I had written this in another thread but deleted it. There are hardliner greens at the fringes of the party who are very anti-roads so it probably suits Ryan to never shout about approving road projects. And it suits FF and FG that he's the one "not allowing projects to go ahead" compared with their own "gettin the road done!". It suits everybody. Surprise: Politics is sickening!
I don’t think he was present at the N5 opening or the N22 opening.
The N22 opening in particular saw the town square host a music festival last weekend; would never have happened without the bypass. The N22 also will do absolute wonders for Cork-Kerry bus times. So roads are for more than evil motorists destroying the planet with their cars
Blinded by his own narrow mindedness.
I don't think he likes anything motorised that competes with trains from what I can see and that includes buses. There's definitely narrow-mindedness the opposite way too, where a lot of politicians can't see past cars. But we're in dangerous territory here really so I'll say no more.
A plague on all their houses!
I will take your cue and also refrain from further comment.
This road will be on the lips of many a Mayo person after their long trip home from Dublin this Sunday evening. Hopefully it’s one of the last such trips on this stretch of track.
Roscommon County Council issued the tender documents to the three pre-qualified candidates on 22 July 2022. The tender return date was originally scheduled for 22 December, however, at the request of tenderers this has been extended to 24 March 2023. One tender was received by the closing date. The tender assessment report was submitted to TII on 31 May recommending the award of the contract to the sole tenderer. The updated Business Case was submitted to TII on 7 June. Department of Transport is preparing a Memo to Cabinet seeking approval to award this contract.
Should be publicly awarded very shortly.
Jeez, I hope that sole tenderer doesn't go bust before this gets done ! 😀
That is no a good sign for the Civils industry that only one tender came back
TII want to move onto NEC contracts to address that and are doing so with the M28 project which is to go to tender in Q3.
What are NEC contracts?
Just a different set of contracts, from the UK.
Looks like the contract won't be awarded until September. Too late to take advantage of the summer for earthworks, unfortunately.
^^ What summer you're referring to? Seeing what the current weather is, I'm struggling to see any advantage, to be honest. ;-)
I know you're kind of joking, but the ground is still a lot dryer in the summer even with the rain, because of the higher ground temperatures than in wintertime.
Wouldn't be able to do any felling of trees or ditch clearance till winter anyway. Even if signed today, unlikely any proper groundworks would be starting till next spring anyway.
Major roadworks can get an exemption from the hedge cutting rules.
I understand that with current junctions to improve sightlines etc, didn't realise it applied to new projects too. Would they still need to do an environmental survey to see if there are any nests before felling takes place.
I think all construction work is exempt from it.
Costs increase by 60 million since the first tender. No surprise but hopefully the government won't get cold feet.
Contract lto was 134.6m. So in and around €194m this time around if that's the case
€5m/km for completely offline Type 1 single in the current environment isn't the worst imo.
any word on a start date ?
Especially considering it's fairly well future proofed in terms of future widening to T2DC.
SpongeBob posted over on Sabre and suggested a start of Spring 2024. He was uncannily accurate in a number of his predictions when he was on Boards - to the point people suspected he knew someone on the inside.
No muck shifting starts in the winter.
The winter will hardly be any wetter than the summer just gone. At least in winter, the ground can be more solid due to frost. These projects scan multiple winters regardless of when they start, they really doesn't influence things.
Since when????
What is Sabre?

There's a press release out today saying this has been approved -- from €200m to now costing €450m: https://www.gov.ie/en/press-release/803f1-minister-ryan-announces-n5-ballaghaderreen-to-scramoge-road-project/#:~:text=Following%20today's%20cabinet%20approval%20Minister,to%20the%20west%20and%20northwest.
This gave me a good laugh that you think Ryan is against buses given the huge investment in new bus routes, new electric buses, BusConnects etc.
He's very focused on electric cars too: https://x.com/EamonRyan/status/1706336338763518400?s=20
Christ.
€450m is mental for a project like this, it doesn’t sound right especially given the €194m reported in local media last month.
You might be right about all of the above when considering/referencing the Dublin area, but not so much in Cork. Bus Connects Cork is being watered down to absolutely nothing on the majority of corridors to the point where it seems unlikely anything at all will happen, there are no electric buses that I know of and we had some "trains are the only answer" antics on N28 and N25 corridors (where buses are the only realistic options due to geography and population dispersion). To be fair though that was from the Green party in general rather than just Ryan, so I'm being unfair in singling him out.
And also to be fair, the frequency and rolling stock on some existing bus routes seems to have been radically improved.
