Marital status is now called civil status - so single, married, divorced, same sex relationship etc. It would be illegal for an employer to discriminate against a divorced person because the employer is religious etc.
It's not illegal to hire a family member, but organisations should advertise positions and hold competitive interviews, it would be illegal to employ person A because they're related to you when person B was demonstrably more qualified and experienced.
We all know that doesn't always happen in the real world, but RTE is reliant on state and licence fee funding and should be playing by the rules. They're not, and Lottie Ryan is proof of that.

I'm not suggesting anything about the work of these people. I'm only pointing out familial relationships.

No, I don't see something specific about it protecting who you are married to. But it still stops discrimination against you if you are married to someone in an organisation and that organisation has a policy of not hiring spouses of employees, i.e. they won't give you an interview because your spouse works in the organisation.
I'm open to correction but my reading of it is that you can't penalise someone for either being married or not being married, full stop. Therefore it would prevent a company from discriminating against someone whose spouse works in the same organisation. It's not specifically written to say you can't bar someone's spouse from applying for a job, but ultimately it would make such a decision illegal because the company would be banning someone because they are married.

The post I was replying to was where someone asked a question about staff being related rather than a conflict of interest situation.
If you are related to someone, e.g. someone's wife, then you can't be banned from a job under the legislation. That's clear, marital status is one of the protected categories.
Looking at the definition of Family Status, I was mistaken on its meaning so apologies for that.
Regarding rules around interview panels. It's very difficult to ensure a level playing field. I'm not talking about pulling strokes here and trying to influence the interview panel but it's quite easy for someone in an organisation to help coach their siblings/friends/relatives for an interview in that organisation. It might possibly give them some inside knowledge and therefore give them an advantage when going for the job. I freely admit that I've helped friends to prepare for an interview in the organisation that I'm a part of. And when I was going for my interview, I know I asked every friend I knew who worked there for as much information as possible.

Any time there is a vacancy we try to fill the post with a relative of an existing staff member.

Ian Dempsey's father is Des. Retired senior official in Revenue. Don't ask me how I know lol..... Not sure if he is still with us or not. But ID's dad is not fifty million coats for sure.
I doubt there's any way to know if people got their jobs in RTE on their own merit or if they had a helping hand from a family member already there. It's a bit unfair to hint that all related people in RTE got there through shennanigans.
Another point. I now you are not saying that there should be a policy to stop relatives working in the same organisation but policies that ban spouses, siblings or relations from working in the same organisation are illegal under the Equal Status Acts.

They cover the nine grounds of gender, marital status, family status, age, disability, sexual orientation, race, religion, and membership of the Traveller community.
Anyone know how many of the RTE staff are related? Would it be possible to find out? It seems that once you got in there and licked up to the bosses then you could get family members in and looked after. Disgraceful .
