This case had been absolutely harrowing for all involved.
Those poor babies and their families.
Words cannot describe the depths of cruelty at present here. My first child was born 6 weeks early. They are so delicate and helpless.
This vermin Lucy Letby deserves to rot
A trial lasting 11 months. week after week of evidence from forensic science experts, 7 years of evidence gathering by a team of detectives and trial preparation by prosecutors. The defendants team had all that time to build a case for their client. But you think that an appeal is likely based on a remark passed by a crime specialist brought on to Panorama to bring balance?
I didn't say an appeal was likely
I also believe she is guilty . However , I don't know she is guilty
I`d say multiple mental health issues have been or will be identified. The prosecution doesn`t want to go there and the defense couldn`t because she denies all responsibility. She`s as mad as a bucket of frogs.
I don't know about you, but I don't really need convincing that I am better than a nurse who murdered children.
If you need to be convinced that you are, thats a little worrying.
This... should have been physically removed to court....
female prisoners don’t take too kindly to baby killers
The law doesn't allow it
It's irrelevant stating that she should have been physically removed when it's not possible
One other harrowing fact from the trial was that she took home as souvenirs .. the handover sheets of the babies she killed...wtf ?
Basically murder souvenirs...
She obviously enjoyed and revelled in her own evil and depravity...
And this is something people need to grasp.... some people are just evil... there is no mental health angle...just pure evil, pure deep seeded badness... it exists...!
Some serial murderers have actually described that killing provided an outlet to deal with stress and anxiety. In some cases souvenirs provided a longer cooling off period between murders so they served a purpose.
Obviously this is no excuse these days as one gets drowned in mental health offers, but I’m saying that there are reasons why people kill apart from being simply “evil”.
Never getting out
This is absurd. Obviously people who haven't murdered newborn babies are better than those who have.
Whole life order. A judge with a pair....
Wouldn't have got that here.
Vile urchin will die in jail unless an appeal is successful.... 🙂
While that was always going to be her sentence, I feel that her drawing breath somewhere while those parents suffer forever with the memories of their helpless infants being tortured at Letby's hands, is irreconcilably wrong.
The lack of a death sentence for such exceptional things, is a matter of regret, I feel.
To me, the only appropriate solution would be for Letby to be hanged by her neck until dead.
It was no excuse any day....
The judges summing up was profound, accurate and comprehensive....
Unless it's self defense, it's evil...
Don't think it's on the statute here
Wholly deserved sentence. It was a disgrace that she was allowed to remain in her cell.
It's probably been mentioned already, there was a very similar case in the early 90's. Beverly Allitt "was given 13 life sentences in 1993 for murdering four children, attempting to murder another three, and causing grievous bodily harm with intent to a further six at Grantham and Kesteven hospital in Lincolnshire."
I think it was Venables committed other crimes and Thompson didn't.
That would be a great law to have over here.
Vile toerag deserves to die an old woman in prison.
Jesus. It just gets worse.
The parents of one of the set of twins had been through a few rounds of IVF. They say Letby new this.
It's not but a life sentence can mean a whole life sentence in Ireland, and if this case had happened here she'd be serving a whole life sentence.
She'll be at grave risk from some of the hard cases in HMWP who are mothers. Someone will hurt her.
Whole life sentence very appropriate here..
Exactly. When hospital management were looking at this case, what did they think more likely? An unlucky nurse getting bullied by the consultants or underperfomance - which would be a lot of what they'd be used to dealing with, or the infinitesimal chance that the quiet good nurse was actually a serial killer.
Hindsight being 20-20 they should have acted differently of course but this was clearly one of those things that happens so infrequently almost any other explanation is more likely right.
Disagree
They should have acted based on the stats and that's how it will be going forward
She’ll be well-protected
I don’t disagree here.
I have been asking: were the doctors reporting her to management for incompetence that could lead to harm, or did they report her as intentionally trying to harm? Because these are two very different scenarios. If the latter then the doctors should have been going to the police much much earlier.
Don't underestimate her power though. She had lots more people than hospital management fooled.
There needs to be strict procedures put in place now for instances like that.
It can't be down to the opinion of hospital management whether to investigate an incident or not
But didn’t the management investigate? They decided there was no real risk with her at the start.
Hopefully not too much.
Death is too good for her, and I never want anyone to be able to claim that she is a 'victim' ever again.
