He doesn't want to spot or point out the obvious as it will show he was barking up the wrong tree.
I think the pilot might have given services free, but a chopper is an incredibly expensive thing to run and those costs would have to be covered. I know it was to speed Ryan after LLS, but terminally ill Charlie had been on LLS too and his wife drove him, after little rest, with their dog Tiger in tow. Ryan could have arrived somewhat later, but of course was important to get in the picture.
RTE can expect an invoice for that helicopter
