Soft day in Beijing
Iran has announced a nationwide shutdown due to "unprecedented heat".
A two-day national holiday will start tomorrow with governmental offices, banks and schools all closing.
The decision came after the meteorological office forecast temperatures exceeding 40 degrees in many cities, and hovering around 50 degrees in the southwest.
State broadcaster IRIB has said many cities including in the provinces of Ilam, Bushehr, and Khuzestan have seen temperatures rise above 45 degrees in recent days.
“The cabinet agreed to the health ministry proposal to declare Wednesday and Thursday public holidays all over the country to protect public health,” the official IRNA news agency quoted government spokesman Ali Bahadori Jahromi as saying.
IRNA said the decision was taken because of what it described as an “unprecedented” heatwave across the country.
According to IRIB, Dehloran city in western Iran recorded the highest temperature of 50 degrees in Iran over the past 24 hours.
It added that temperatures were expected to rise in the north as well, including in the city of Ardabil as well as at the southern shores of the Caspian sea.
The health ministry has warned of the risks of heatstroke from over-exposure to the sun, and urged people to stay indoors between 10.00am and 4.00pm.
That high on Monday ended the 31-day record of consecutive days of high temperatures of 110 degrees Fahrenheit or higher.
The 31-day streak blew exceeds the previous record of 18 consecutive days set in 1974.

Red rainfall warning for parts of Norway and Sweden.
Norway
A red danger warning for extremely heavy rainfall has been issued for parts of Southern Norway. In many places, the event will be among the strongest in the last 25 years. The red level signifies the highest level of risk for rain.
On the East Coast, north of Oslo, as well as the eastern parts of the former counties of Sogn og Fjordane, Møre og Romsdal, and the southern part of Trøndelag, extreme amounts of rain are expected, 80-100 mm within 24 hours.
The danger warning is in effect from Monday morning until Tuesday evening.
The precipitation approaches from Sweden on Sunday evening and increases in intensity on Monday morning. The heaviest rainfall is expected from Monday afternoon to Tuesday afternoon. There is also a risk of heavy rainfall during the warning period, 20-35 mm per hour. Due to the uncertainty regarding heavy rainfall, it is also uncertain where exactly the highest daily values will occur.
In addition, an orange-level warning for rain is in effect, indicating 60-80 mm within 24 hours, as well as a yellow-level warning, indicating 40-60 mm within 24 hours, in the areas surrounding the red danger warning. Most counties in Southern Norway will be affected to a greater or lesser extent.

In central U.S., stagnant heat wave conditions under record-breaking 603 dm high, maturing corn crop is "sweating" and adding considerably to local dew points, which would be 23-26 C in the humid tropical air mass but locally reported at 29-33 C near Iowa-Missouri border. Air temperatures only a bit above those dew points. Further west where crop is wheat rather than corn, not as humid but scorching heat into low/mid 40s. There was a similar event in July 1995. (not quite as bad as that report from Iran but heat index values above 50 C).
Meanwhile, unusual rainfalls in southern California and Nevada from the recent tropical storm (hilary), Death Valley on Sunday had almost 50 mm rain and a high of "only" 25 C (normal max there is close to 47 C). Tonopah Nevada at a higher elevation had a max of only 14 C (normal there is 30 C), Las Vegas topped off around 27 C. The rain has moved up into eastern WA and northern ID, s.e. BC and I've seen a bit here, with fog and mist, but the circulation of the tropical storm is completely broken up as it tries to cross numerous mountain ranges.

Some insane rainfall forecast for Greece
Out of curiosity, have we (Ireland) every had a red warning for rain?
Storm Desmond in 2015. Donegal, Clare, Kerry and Connacht had a red rainfall warning. Other than that I can’t think of one but Cork and Kerry might have had one around that time. We’ve had rainfalls that reached red criteria but no red warning was issued like raphoe this summer but it was pretty localised. @sryanbruen will know.
Looks like a medicane is on the way to Greece, after the wildfires and drought even without these crazy numbers there is likely going to be huge flooding and devastation :(
