What if Tesco hadn't bought Quinnsworth?

So this year marks 25 years since Tesco agreed to purchase Quinnsworth and enter the Irish market. Over the following four years the Quinnsworth and Crazy Prices stores gradually transitioned into Tesco ones, and in 2001 Quinnsworth was history. But what if Tesco hadn't purchased them? Would we still have Quinnsworth/Crazy Prices today? Or would another company have taken over?

There's a supermarket chain in Canada called Loblaw's which was owned by the same company as Quinnsworth until the latter was sold in 1997. It has a similar logo to the old Quinnsworth stores, uses an identical logo to Quinnsworth's Premium Choice under the name President's Choice (only difference is the name), and has its own Yellow Pack-style scheme called No Name.

Actually more the supplier. Tesco's defense would be that they assumed the supplier had gotten permission from the staff.

I don't know why everybody gets so upset about the Tesco clubcard discounts yet seem to have no problem with Dunnes Stores who make you overpay for loads of stuff but will give you some of your money back if you come in and overpay in the future. Well, that's if you can find your voucher, or if you even spent enough to get one in the first place. (You probably did though, with Dunnes' prices...)

Because Tesco are pretty much price gouging and people have every right to be pissed off with them, I'm surprised more people are not annoyed.

Your comparing apples with oranges now. Dunnes are more expensive than Aldi or lidl but still a good bit cheaper than the extortionate price Tesco have for non clubcard holders.

I'm not defending Tesco, just saying that Dunnes have always been more expensive, so they don't offer great value. I doubt if I ever spent €50 in Dunnes since they started the €10 off voucher, so I would be paying the higher prices with no benefits.

I think Tesco used to be better value than Dunnes in general until this latest campaign, but now they have improved discounts if you have the clubcard, but they've increased the prices significantly if you don't have one or if you forgot it, so obviously that's not great.

I realise that Tesco wants people's data but since most people hand over their data to Instagram, Facebook, etc. every day, signing up for a clubcard wouldn't a big thing. For people who it is a big thing, it's usually a huge thing, and they will have to suffer the higher prices. It mightn't be right but it's the modern world.

Anyway, my original point wasn't pro-Tesco, it was anti-Dunnes or maybe people's view of them.

Not in my experience. Some of the prices in my local Tesco are eye-watering and that was the case before the current "clubcard price" nonsense started.
