If they opt to take the lump sum they will only receive about half the money and then they'll lose 37% of that balance right off the top in Federal taxes plus more in State taxes potentially.

Some College in Cleveland defeated the issue by 98% apparently. Which explains why Republicans are doing things like trying to make it harder to vote for college students.
One of the people aiming to be Republican nominee for 2024 Vikram Ramaswamy, recently said people under 22 should have to pass a civics test before being able to vote. In Indiana, Republicans are being challenged in court for trying to remove college ID's as being valid forms of ID for elections. (Something that Conservatives in the UK did recently as well).
