A new study has found that despite Minimum Unit Pricing (MUP), alcohol is now almost 70pc more affordable in Irish shops and off-licences than it was 20 years ago.
Oh wait a minute....
The report was commissioned by Alcohol Action Ireland.....

"In other jurisdictions, such as Australia, there is an automatic uprating of duties in line with inflation. It is of note that the 2022 report from the Commission on Taxation and Welfare recommended that the link between the public health rationale and design of alcohol taxes should be strengthened,” she said.
“Given that alcohol places a heavy burden on the health service, with 1,500 hospital beds in use every day for alcohol related illness, it is vital that the government use all the policy measures at its disposal to address alcohol harm.”
Dr Gilheany said the alcohol industry “frequently decries” the level of alcohol duties in Ireland, but argued that “in reality alcohol costs Ireland at least €3.7 billion annually while alcohol duties only raise around €1.2 billion annually”.

this is interesting, Australia actually get the money, genius idea, the goons in charge here let the shops take the bulk of it, we get a small % as an increase in VAT. Also I estimated that if we had increased excise to match MUP we would have got an additional €1.9 billion in tax annually. Instead the supermarkets get that, hard to estimate what the supermarkets and offies over the border are getting.
Back to bargains, tesco have budvar 500ml cans 4 for 8euro, but my local has none stocked. They have the ongoing 12x330ml budvar for 16.50 (both with clubcard)
Since MUP came in I don't think I've bought alcohol for home use in this country. Dublin is too close to the North to pay the ridiculous prices here any more. I have plenty of alcohol, I fly to the UK often enough to keep my spirit collection stocked from duty free and wine and beer is a trip up North every couple of months
I'd have no problem making the trip up north for wine & beer & filling the car, but not seeing the value anywhere. Any advice on where the savings are to be had would be very welcome. Thanks

Your quote also highlights the problem with the selective use of data to support a position as it notes 'recomendations', not actual implimentation. Australia doesnt have MUP across its various states , except for the Northern Territory, which covers about 1% of the population. Also Australia's taxation system of alcohol is incoherent according to this article.

It should also be noted that Australia doesn't have a land border with another country and a booze cruise to NZ isn't really an option...
I've ordered from Castle Off Licence in Tralee several times and they always ship in a plastic crate, really handy for storage before use and then for keeping the empties in after use and before bottle bank. Delivery is only €10 and they cover the 32 counties at that price and there is no minimum order. You can mix and match a multitude of different beers and they all come together. They have heaps of different stuff available and I cannot fault their service, usually 4 to 5 working days from payment.
Lidl have these boxes of Belgian strong beer for €15

Not cheap for six but they're very strong, four of them are 10.5% the other two are 9% and 7.2%

My local dunnes was closed early tonight so I had the misfortune of buying from just chillin off licence in ongar, well its some robbing kip, €19.25 for eight cans of hop house13, needless to say I didn't buy them, got six Heineken for €15, absolute robbers, and to think they were good value before MUP. I've been three times since it came in.
Got them before a few times and very good quality beers.
My local Lidl didn't have any though today (Sunday)

If you enjoy it at €2 it's a bit of a booze deal.
Pre-mix spirit drinks usually work out very bad value, about the same ABV as a beer, about the same cost, but half the size. As seems to be the case here.
West Cork whiskeys are good but there's no guarantee that what goes into a pre-mix is anything like the same quality spirit that gets sold on its own.
Have you actually seen it on shelves?
I had a look for their whiskey old fashioned on shelves but no sign of either.
