When it came to Patrick Kielty he was happy for it or asked for it to be released.
They never seem to help when he's using them for the radio show, although he might actually bother to prepare for this unlike the job he's overpaid to do.

Looking at the whole debacle in the round , how complicated it is , how complicated it will be to sort it out - especially with the human resource element and trying to deal with the ‘ongoing interest of the PAC , et al, I THINK THAT IT WAS EXTREMELY PREMATURE TO HAVE K. BACKHURST IN B4 THE PAC OF DAY TWO ON THE JOB. It’s ABSOLUTLY ridiculous. It tells me how far removed the PAC members are from how things work, what you need to do before you make big decisions on restructuring / policy , etc. In this case there is such a thing such as talking to staff, gathering information,doing a lot if listening, etc, etc, etc, etc before one finally decides on what to do re the major areas needing decisions.
Bakhurst has been given one day to do all of the above. Je-us wept
I don't know about other countries but here in Ireland it's discrimination if you don't hire them because they are married.

Contractors are common in broadcasting though, make them employees of RTE and you'll never get rid of them.

I have to agree. They seem to have created yet another senior manager who can do as he pleases in RTE. I would take all hiring/firing/promotion responsibilities off RTE management until the forensic audit and review is complete. We could be doubling down on the rot with Backhurst. We don't know his role in this debacle yet and he was part of the shady dealings culture.
The problem with RTE presenter contractors is that they get a CONTRACT!
Firstly, the roles aren't advertised. I would love to know how, for example, Louise Duffy was chosen for the Ronan Collins slot. How many others were considered and who were they? Who wasn't considered but should have been?
Then there's the question of talent. In RTE's case frequently the talent isn't talented!
Then there's the question of pay and we've seen how crazy that is.
And there's the question of output. In the case of Brendan O'Connor about 160 hours of radio per YEAR!
Fixed term contracts could be used.
All RT is going to say iis that he wasn't involved on his day to day handling of his finances......he'll act dumb, look stupid but will come out of it unscathed....his agent will probably take a lot of the flak but he'll take it if it means RT can get back on the airwaves
If Tubs/NK go down that route, they are both finished with RTE, especially if something is revealed later that they didn't reveal.
This has been a disastrous exercise in PR from Tubs/NK right from the start and this is their last chance to save their careers.
All based on editorial decisions and connections. Just as Doirean Garritys family boats were chosen for editorial reasons. Hopefully this changes and people can actually tender for this. Feels like RTE are not maximising the commercial side.
Also feels like some presenters on RTE are basically walking advertising hoardings.
If Tubs does give an honest account of everything he knows he will be blacklisted by any potential employers, he's more than likely finished in RTE so what does he do?
Try the innocent, poor me act and hope someone else hires him, or take as many as possible down with him?
If he actually believes he's talented enough to warrant his huge salary he'll likely play it coy and dream of the BBC, ITV and Channel 4 fighting over him.
He might be lucky and get a gig as entertainer on Dublin Bay Cruises. 😂

What do you mean they get a contract, staff would have a contract too. You think they should be on publicjobs.ie or something?
None of those issues you raise are anything to do with employing contractors, all rte management issues. If you made everyone presenting on rte a member of staff you'd be stuck with them for life

If they are all working for RTE and the show is making money who cares?
The problem in RTE is these contractors making big money and not paying tax as a normal employee would. All while RTE is losing millions each year
Getting bogged down in a specific actor who you dislike is not really reform, reform is reviewing the entire setup from top to bottom. Also the fact nobody should be in RTE unless they are working for RTE. No more of this contractor nonsense
He has already acknowledged he should have asked questions when his salary was published though, so he'll need to weasel out of that one.
