered less effective on the ground, while the height advantage conceals more of the person firing down.
A similar effect happens with armored vehicle. It is easier for an armored vehicle shooting down to secure a line of sight on targets than the opposite.
Even small advantages in elevation can have outsized effects.
"consider every single person who is ostensibly Russian, as potentially hostile"
That's been the standard operating procedure for Russian security for over 100 years.
Back to the frontline; I've seen the first utterances that Ukraine may have taken Hill 166 as previously identified by DailyKos in their article here:
Ukraine Update: Ukraine is about to reach the 'downhill' part of the Tokmak offensive—literally (dailykos.com)
Could be massive if it turns out to be true.
A "special operation" that takes only 1 night ?
I thought they were supposed to last over a year 🤣
In the night of August 24, the Ukrainian GUR in support with the Ukrainian Navy executed special operations at the Cape Tarkhankut, in Russian-occupied Crimea and eliminated Russian manpower and equipment. All objectives have been achieved and in addition the Ukrainian flag hoisted, without any Ukrainian casualties.
You love to read it and on the same night the Russians were shooting down their own too.
Not if one considers the support of Trump in America as a Cult.
As if Melania would mourn Trump! She'll be dancing beside the hearse!
Putler will respond the only way he knows how.
Expect a barrage of unguided (or poorly guided) ordnance showering over cilvilian areas in the next few days.
A Military analyst on sky news said as much. Said an explosion inside the plane is very very unlikely. One of the wings was detached , he reckons it was shot down.
WTF is Lindsey the Trump-Lickspittle Graham doing in Kyiv? His master's master won't be happy with him bigging up the Ukrainians
@nacho libre
The director of the CIA said it best:: "for Putin, revenge is a dish best served cold"
In this case, I'd say the revenge was served still fairly warm, maybe could do with a quick 30 seconds in the microwave. The insurrection only happened barely two months ago. There's no way Prigozhin had dropped his guard two months later or that Putin had thought that Prigozhin had relaxed. If Prigozhin was on the plane that blew up and crashed, some safety device he thought he had in place against Putin failed.
Plane was shot down it seems.
He's literally using russian double speak
I think it's clear he did not have as much support as he thought he had. If he had he'd not have stopped the march on Moscow. The idea that he stopped to avoid shedding Russian blood is a canard considering his troops had already killed 15 airservice men. Putin by decapitating the Wagner leadership has reasserted his authority and sent a shot cross the bow to any would be future dissenters. The foot soliders won't do anything ,they will follow the coin. A likely new Wagner boss will be put in place who is compliant.
Yeah, but they'll have to look both ways now won't they - at their leaders machinations and Wagnerites, never mind Ukrainian hit squads.
He also called climate change a hoax
Have the very considerable advantage of being ethnically and linguistically similar to citizens of Russia. Can fly under the radar etc. Must put the fear of God into Russian security when they have to consider every single person who is ostensibly Russian, as potentially hostile.
They have always been nervous around Putin, that's the way he likes to keep them, nervous, bordering on terror. And currently, the needle on the nervous meter is hitting the red line on the terror side.
And they have considerable capacity to exact revenge in different ways.
Not so long ago, there were reports about Ukrainian soldiers undergoing specialized training with the likes of the SAS-SBS units. This could be the first proof of that. And that sounds just like the kind of operation they would be involved in.
UA did a hit on Crimea and got away scot free
As has already been posted here, and I'd be inclined to agree with it. It was not Prigozhin who got cold feet, but one of his backers ( who if this is true still exists ) who pulled the plug on him. So back to plan "B", attack Shoigu and Gerasimov instead.
Without leaders. Kill the snake cut off the head, etc.
Who is that will step into the fold?
The top 3 were on the flight apparently.
Although i think this is highly unlikely but could Prigozhin have staged this as false flag himself…… he gets himself on the flight manifest (someone else taking his place), he’s has the plane rigged to go off; plane crashes and burnt remains of a man found with same build as him ……….might be a way for him to evade Putin etc, again I think this is unlikely and he’d be eventually found by someone at some point anyway.
It's very odd. A non paranoid Russian mobster.
There isn't a single U.S. soldier officially on the ground in Ukraine. Sending U.S. troops to Ukraine is opposed by pretty much every main political voice in the states. The whole thing a couple of years ago was to bring the boys back home, and that's what happened. Now, the script has been updated to not only don't send men, but don't send materials that the U.S. wasn't even using or was likely to use. Don't spend a fraction of the U.S. defence budget to knock out a major geopolitical rival. Madness. It has only to do with the idea of if Biden and the Democrats are for something, then it must be opposed, no matter how sensible.
I’m surprised it took that long for him to get clipped. If you’re going to come at Putin like he did you’d better kill him or you’re days are numbered. Did he think he was safe flying around Russia in his private jet?
I think that one of the reasons Prigozhin and his pals were in Africa was that things were not going well for them there in some places, and they were in danger of losing some of their " franchises", and being kicked out, and they were trying to remedy the situation.
I wouldn't be so quick to write off Wagner.....over the years, Prigozhin had built up a very loyal military network. Remember Wagnerites were treated way better than any conscripts or mobilized Russian soldiers. The regulars were paid, clothed, armed and most important, well led. And he protected them as much as he could, he brought in convicts to take the edge off Ukraine defenses, cannon fodder so to speak, but every convict killed, was a Wagnerite saved. Plus there was no love lost between the Wagnerites and the regular Russian army, who may now be tasked with eliminating the remaining Wagnerites. So they have nothing to lose, and if it goes down to the wire between the army and Wagner, who knows how that would turn out? The army showed no great enthusiasm for stopping Prigozhin on his way to Moscow. Definitely, if the welcome he got in Rostov was anything to go by, many would have supported him.
Norway already has much of its F-35 fleet up and running and its entire F-16 fleet of 72 aircraft decommissioned, so I'm guessing that if push came to shove, they should be able to provide more. Still, 12 aircraft is pretty much another squadron's worth of F-16s, so that's always good to see.
