NRA have this morning advertised for engineering consultancy to design medium to long term solution to the junction!
:):)
Some in this forum (and also the Dronehawk guy) have speculated that the route from the tunnel to the M8N might not be switched to its final alignment for a few more months. What's the basis for that theory? I don't see anything that would stop that switch from happening very soon. Most of the surface is already laid from what I can make out. The current routing west of the old roundabout gets in the way of constructing the N25W to N8N link.
I think the merge into the current M8(N) is do-able, but maybe will have to wait until the rest of that big bridge is constructed and the merge is larger.
Half the problems on the N25W were caused by that speed camera van. It's 60kmh all along that bit, and everyone was stamping on the brakes and I had to stop briefly because of others doing this. This was causing a minor delay even at 710am.
So basically the speed van and people being morons is whats causing the N25W delays this morning - as well as possibly minor tailbacks from the dumbell - N25W temp merge later on. Bigger tests this evening on N40E to tunnel but it looked like it all went very well on that direction this morning.
Yeah. That can be switched over very quickly I suspect. Within a month if they want to.
They’ll have to do so to finish the N25 west to M8 north movement.
People behave completely irrationally when they see a speed van or Garda car. Instead of just slowing to the speed limit they tend to drop their speed way below the limit. I was coming down the M8 yesterday and, because I knew that there were two vans at that time on approach to the DKI, I had the cruise control bang on 60 (62 indicated). This of course meant that I had 4-5 cars right up my árse. But as soon as they saw the vans they jumped on the brakes and I suddenly had a huge gap behind me. It's like people actually have no clue what speed they're doing and just instinctively brake just in case.
Not really following your point about needing a larger merge. I'm just saying that they could close the existing temporary link (red below) and open the final link (green). No additional merge space required because it goes over the same bridge.
What is the idea of the bigger wider bridge deck where they are currently doing steelworks. More lanes heading M8N?
Everything coming from the East I believe will be heading up that.
Correction to direction.
From the East no?
So you don't like zipper merging which is the advised method in many countries?
Yes, Correct. Brain is backwards this morning.
ST 08 is to facilitate link C westbound traffic from N25 . I might be wrong but I think the extra width at the southern end is only to reduce the approach curve.
Also , Is it just me but when you will eventually travel north over ST08 , and drive enough of a distance to view traffic coming from behind on the outside lane (but obscured by the dividing wall ) you'll will practically be on top of the merge from link U ( city to M8) by the time that happens. That's two merges in about 200 metres
The question remains why they spanned so much of the gap alongside the existing bridge. I can only assume it’s to improve sight lines for those merging into the mainline as the very wide bridge will require no intervening concrete walls.
This was my question previously too. Might just be an ease/cost of construction thing again.
A good few on the N22 alright but it's a moot point!
Edit, I'm wrong! I always thought there were beg buttons at Ovens, Lissarda and Farran, but Google Streetview says there aren't. My apologies!
I’m now convinced it’s mainly due to improved sight lines. I’d imagine that the current M8 mainline will have its left concrete wall removed when the new bridge is built.
Construction of the embankment at the tunnel exist has restarted.
Looks like a parking lot in one of the lanes outside. Looking at it from the office and it's still early
Crash on approach to the Dunkettle Roundabout by the looks of things.
Eastbound traffic is ok but that’s school traffic free so a caveat.
Not a surprise there's a crash really. Hopefully doesn't take long to clear
But people should be fully utilising both lanes until one closes, then merge in turn (or zipper merge as its also known). You should not have one lane full of cars and the other empty. Doing it properly effectively halves the length of the queue from the merge point back and avoids possible blocking of junctions further back.
The N25 diverge isn’t setup as a zipper merge though. The left lane merged into the right lane which is seen as mainline.
Tunnel Northbound backed up to Bloomfield
N25W backed up towards Carrigtwohill.
Just looking at the cameras, there is a tailback from the Glanmire roundabout going right back over the Intersection and into the N25w distance, it is moving constantly but slowly, it does not appear to be impacting the tunnel to N8 West ( City Bound ).
I wonder about the N40 traffic backed up to Bloomfield, is there an issue on the N40 as the flow from the tunnel is constant.
Now the tailback on the N40 is beyond Bloomfield.
In theory, that's right if the merging takes place towards the back of the queue or if, by some magical formula, both queues are of equal length.
The practice of merging at the point of the lane end/closure, or diving in from an adjacent unaffected lane, means those merging (barging) in at the last minute only add to the front of the queue causeing those further back the queue to progress even slower.
Going out of Little Island West was good anyway. Nice and quick
Id say once people start speeding up, it might be ok but I can see some crashes (particularly the merge of westbound traffic and Dublin). Things are just too tight
You obviously don't understand zipper merging. The reason the queues aren't the same length is because people aren't using the zipper merge method and instead are stupidly all joining the queue in lane 1 when there is a lane free.
If everyone stayed in their lane instead of joining the back of the queue in lane 1 then both queues would be of equal length. If people can't cop that on its not my problem. I will continue to use the road and merge when the lane I'm in ends.
You seem like a nice person.
Thanks, I'm quite popular actually.
