I think PK and RT could have had big discussions had they wanted. Ireland is very tame, taboo subjects just would not be approached. But even if you take away the "taboo" of Gay Byrne it was still an entertaining show.
You talk of Panels during his era they weren't just there to talk about the issues of the day, they were also entertaining. He brought people on who could banter with one another. There was no need for a bin to sit in from of them. They did what Irish people do they talked and Gay allowed them to chat and rebuke, laugh and get angry.
I don't think there was ever a quite moment on PK and RT, where the audience were intent on listening to the interviewee or the panel.
Then you have music and comedy. RT never had a stand up do a routine, and never offer a new stand up that opportunity.
Gay Byrne wasn't afraid to let the Late Late show take him somewhere it wasn't intended regardless of the subject. PK and RT had A to H and never wandered to get to Z before they might reach M, while failing to get to C.

Yes, there was that nothingburger story a few years ago that everyone has forgotten about. The woman who worked for some firm or group that was in the middle of a campaign about insurance fraud. She fell off a swing or something and tried to sue for all sorts of damage, but then pulled the claim when the nothingburger story broke, even though it was a nothingburger story and nothing came of it. At least that is what we were told would happen, so I just stopped following it there and then. I am not entirely sure how long it went on for, but I think it went on for more than the two months that this has for so far.

Yes, the LLS under Gay was almost a variety performance show. It certainly had the variety. One segment would be a discussion on condoms, followed by Niall Toibin doing a spot of comedy, then an interview with a hollywood actor, then a new band called identifies-as-a-boy-zone, do some form of singing,. It was a mixed bag every night. And there were special shows, or different projects and things.
PK settled into a purely chat show, but kept the music and comedy.
RT, got rid of the music, aside from the inhouse band, got rid of comedy and in recent years got rid of, or wasn't able to get the Hollywood actors. So, every Friday it was either Dermot Bannon or Francis Brennan, Z-list RTE celebs, and the odd sports star.
It just became bland and like every other chat show but with a less entertaining host.
