Calves being exported for veal are heard bawling with hunger on the ferry crossing, and can be 21 hours without food as they are removed from their mothers before they are weaned. Numerous breaches of animal welfare in marts here as bull calves are considered worthless because they can't be used for dairy or fattened up enough for beef.
This is absolutely sickening.

There should no more live exporting of Irish animals.
i wasn't aware of any plans but i'm not a farmer, any links? but i mean if we want to introduce more nature to ireland we probably do need to change how the land is used somewhat and let some of it regenerate without being farmed.

what did they do with calves before these mass exports started happening? is it just that since the milk quotas are gone the particular dairy breeds don't produce male calves that are of any use in ireland so they have to be exported?
It didn’t get much coverage but a few weeks ago a DEPT OF AGRICULTURE veterinary inspector, Michael O’Reily who had a puppy farm in Cork was ordered to close it because of welfare concerns, filth, no food or water , the usual. One week later, the closure notice was rescinded, no further action and apparently nothing to see. Google it in the Sunday World. That’s what animal welfare campaigners are up against. The Dept. Of Agriculture are at the heart of it, they do not give a shxx about animal welfare.
Maybe we can slaughter them at home and produce veal?

Yeah it's an exemption the EU have given us but will be withdrawn I reckon over the coming years. It's driven by nitrates in water I think and that's then linked to organic manure. It ignores nitrate leaching from tillage completely

I didn't watch it either, the articles were upsetting enough. Cows, pigs, chickens, greyhounds all treated as commodities, then there's the widespread neglect and abuse of companion animals.
Laws need to be toughened up and actually enforced, it's frightening that this is still happening. I hope the people involved die roaring.

What we saw is indefensible abuse of dumb animals for profit.
There was always a live export trade out of Ireland back to the 1600's. It was calves, weanlings in ships then too. Exported to the fens of east england for fattening. Then recent times the dublin cattle market was an export hub to the boats and railways of the UK.
Freisian bull calves were worth a few bob so sold in the mart.
Say your limousine, chaorlaois, simmental (beef breed) bull calf was worth €280 say, a freisian bull calf was worth €100 ish. They male freisian grows tall but wouldn't put on much weight.
I'm farming background, beef. I'd be very fond of them all, that was a hard watch.

Did the programme mention that a percentage of these calves are shipped much further outside of the EU to even worse conditions.
Why can't they be killed at birth or even aborted here rather than put them through such cruelty ?
What is the net income to Ireland for this cruelty ? How many animals are we willing to torture and for what cost per animal. Do we make 5 euro, for example, per calf we torture ? Would you pay more for milk and beef to end this torture ?
Also, there are other farmed animals that are treated even more terribly than these calves.
Calves that would travel to your local mart, spend 3 or 4 hours there before going to their new home. They would be stressed enough after a few hours, let alone 22 hours in hot weather in poorly ventilated trailers.
Well hopefully they would join the lucky ones that get killed straightaway.

This was done in the past rose veal and the factories screwed the fellas doing it and made it uneconomical.

If the Hynes are so worried about this, simple answer to solve this next year keep all their own calves and rear them to beef, but that won’t happen with their own greed for white gold. The clown from from cork the advisor about New Zealand model is the lad that forgot to take into account the 300k extra calves with expansion in to the system and is behind the breeding of an inferior cow from New Zealand model compared to the original Irish dairy cow. He should have being sacked for such an error.
