Irish hoteliers and others are back blaming the bad weather for their fall in custom, and not their own prices or charges.
What are your own experiences of excessive prices being charged in Ireland relative to the rest of the EU?
It is a pity Ireland doesn't have more options in this space. I would love the France camps but the drive is too much hassle with young kids
The hotels in Dublin are seriously price gouging for those concerts
😂
No need to throw toys out of pram.
I don't dislike Europe. I am going to it next year as I said. But once you take a proper comparison of similar hotels then the price "gulf" is not as big as people make out.
You have provided nothing to say I am wrong and now gone to childish personal comments.
Not enough Irish people do that though. A lot of us, me included just accept sub standard service and produce and pay up. We could learn a thing from our American friends on that. A lot of the places in tourist spots just throw up pure shite knowing they don't need the return business. Shop St in Galway is an excellent example of this. Treat customers like absolute crap because they know there are people waiting outside the door to take their place.
This is why I think Airbnb is fantastic, and why I suspect the government is not motivated about cracking down on short lets. Without them, hotel rooms would cost even more due to demand and there would be a huge decrease in tourists/domestic short breaks. I recently looked into hotel rooms for Coldplay, 1k for a room in Jury’s Christchurch, which is hardly salubrious.
A comparison that was false.
Your attempts to discredit the hotels in Europe is brexiteer-like. . . . A dislike of them because they are in Europe. Totally absurd and you're inadvertently backing up the rip off culture in Ireland without intending to do so with your absurd form of argument.
Oh love the Canaries, when less kids we used to do the New Years Day flight at 8 which was all families. Mighty crack :-)
The biggest con-job going is the gourmet burger. Everywhere is charging e15 or higher for a burger.
They cant all be gourmet. I had the burger at Lyrath estate, Kilkenny.. 5 star hotel... its was a rubber puck.
I complained, and there was a massive argument. I stood my ground and told them I was not paying for it.
Don't be knocking the chipper. It's part of the Irish tourist experience.
I gave you a comparison that all.
Im sorry to tell you but a lot of them are. Just look at tripadvisor and it's eye opening how many are.
Now not all of them of course but you need to compare good with good
Absolutely. In general for decent quality you will pay the money. Hwoever I think 2500 for all inclusive in a nice hotel is good value.
It's when it comes to dining out and restaurants for example you will see the savings. We were in Canaries recently and it might be a bad example considering the tax status of the Island but 7 of us were eating out in the nicest of places with wines / beers for 130 quid. And that was steaks etc. There were 4 of us (2 adults 2 kids) and all in with flights an accommodation we spents approx 4.5k for ten nights. Split the accommodation and not once did we use the cooker.
People slag me about the Canaries citing the lack of culture and that crap. But if it's culture I wanted I wouldn't leave Ireland. It's an escape and a chance to dine out as much as we want. We don't really dine out in Ireland. Maybe twice a year or so.
It's the only comparison I have to what we got in France. But in France we had guaranteed weather and weren't fleeced by every restaurant and shop in the vicinity.
I'm sorry to tell you this. . . the hotels in Europe are not sh*tholes.
Well I just went on the website of that hotel to book for a week in late October. They define an adult as over twelve years of age, interestingly.
For THREE people for a week the price is €1014 without breakfast.
Sorry that was a little tongue in cheek :-)
If you book a good hotel in Spain/Portugal they are not a huge difference. People compare to some sh*thole in Spain that if you went to in Ireland they would walk out the door and not stay a night. Not a fair comparison.
Like I stayed in some sh*t holes in my youth because it was cheap and I was just looking to go on the beer but when you are chasing out bugs with a can of deodorant on fire you know its a kip
Same week, same number of people. Galway 1300 for Maldron Hotel Galway.
I rant about "hotels profiteering for a concert. . . . "
Ah so it's okay to profiteer. Thanks for that.
You're living in cloudcuckooland - Painting continental Europe as cheap but a complete dump with good weather relative to "slightly more" expensive Ireland which is quality personified. Go on ya spoofer.
Yeah. Believe me a villa in Portugal or the Canaries isn't anything like renting a house for a week in Ireland. You use it as a base to sleep, swim and have drinks by the pool. We wouldn't "self cater" as in cook at for example. I can see why you think I am contradicting myself though.
So only the rich should expect to get breaks away in a foreign country? Air travel is much cheaper now and that's the reason behind that. Value for money in Ireland is hard to come by when it comes to hospitality. I'm sure it does exist but those spots are few and far between.Look I'm probably doing people a disservice who enjoy holidaying in Ireland. That's their thing and who am I to criticise that.
However it can't be denied that Ireland and the hospitality sector is absolutely creaming it at times. Mental prices when looking at some of the hotels for a weekend in October. Tullamore is near on 500 quid for two nights in a modest enough hotel.
I'm sticking with the title of the thread here by the way. Or course I could always throw a tent up somewhere and have a great time. Or stay 20km away from the place.
€59 per person per night. . . . Best of luck getting that in Ireland.
Centerparcs is massively overpriced in Ireland and based on UK prices. It has a niche market and really the only supplier in Ireland for that marketplace. It's massively over priced for what it is but more a representation of UK than Ireland
A Villa in Spain or Portugal is a million miles away from renting out a holiday home in Doolin
You posted: Because people want an escape from the mundane routine of everyday life. They want to go out and about and enjoy meals or drinks or hospitality. They want 7 days of release. Nothing wrong with that. Self catering and renting a house out doesn't give you that.
Now you are telling me to book a Villa? :-)
The Misses wants something all inclusive which the price above doesn't include
I couldn't tell you the prices for that unfortunately, we did it as a couple.
If you want, I can give you a breakdown of a family break(2+3) to a eurocamp park in the south of France as that is something we did recently. Between flights and accommodation for a week it worked out at about half the price of centreparcs in Ireland. And that is not factoring in the cost of food, drink, shopping etc which of course was much much cheaper in France.
You posted about a night in Germany for 90, I pointed out you can get the same here in Ireland. So you rant about hotels profiteering for a concert and has nothing to do with the discussion at all. Yes that is changing the goal posts.
As I said above, plenty of people in Ireland will expect a 4 star to be a 4 star. Go to Spain/Portugal and a 4 star would struggle to get 1-2 in Ireland. That's before we start discussing the wages etc.
I flew to plenty of countries, all over the World actually as well. I know the issues Ireland has but I also know the benefits it has. People complain about prices while demanding higher wages in Ireland. They don't seem to be able to link the two of them
That's your experience.
Would you consider a Villa? Usually work out cheaper than a hotel or apartment too. Private pool etc.
Let me know if you want some contact details.
The relentless increase in the value of the swiss franc since 2007 has contributed to Switzerland being an expensive destination. €1 = CHF 1.66 in 2007. Now €1 = CHF 0.96.
and is it day or night when you get the taxi there?
You don't like staycations. That good for you.
Plenty of people do.
Not sure why people need to spend so much time telling everyone how terrible it is in Ireland. I have done enough trips aboard and to be honest a lot of the hotels in Spain/Portugal etc would be shut down in a week if it was in Ireland. People just ignore how much of a sh*thole it is because they are on a holiday.
Yes they have some lovely hotel, but then those lovely hotels are in the same price range as Ireland. So people go for the cheap hotel and then just ignore the issues.
I am actually looking for a holiday next year abroad, mostly because of the sh*t weather here and we haven't gone in years. Searched all the Budget/Tui/Cassidy hotels. F**k me but a lot of them are terrible. The nice places, well yes the prices of them are getting close to prices in ireland.
So this hotel we are looking at, came recommended: NAU Salgasdos Dunas Suites. For 7 days its 2500 for 6 of us.
I'd say it's about 7-8 miles
