They badly need to build a couple of more stars though. Organically. ie not the way they tried with Darren Till.
Couldn't agree more. I would love if the UFC would cut the amount of cards they put on by about half. One big event a month and maybe one other fight night. I be looking at the cards on Wikipedia and I haven't got a clue who 3/4's of these people are...
I seen Till has been released
Yeah no surprise there
Bo Nickal fights this weekend.
Yeah seen that, it'll last 30 seconds max I'd guess.
The guy I'd compare him to is Chimaev. He's just a killer. They fight in different divisions but I'd expect both to be champions.
I know it's very early to be calling that for Nickal but he's been a world champion and collegiate champion wrestler multiple times. He has unbelievable strength.
He’s an excellent wrestler. But I think you are overselling him a bit.
He was a D1 champ, prob the best wrestler on the college circuit at the time. But there were better wrestlers overall.
He wasn’t a world champion, I don’t think he even qualified. And he didn’t make the Olympic team. There were simply better wrestlers in those spots.
Ben Askren has similar credentials, plus being an Olympian. Smashed the junior leagues, undefeated for 20 fights, but not UFC champ material. Bo has to prove he can strike to a reasonably level before I’ll see him as a future champ.
But I do think he is kyptonite for Chimeav.
I think Chimaev would destroy him,
There's only 1 years difference in age & Chimaev is far more experienced in MMA , wrestling would probably cancel each other out & it would come down to striking ,
Bo missed out on the 2020 Olympics because he wrestled David Taylor for a spot on the team & lost , Taylor was a 2 time World Champion & actually went on to win the Olympics so np shame in losing to that man ,
Absolutely no shame losing to Dave Taylor. I was just pointing out he was never the world champion. When he was at a different weight (to avoid Taylor) he was beaten by J’den Cox - another world champion. No shame there either. He was very good a solid no.2, but wrestlers with similar credentials have had a shot too.
Chimeav has more mma experience. But nowhere near the wrestling credentials. But I also think he’s be cocky enough try wrestle with Bo.
I think Chimeav may be a better all round grappler,
His wrestling record is unreal although its is Sweden 23 -0 at the national championships , talk he came 3rd in Russia Jr but not sure if that is true ,
Also rumour he actually did lose 1 in Sweden but he changed his name .His original name is Khamzat Girikhanov ,
His wrestling record is unreal although its is Sweden 23 -0 at the national championships ,
I don’t find that that particularly unreal tbh. For a start it’s Sweden, not going to be as nearly competitive as D1.
Plus wrestling records are not like mma records. 100s of wins is normal. Bo’s D1 record is 120-3 (plus 100s of other wins overall).
Ahh come on now he's still the best by a country mile in Sweden , He only lost a combined 6 points in them 23 matches, its a fantastic record , of course its not as competitive as D1 but its still outstanding ,
Im not suggesting he’s not the best in Sweden. I’m saying the best is Sweden is not particularly amazing.
He’s clearly a very good wrestler. But the conversation starting point was whether is on Bo’s level. On my view he’s not.
Pure wrestling i agree but i think he may be the better MMA grappler only time will tell,
If im wrong I'll have no problem with that ,
Watching the highlights of the 285 press conference, this feels like the biggest event in a long time. Huge crowd, cracking atmosphere, it's the closest they've come to the same levels of hype in the run up to a fight since the peak McGregor years.
He was under 23 world champion twice, I wasn't suggesting he was senior world champ just that he'd win world titles. His first fight was a brutal knockout but against much weaker opposition than hell face now.
I wasn't suggesting he'd face or beat Chimaev just that to me he looks a similar type. They are at different weights.
He's nothing like Askren because he doesn't have to use wrestling, he's very good on his feet and he can sub without a takedown.
I'm aware he was U23 world champion, only once AFAIK. But that's very different to being "world champion" without other qualification.
Same way as somebody being the Brown belt world champion in BJJ is not considered a real world champion. It's just the name. Or saying Tyrone are the current All-Ireland champs would be considered incorrect - even though that are U20 champions.
The judge who gave Vera that fight should be fired, he was dominated all fight ffs.
Yeah I couldn't believe when they said split decision.
Maycee Barber getting the win over Andrea Lee was ridiculous too.
That was one of the best Fight Nights of recent times. All the main card fights were great - MacKenzie Dern put a serious beating on Angela Hill, that was insane, never seen her fight like that before.
Dern is going through a divorce, might be training harder than ever and taking all her frustration out in the ring.
Barez should have went for the pound n ground when he knocked Filho down the second time.
Great recovery from Filho.
Brasil while not elite looked UFC calibre, Bannon unfortunately not so much.
Comfortable win for Brasil.
What's the point in throwing a front kick if you're not gonna follow up?
Brutal tactics from Bannon. Then again, look at who's in her corner lol.
Heard Bannon got a gift there
edit.. she lost, yes?
Yes, UD.
29-28
30-27
Ashmouz did well in the second considering he's fighting with one arm.
Time to get Joel Alvarez a fight against top 15 next.
17 submissions in 20 fights is crazy and the other 3 wins were finishes.
6'3 in the LW division...
Surely that's it for Molly McCann now...
Amateurish beyond belief. She rolled herself into that armbar.
