This case had been absolutely harrowing for all involved.
Those poor babies and their families.
Words cannot describe the depths of cruelty at present here. My first child was born 6 weeks early. They are so delicate and helpless.
This vermin Lucy Letby deserves to rot
I didn't say an appeal was likely
I also believe she is guilty . However , I don't know she is guilty
A trial lasting 11 months. week after week of evidence from forensic science experts, 7 years of evidence gathering by a team of detectives and trial preparation by prosecutors. The defendants team had all that time to build a case for their client. But you think that an appeal is likely based on a remark passed by a crime specialist brought on to Panorama to bring balance?
You are assuming that she’d care
She should have no say in the matter
Correct
Mental health didn't come into play in the trial as she pleaded not guilty
It should be remembered that courts are human institutions, and certainly not infallible.
The concept of "British justice" is mythical.
Her defence team can't put that forward as a defence unless she is admitting the crime. However, her chosen defence path was that she didn't actually do it.
Why would she go though? She knows the outcome and doesn’t seem to have relished the trial. Makes sense to stay away
I’m quite sure if there was anything psychologically wrong with Ms Letby that her extensive defence team would have explored that avenue, and that it has been explored.
And if that exploration found that she was suffering a psychological illness that that would have been put forward as a defence in her favour.
Clearly, no mental health issues have been identified. It’s interesting that you disagree with this, though, having I assume no medical training and even if you had, you haven’t examined her.
She should have been dragged out of that cell today and into court to hear her sentence
An appeal would be interesting. Some of the circumstancial evidence seems dubious imo
From rte:
"During searches of her address, a number of closely written notes were discovered.
On one note she wrote "I don't deserve to live. I killed them on purpose because I'm not good enough to care for them", "I am a horrible evil person" and in capital letters "I am evil I did this".
Prosecutor Nick Johnson KC invited the jurors to read the note "literally" as a confession.
Her "voyeuristic tendencies" drove her to carry out numerous Facebook searches for parents of children she attacked, he said. "
The Note and the Facebook searches can be interpreted differently
A BBC expert who has worked with murderers said the note is merely evidence of someone distressed and not a confession
Burning in hell for eternity would be too good for that thing
Unless it's very recent, Robert Thompson has not re-offended, Venables was a different kettle of fish from day one.
Sure you could say that about every human who ever committed a depraved act......
Simple: what she did was utterly depraved and evil. Not much more to it, and I hope she never sees the light of day again
She pleaded not guilty
I don't think there was any mental health angle in the trial
I mean psychologically, because no mentally healthy person would do what she did.
What makes you think she’s “unwell”? Do you think that she hasn’t been examined medically?
But she hasn’t been found to be unwell, mentally or otherwise, in any way. If she were, her defence team would have persued that angle. I can’t understand why you’re trying to blame the UK press for her depiction as evil. Her actions are evil even today in not admitting her guilt and relieving the pain of the parents of the children she murdered.
If you don’t believe she’s guilty, that’s fine. Just simply explain why you don’t believe she’s guilty and we can debate it.
But so far you appear to be saying “yes, she’s guilty, no she’s not a bad person”. What’s that about?
And all this media circus does is lure people like you and me, and have us type a couple a paragraphs about one case or another.
Media lived off the moors murders for 50 years
Absolutely. The more victims, the more the media can milk the case, get more clicks, and the more people can devour it all and be horrified but also have that "glad my kids are safe" feeling. It's a ghoulish wing of the entertainment industry, Sky News and the like just love it.
Horrendous for the families of the victims of course, but that's always the way. Gotta feel sorry for Lucy's parents too. Seem like decent people who did their best and now their only child is one of the most notorious people in the country
Monsters and “born evil” so everyone can convince themselves that they are better
I think the most interesting thing to the masses, is the fact that, as it turns out, she is anything but ordinary.
Beverly ailitt was all over the news when she was convicted. Hasn't been spoken about in decades now.
i agree there is a ghoulish, morbid fascination with these cases. listening to the media it's like they are turning it into a twisted Olympic competition, counting the number of victims. it's as if they were almost hoping there were more. this crap sells and they know it.
it annoys people when you simply point out that she is an ordinary person, who did an extraordinary/terrible thing. that's not good enough for the baying mob. they need MONSTERS!
dozens more cases being investigated
I don't have any mental health training but I would guess that most people with personality disorders aren't awful.
Some though....... wicked
Exactly.
Beware of people who you suspect to have low self worth but tend to harbour grandiose thoughts, or even self deprecating attitudes. I had to deal with a client who was a classic case of the grandiose narcissist. He would talk a hundred miles an hour, made little sense, would contradict himself in one sentence; a piece of work I tell ya.
Everybody used to try avoid him like the plague but he was the art director for TV and films I was working on. Thankfully, he had a young assistant who was pretty good at reining him in, somewhat.
He once showed me a one page outline he had had written by a couple of writers to pitch to producers that was insanely banal but he thought was genius, like for everything he touched. But OTOH, he could be self deprecating in a manipulative way, to get what he wanted. People like that cause a lot of interpersonal problems in teams /crews. They also always tend to do illegal deeds, they have low/no morals, and try to justify their acts by what others did to them, etc…
The case here with Letby, there can be signs, and they shouldn’t be dismissed. In this case, it is pretty clear they were dismissed, because an authority (MD) had cause for concern, and was ignored. Awful, all around. Again, this is pure bureaucratic nonsense 101.
I never said that anything excused behaviour. I explicitly stated that people have choices even if they are inflicted by past trauma or personality disorders.
Yes there is a generic component, but for the most part scientists believe that environmental factors “unlock” the potential.
Not every person with these disorders is awful by default. You just don’t tend to hear about the ones who live normal/ semi-normal lives.
Psychopathy, sociopathy, narcissism I guess. Personality disorders - not the same as mental illness, and not always the result of trauma. Some people are just innately awful.
People want to understand why it happened. Why she did it.
So much pain and suffering caused by her actions.
She has to be deeply disturbed. Maybe killed animal/insects etc when she was younger. But no one in her life suspected her of anything bad. Suspicion of her initially came about through coincidence. It wasn't because she was a nasty person. When police went digging, they found lots more evidence.
