Large queues at Bank of Ireland ATMs this evening.

Agreed - i misunderstood - I thought you were talking about the DSFA stopping payment at source and repaying BOI out of money recouped - incorrect assumption made by me
There’s 2 different sets of people who withdrew money they shouldn’t have last night -
1) idiots - they use their bank of Ireland account for all their income and won’t have anymore funds available to them until what they took is paid back. I hope they didn’t spend it all at once.
2) lucky chancers - they may have an active bank account but don’t use it. They grabbed the opportunity last night to either withdraw from an atm or transfer into their revolut/PayPal/etc. They’re never paying that money back. There’s probably loads that don’t even live at the address assigned to the account
You would want to be a bigger idiot not to pay it back
You will lose your credit rating and good luck to you in the future without that
They shouldn’t, but I think they will, because they’ll have people complaining that they have no money for anything.
Will depend on the fallout but it wouldn’t surprise me to see there being a compromise that allows people to access funds while the back gets the money back.
Dumb asses, joke's on them in their next bank statement! Free money indeed.
The "lucky chancers" are arguably even more stupid if they think they'll avoid consequences.
But they already have the money they just withdrew it in advance, that's not a department or government problem.
My issue is people all over the country were queuing but someone takes it on themselves to mention one specific place - Tallaght. Got a text from my brother in Greystones last night that there were queues at every ATM there but as usual someone on Boards decides to mention Tallaght specifically like it's the only place it's happening. It's always easier to punch down I guess.
Did they make you pay back money you borrowed off them?
Terrible thing to be doing.
I’d say a majority of those who took money wouldn’t be concerned with their credit rating to start with.
How anyone actually thought this was “free” money is truly beyond me.
How thick do you have to be to believe that.
Can’t wait for the faux outrage to follow all of this when people’s standing orders and direct payments fail when their accounts are overdrawn.
The balances are accurate at weekends now
Back in the day they used to jump around
They’d have to be found first.
Bank of Irelands balance sheet will make interesting reading at the end of their financial year
They won't care in the slightest about complaints like that, it's a bank at the end of the day not a charity. If I went over my agreed overdraft I'd get threatening letters about it and if it continues the OD would be pulled. Do you think they'd care in the slightest about what money I have to live off in that case? Nope all they see is your account in negative and it's tough **** for you.
The Streets foresaw all this years ago.
Why do people keep talking about social welfare payments being paid directly into bank accounts? I thought that only happened during covid and the majority of social welfare payments were mainly paid over the counter at post offices now?
Tbf they were using their own accounts to do it.
So naturally they assumed the bank wouldn't be able to follow who took the money from their own account.
I don't think we are dealing with scientists here.
It's funnier to say Tallaght.
Is it only jobseekers that cannot be paid into a bank now?
Lone parents, carers, disability all through bank (or post office if you requested it)
It was a joke
Hilarious.
But the thing is, they DO have money- they have whatever unauthorised amount they took from the ATM machine. So to say they have no money is completely inaccurate - now if these gombeens decide to spend that money now, then yes, they will have nothing for the next number of weeks assuming there’s no change to their payment of dole or benefits money
That was such a beaut album.
Edit: Fuuùck its 19 years old. That cant be right.
"It Was Supposed to Be So Easy"
It’s like getting paid 2 weeks of money over the Christmas period because dept of social welfare will be closed. They’d have to make the money stretch until the New Year.
It’s amazing how the lazy dolers and layabouts can manage to rouse themselves to get to an ATM a when they think there is free money available.
Good morning to all the poor wretches who went out last night and spent like it was 2005 all over again.
Welcome to the wonderful world of unauthorised overdrafts. Your bank WILL be in touch to tell you how much you owe them and how much the juice is (hint, its painful). They won't break your legs if you can't pay it all back immediately, but they will keep adding to it with fees and charges and more juice.
For the bank, there will be PR to be released. Contrite apologies, carefully concocted by spin doctors will be forthcoming. There will be an internal investigation announced. to get to the bottom of things. There may even be an investigation by the Central Bank, the golfing will be legendary. The DPC, not wanting to be left out of things, will pick up a chicken roll from below their office and ask questions about data and privacy.
The politicians will take this opportunity to puff their chests and bluster about the unfairness of it all, even though they are actively encouraging BOI to cut costs to fund more dividends to their shareholders and helping them to make massive profits off mortgages. They will call the bankers to the PAC, the bankers will tell them to mind their own business and they will go "Grand so".
The bank will say everything that can be done has been done. lessons were learned, new systems were put in place, but will it happen again? We can't say.
Bonuses all round!
There wasn't a pre-login message on the app. The only message I observed was that there was no mobile or Wi-Fi connectivity.
That’s what I was getting as well.
Don’t get me wrong, I agree with all of that.
But being realistic, people queueing at ATMs for thousands yesterday won’t be making sure they keep some of it to get by over the next few weeks.
And because of the amount of people who have done it looks to be sizeable enough I think there’s a chance the government don’t want the headache of queues at dole offices when people complain that they can’t get the money they need.
The debt certainly won’t be forgiven, they will have to pay it back, but I think there’s a chance the government asks BOI to allow withdrawals while they try to sort out what happened.
