Yes that's one part of the story alright. The other part being ignored here is that the Gards actually allowed themselves get involved in an entirely civil matter at the behest of BoI. While at the same time pleading that they don't have the manpower to walk the beat in Temple Bar, for example.
How do you know the gardai acted at the behest of BOI?
Any reports I have read say the were acting on the back of numerous calls from the public.
It wasn't a civil matter. From what I heard people started getting robbed when leaving the ATM's etc as people knew they had 1k with them.
If the Gardai didn't show up Im sure you would have complained that they didn't protect the people from the thugs that wanted to rob them

I don't know why people keep mentioning people on the dole doing this. 1. How do u know they're on the dole and 2. The dole doesn't go into a bank account it has to be collected in person. Boards really needs to set up a separate forum just for people to vent on "dole bludgers" it's getting boring.
They were stopping people using ATMs, that's a huge civil rights issue gards landed themselves in.
Not meaning to drag this off topic, but you are technically incorrect on that second point. It is an option to have your dole put directly into a bank account at the post office. Also, I recall a friend who used to have their dole automatically paid into their bank account and only had to present themselves at the office maybe once a month or something. This was a while back, pre-covid.
I was on the dole briefly a few months ago and was never given that option. Cash was handed over. U can lodge that cash into a bank account if u want at the post office. My point was a lot of comments here are assuming it automatically goes into ur account which is not true. U get cash it's up to u whether to walk out the door or lodge it but the cash is in ur hand. Anyway my relevant point was not everyone fleecing those machines were on the dole.

So the people that took €1,000 that didn't belong to them, were subsequently robbed of that €1,000!! Bizarre. Some would say karma.
Had to laugh at someone from Social Justice Ireland saying how terrible it is for people that had only a few bob in their account and then thought it would be all grand to draw out money that wasn't theirs.

If you want to see one of the most incompetent politicians in the Dail look up his performance asking questions to the RTE board in the recent Media Committee hearings. Woefully ill prepared, useless orator, and a waste of a seat on the committee. This clown didn't give him great advice going into that session. Classic SF, all bluster, no action.

Today I got a call from a person who I had made a transaction to. (Four figure sum) they were more than irate and accusing me of trying to con them.
I eventually got off the phone with them and checked my banking. The transaction had disappeared from my in progress section and was not in the completed section on my 365.
BOI started telling me my closing balance of last night and that it all added up the sum never went through and I wasn’t out of pocket. Until I explained with screen shots the time of the transaction then they started putting me on hold here there and everywhere. Eventually the line went dead and I rang back into the system, press 6 etc. next thing it says the Vodafone customer you are calling can’t take the call!!!
then my phone rings back some 087 number telling me I rang him??? Mad stuff.
eventually back onto BOI and started again explaining told best thing would be to take out cash and pay the man!! Just in case it never went through. The payment said success in my screen shot.
this evening got a call to say payment was found and would transfer at 12:00 midnight tonight which it did. but in the mean time to appease the irate customer I had to give him cash to hold over night to reassure him it was a genuine mistake. now I have to drive an hour in the morning to collect that.
thanks BOI at the very least free banking charges should be on the cards. But I’ll be out of there next week.
