Why does the rest of the country dislike Dublin so much?

Its a broad statement yes and of course not all culchies feel this way but yesterday I had a strange experience.

I was in butlers on grafton street ordering a coffee when some random drunken Kerry man turned to me and said;

“flat white? you f**king dubs have serious notions.”

I really don’t get it.

Significant amount of Dubliners do not leave the city except for trips abroad. They are totally ignorant of what the rest of Ireland is like.

I have to say I feel Dublin has gone downhill in recent years. Especially in terms of safety. Some nice parts for sure but honestly several parts are a real hole. Apart from the cost of living I genuinely wouldn't have a desire to live there. I do think some Dubs think everyone is jealous of them and want to be like them which I honestly don't think is true.

Where you meeting them in London cause that's obviously not going to be a representative sample. Not every hates Dublin either, but lots of people from the North of England would have pretty negative feelings about London, and in particular the "London-centric" nature of UK governance. They'd have a stronger point than those who complain about Dublin-centric governance in Ireland to be honest.

Every city/town has issues, we are all Irish and should be helping one another tackle these problems not stigmatising somebody off the bat on the basis of where they are from.

But you've dozens and dozens of posts on boards.ie with these tall stories or negative experiences of Dublin, you jump on every single thread about the capital do denounce the capital, slag it off, slag off Dubliners, tell us how stupid they are etc... I think county pride plays a part. An American can move to New York and become a New Yorker, an English man can move to London and become a Londoner. But I know guys in Dublin 40 years and if you introduce them to someone they will tell them where they are really from before telling them their name. No one want to become a Dub.

Our county pride is as strong as it is because of the GAA.

Add to that weak local government which means any bit of investment is reliant on approval / funding from central government... which get communicated as Dublin government.

Exactly. Divide and Conquer. I love Gaelic games but the GAA as an institution is an intrinsic state sanctioned tool in order to keep the masses on a tiny island psychologically divided. I come from an area of Galway where even the loudest fools from each village, literally across the road/river/ditch from each other are at each others throats over club hurling.

Yeah generally they do, but that's on a total macro level. This is Ireland where you have a basically tiny population, at a micro level, at each others throats over divisions that were literally planted by foreign influence in order to assert control whether it be counties or parishes. That is no good for a land that is literally a small island with a fairly small population, well, it's good for some, those at the top. That's why it was designed, fiercely implemented and non stop showcased. This very thread is an example of it.

In fairness , you can’t blame them when you look at the prices of accommodation here ….and you ain’t guaranteed good weather…paying top dollar for food and drinks…. Questionable or non existent public transport so you end up driving everywhere… look at Kilkenny, just had a look for later this month and not including a bank holiday or anything special going on like GAA, or concerts…

you as a Dubliner or wherever, you’d need your head read. I’m looking at hotels, the same dates, South of France, a few euros cheaper….Kilkenny or Côte D’Azur pretty much similar money….know where I’d be off to. 30° please, sand, sea, marvellous scenery, top cuisine, nightlife, public transport, great day trips and culture a plenty. Two of those rates for Kilkenny even have no breakfast included ffs.
