Large queues at Bank of Ireland ATMs this evening.

How is it the banks error if you queued up at an ATM and withdrew money you didn't have?
Social welfare folks got their money, just all of September's at once.
So, BOI will just recall the money from the new account. Do you honestly think Revolut or whoever are going to dig their heels in and say no we’re not transferring that money back? Not a hope.
Send in the Russian Maria debt collectors to put some manners on them.
International embarrassment for Ireland.
They will keep getting their payments from the welfare.
They just wont be able to withdraw it until the money stolen has been made up.
Dole is collected from the post office now
so they won’t be getting that back in a hurry
The BBC carrying the story now.
If payments keep going into your account eh yes they can keep that money if you’ve take. 1000 euro you don’t have- it’s their money that you owe them
If only there was an alternative to banks, some kind of decentralised currency that was easy to use, with free/cheap and instantaneous transactions that used some form of bullet-proof blockchain technology.
Maybe someday someone will think of it.
BOI will just reverse the bank transfer or cancel it if it hasn't processed.
Exactly. And given its the banks error, they wont withold the money and will either pay out the welfare or arrange for it to be paid outside of the account.
Can you imagine the uproar if social welfare folks didnt get any money for 4 weeks?
It just wont happen.
Very easy for them to look at your history. “Ye I know I never withdrew more than €20 from an ATM in my life and never had more than €150 before this night but it’s just a coincidence that I withdrew €2000 yer honour, I was sure it was in me account”
There absolutely is, because you made an unauthorized overdraft and put yourself in the hole.
It'd actually be 5 weeks after the overdraft fee and interest are applied.
Why not? Taken out at source from social welfare.
All d'jaysusing bankers fault, of course.
So if an ATM held 100k, you only need 100 of these idiots to empty it and much less if they’re making multiple attempts
It's not "an extra grand"
If your account is overdrawn, you can't withdraw money. Simple as that. You'll be hearing some sob stories in the coming days I think.
They really wont.
The bank authorised the transaction. There is no way the banks wont pay out welfare for a calendar month.
They might pay a fiver a week back or something. Either way it's a win.
There is no way they wont be able to withdraw the money. They will just collect over the counter or seitch the method of payment.
I take the grand. i spend it. I now have no money. bank cant withold my cash for 4 weeks judt because they f**ked up and let me take out an extra grand.
But if they already have their welfare set up to go into the account then it’s probably too late to change it, certainly for this week’s payment, it will transfer automatically.
If they collect from the post office then yeah, can’t see them using that account again.
Don’t need a payment plan- just deposit that 1000 that doesn’t belong to you back into your account tomorrow 😀
Unless you have an agreed overdraft of 1000, you won't be able to withdraw again until your account is in the positive.
They can't just take out the weekly money and reset the debt.
I think the IT controls went so very badly wrong that a “per machine per transaction” limit ended up being in operation. The morning will tell a lot of exactly how much money some people were able to withdraw. Seems to be a massive, massive issue.
Videos and pictures still coming in of queues on O'Connell Street, Sutton Cross and Blackpool in Cork.
Most of the people in the queues are wearing track suits.
Yes, but that won't stop them opening an account with a positive balance.
Which wont happen for the unemployed.
They don’t need to be about to emigrate they could be away for years with an account still open same for all the Eastern European’s and whoever else opened an account years ago here and went home
Would they not just take the cash out which leaves the account at -1000.
But they dont need to pay it back because they have no income.
