Very good idea, just a bit boring. But really nice to drive.
How are they in term of mpg? I do have a heavy foot so I would be a little worried.
Would 3000€ Prius be good idea?
I wrote out a long post and the page refreshed argh.
Owned every Saab combination over the past 10 years.
Original Aeros are hard to get, rare as Hens teeth so aim for a 1.8t
€300 for a map, and bigger turbo and you will go from 150hp to 260hp 370nm.
Pick up the Aero trim and bits then as you go along. Great community for finding parts and a great quirky car to work on
I'm torn between throwing it off the cliff or fixing it and keeping it forever. It meant to be my project car as I got it quite cheap, high mileage 500k, plus few things which still need fixing, needs turbo, few new sensors, timing chain. I'm gonna be off the job market for atleast one year, so now not the greatest time to play with fixeruper. Maybe if it was 535d or petrol. Now I'm in "grandpa" mode. Just want something comfy, auto and not to expensive to fix.
I asked this question years ago and the go to answer seemed to be a petrol turbo saab. But what car would you recommend as a saloon petrol for a bit of weekend driving or a car as a bit of a project. I will still have my daily diesel.. Its an idea I get now and again - want to try something different from a 2 door hatch or coupe that a regularly buy over the years. Bangernomics ideas would be great.
Any comments from people who currently own or owned the suggestions would be good
If it was running sound beforehand I'd be inclined to fix it considering the price of everything at the moment.
520d’s are still reasonably in demand especially if automatic.
If they write it off and you buy it back off them there's a plentiful supply of parts for them around in breakers yards. So it'd be possible get it sorted without breaking the bank.
Provided it's a common colour there'd even be a very good chance of getting a bonnet and front bumper the right colour that'd look good enough.
That's all good if you have a farm or some other place to store it. Looks the pits in a housing estate a car parked up with parts off it.
yup! many people buy the car off them and keep for parts for another same car they get OR just sell some parts of it. Even the rear lights on yours would fetch €100 alone never mind body panels or anything else.
All cars are gone up though that's the thing. I wouldn't say a Honda accord has gone up more than the market itself, maybe so the petrol engine as they are bullet proof where as the diesels, especially ones with DPF can be dogs.
Sold a 2005 Accord in 2015 for <€1000 to a neighbour, and he used it for another 5 years before selling it on.
Great cars but I can't believe these are still going for >1000.
If they write it off and pay out, then the car becomes the property of the insurance company They normally sell it to a scrap yard for it's salvage value. If you want to buy it back from the insurance company then they can adjust it's write off value to you less the salvage amount that they would have got for it. The car then becomes your to do what you want with it. If they opt to repair it instead then obviously none of that applies.
I'll be honest its my first accident and if "first" write off. So even thou I would get the "market value" for the car I could buy it back?
Ah ok! Well make sure to see how much it is to buy it back from them if it is written off. Could be €100, well worth it.
It's 520D with few miles on the clock. Damaged the front bumper, bonnet, probably radiator and front support bar. On Thursday morning got email about write off, ok no big deal I thought, had in mind changing it already, but then few hours later got a text stating that there's gonna be additional engineer assessment required. Called AXA, of course had to wait half day to get thru the line. Agent response was great, yhmmmm we will fix it(?). Meant to get call today with the response. Its 4pm and still nothing.
What car do you have that is being written off?
Thanks for the suggestions. That Saabs are tempting. I'll take a look at them.
Now I only need AXA to decide what they want to do with my car, they have a quite big mess in claims department. My car was written off and got ordered an additional inspection on the same day.
Or if you're a petrol head this would also be worth a shot (although only some insurance companies insure older cars on non classic policies)
2.0T petrol 150 (€150 to map to 220hp) €2,450

Based on your two posts this might fit.
Solid car again, the usual stuff can go wrong but it's not expensive, mainly check for rust and the bushings are soft in it.
Autogearbox in these are absolutely fine, you get paddle shifters in sport mode if that's your thing. Heated seats, zircon, cruise control and the most comfortable car seats you will ever sit in.
budget getting one of the Saab specialists to go over it and and you might have an incredible car on your hands.
Plus tax and NCT to Feb 2024.

😂😂
I saw couple of them already, probably would be 1st on my list if not for 1.7 engine which doesn't have the best reviews.
Crazy idea to look into Prius?
Honda Stream:

Ah to be fair I buy those types of cars for around half that quite regularly. You just have to wait for bargains and negotiate hard. Neither of them will get €4k for those cars
Something which won't break my budget. I've had 520d till now, lovely car but to expensive in my current situation, I'm on Illness Benefit till atleast next year.
I'm not **** on your post or anything cos fair play you looked for the cars and went to the trouble of posting them... but my god, thats grim what you get for 4k these days :(
Bit of a boring choice but you’d get either of these under budget after some negotiations. These will be way more reliable than anything German of this era.

Looks to be mid mid-00’s Merc E200 kompressors and 520D’s with intergalactic mail rage on DoneDeal for your budget.
Any particular brand or car style in mind?
Jaysus, you're only a skinny midget.
To be big enough to fit 2m 150kg guy, and go uphill without me pushing it.
I'm going to school, gonna travel in morning rush hour, therefore the automatic choice.
Depends what you want from the car
What would be a automatic banger worth looking for? Between 2000-3500€?
