Aldi have potatoes in a bag you can microwave.
Can you boil these by taking out of the bag? They are just ordinary potatoes? It's the bag that is special?
They have the right amount for me. Bigger bags and half end up in the bin
I'm 99% certain that the bag is the special thing - its basically got a pressure valve to let it steam the potatoes in the microwave. They might be a tad damper also, so you would need to use the lot in one go.
They're also usually well washed as they're expected to be eaten straight from the bag
OK thanks. All would be used all in one go not many in the bag.
Yes you can.
”microwave” potatoes are little more than (usually) baby potatoes in a plastic bag much thicker and more heat resistant than usual.
There will indeed be moisture in the bag to steam the potatoes, just pat them dry if there’s any leftover.
You might be paying more for less though if not cooking in the microwave usually it’s a bit more expensive on account of the extra processing and extra packaging etc
Uh
more expensive compared to buying a standard bag of the same potatoes I mean
I've done it, potatoes were just fine!
OK guys thanks.
Genuine question - why would you dry potatoes you're about to boil???
And yeah, they're way more expensive by weight than the normal bag of baby spuds. Would you not just buy the standard ones and cook fewer at a time? They keep for weeks in a cool, dark spot. Just take them out of the bag and don't store them with onions.
Yes, just buy the normal ones and keep them in the salad crisper in the fridge. They keep for ages.
I said any you have leftover, so the ones you don’t cook not the ones you’re going to cook 😎
No!! Potatoes don’t go in the fridge! 😭
nothing wrong with keeping spuds in the fridge mi amigo, i find it stops them sprouting, its a cool dark place
It’s a cold dark place not a cool dark place!
Potatoes kept in the fridge will cause the starch to breakdown into sugar so you’ll end up with darker & sweeter potatoes.
I’m not sure how true it is but it can also lead to higher concentrations of carcinogens found within the potato.
trust me you don’t keep potatoes in the fridge. They won’t last longer and you’re going to ruin them at best.
that is not current advice I'm afraid
you must have missed the memo
Potatoes are stored in Fridges for months before packing for stores.
You think they are dug the day before they arrive into stores??
yes same as almost anything that is seasonable and can be stored, apples a classic example, stored in warehouses for a year pumped full of nitrogen
Potatoes ideally should be steamed rather than boiled. Stops them overcooking and splitting into a soggy mess and need less supervising. Was always a bone of contention between me and my mother who made a big drama of boiling them and then a tragedy when they split and were ruined!!
Wouldn’t store in the fridge mostly because I have little space. More important to remove them from a plastic bag and keep in the dark to prevent going green.
You can cook any potato in the microwave, just add a little water and put in a covered bowl to boil, or bake.
Those little salad potatoes in the bags are usually waxy types, not the floury ones that fall apart as soon as they catch sight of boiling water, so it makes no difference how you cook them really.
Potatoes are god's own food!! How anyone can ever leave them uneaten, in or out of the fridge, so long that they end up going off and needing to be binned, is an absolute mystery to me.
You cannot bake a potato in the microwave. It may be cooked but it sure isn't baked. Pretty much like you cannot bake a potato in a pot of water.
I often make potatoes in the microwave, but I don't boil them before, I just bake them with seasonings for 15 minutes
Yes you can. Microwaves are ovens at the end of the day.
I like my (baked) spuds cooked in the microwave, then thrown in the air fryer for 10 mins to crisp up the skin.
Have never boiled them. I sometimes buy the microwave bag when down at my parents as I can't find the lid for the small saucepan. There's enough potatoes for 2 servings and they cook in 8 minutes.
A microwaved potato is not the same as an conventional oven baked potato. It jus isn't.
I can see that working.
I usually start them in the microwave and finish in hot oven if I'm in a hurry.
I always steam baby potatoes, yes they are waxy not floury, but they’ve an earthy sweet taste, but of real butter a pinch of salt and a steak and salad, and you’ve a lovely dinner!
They're called microwave ovens but the cooking process is entirely different to baking in a conventional oven.
Obviously but be that as it may microwave baked potatoes are totally possible.
I’ve done it plenty of times. It’s just a matter of how you do it
No one disputes that one can cook potatoes in the microwave.
The fact remains that it is a completely different cooking method, a different apparatus and a completely different result. They aren't baked potatoes. They are microwaved potatoes. Perhaps, to you, they appear similar but to many of us, they are very different things.
I could claim, repeatedly, that I can bake potatoes in a pot of water but it wouldn't make me right.
For everyone's sake, I shan't make the point again.
