Dunnes and Tesco (clubcard price) are €21.50 for 70cl, which is €0.75 above MUP (i.e. not bad). With MUP you will also struggle to get a much better price than that on any Lidl/Aldi own brand offerings of the same strength. Even if you got a bottle there bang on MUP, you're still gambling on how you'll find it for a very marginal saving, so were I in your position I'd shelve that plan until such a time as the price differential increases.
Good point. Smirnoff from Tescos's it is so.
Centra (until August 30th)
Arresti Estate (Chile) Sauvingnon Blanc/Cabernet Sauvingnon 75cl
€ 7
Aldi obviously
What's it like I wonder?🤔
It's a light red wine, only 11.5% alcohol, that's why it can be priced at €7 with MUP.
So more of a lunch wine, or one to chill slightly at a BBQ perhaps. Not a warming red for an autumn night.
Quite nice given the lower strength, didn't seem 'thin' to me.
It’s a sad state of affairs when this constitutes a good deal today. Not so long ago we were getting slabs for this price. 😞
8 500ml cans is just over the volume of 12 330ml bottles. Usually, there are deals on cans that are better than the bottles
eg 8 cans of Rockshore or Carlsberg can come in 12.62 - 13.50 whereas any of the bottle deals rarely go below €15
but you're right, a deal now is a decrease of about 10%.
got a bottle of this, really cant complain but not to my liking, a bit harsh for a 40 proof
My post had 15 bottles-a euro a bottle,not too bad(these days)? good luck 👍
Was it 40% or 46%? I thought it should be 46%, some people like the extra kick but maybe not to everyone's liking.
Those are only 300ml though.
Still more than 8x 500ml cans though?
10 cans of 440ml madri in tesco 17quid.
Its piss water though.
If anyone enjoys Belgian beer, Lidl seem to always have the box of 6 for 15 euro. Some value, it's 4-4.50 for each bottle individually in the off licence. Has a bornem double and tripel, two gulden draak quadruples and two piraat beers, a tripel and a strong blonde. Must be very close to the MUP for top quality beers.
Hard to beat a good strong blonde???
The only "deal" we get nowadays is to get your preferred beer at minimum price.
So for the deal posted by John Arse above - 15x300ml 4.3% - the minimum legal price is €15.27. They have priced it at the minimum. Can't go any cheaper. Whether it's bottles or cans is irrelevant.
That calculator wrongly uses 0.79 in its calculation, a few others do too, the value in law is 0.789. It is only out by a tiny amount but bugs me and can cause confusion, people thinking shops are selling a few cent below MUP.
I multiply the figures and drop the decimals and zeros. So a bottle of smirnoff (37.5% 700ml) is 375x7x789=2,071,125 -should be obvious where the decimal goes.
I stil find it really odd that supermarkets are not explicitly stating when they are selling at MUP, a non round number is a usual sign of it but not always.
I noticed that. I made a new one (the previous one was not mine). Let me know if the figures are correct.
What I really can't understand is that before MUP came in supermarkets would run the sale of slabs etc as a loss. Now they will barely go to the MUP. Why is this? Surely if someone gave a guarantee of legally the lowest prices people would just shop there.
Agreed. I was thinking just this the other day.
Lidl and Aldi in particular are way over MUP on their individual cans/bottles and somewhat over on most of their multi packs.
You would think it would make sense for them to at least keep their own brand products at the minimum.
Aldi have some nice beers priced always at MUP :
*These two are not quite MUP, they're a little (8c) over.
If i'm missing any let me know. Point is, you don't have to wait around for bank-holiday discounts, and you also don't have to buy large boxes to get MUP.
I do buy the DIPA fairly regularly.
They've stopped doing the Brown Bear IPA in my local ages ago for some reason.
I'm not a fan of of the Hazy or the Free Sound unfortunately.
I don't buy 330ml bottles because I quaff then too fast.
I don't like the taste of Strana at all.
IIRC the Roadworks is over MUP.
They also have Tyske at MUP but I don't like it since it started being brewed in Holland.
Their Stella rip-off is MUP for the 4 pack but it's rotten.
The rest are overpriced. The Karskorone stuff is drinkable but I wouldn't give them the satisfaction of buying it at the price they charge.
SuperValu used to do a very nice Journeyman DIPA for €3 but that's now increased by 10%.
Yeah, I know I'm awkward 🤣 but there's no point in buying stuff I don't like his for the sake of it.
IIRC the Roadworks is over MUP
They have several variety of Roadworks but the IPA (orange label) is 6.3%, 500ml, 2.49. That's MUP
Well the original comment was they had nothing at MUP. So it's more that they have lots but you don't like it. Which is fine... but a different story
The point I was/am trying to make is that all of their entry price beers/lagers which were always much cheaper than non discounted branded products pre MUP are now priced well above it.
If they could sell them cheaper then, it's surprising that they don't keep them at the minimum allowed now and keep some of the own brand market share.
Why would they bother though, they have people by the nuts if you want a mainstream beer/lager/cider. Laughing all the way to the bank at our expense. Thanks Gov.ie
True, but they probably would have a better margin on own brand even selling it at minimum.
Dunnes:
Carlsberg 8x500ml €13.57
priced exactly at MUP. valid from 18/08/2023 until 22/08/2023
I remember about 5 years ago heading on hols to galway and these were reduced to 89cent a can! Whilst it was an acquired taste, still way better than usual range of plain horsep*ss in bars!
Best holiday I can't emember! 😆 f**k MUP!
Not my pics above.
Right yeah my point was about slabs and stuff. Not an acquired taste like craft stuff. Bud, Heineken, Coors your average run of the mill mainstream stuff. I just don't get how they went from underprice it all to overprice it all. I mean they were prepared to make a loss and now even at MUP they are making a collosal profit and still overcharge it at the best of times.
