This rubbish again? How about you head off to the 1950s with an attitude like that?
I have a feeling that the reason she gets flak is that she is a woman who has consistently tried to speak up about women's sport. But maybe that's me just being cynical?
Maybe that could be part of it with for a minority but i like women's sport. It might not be as interesting to me as men's sport but it's undoubtedly important that its maintained to a decent standard.
SOC just leaves me cold for whatever reason.
Yeah I'm the same.
It's true though.
I'll definitely watch some of the womens WC but being in Australia times will more than likely be shít.
What attitude should he have?
Thurs 20 11am
Wednesday 26 1pm
Monday 31 11am
I'll be able to watch.
It’s shite times for most-If they were to make it out of group second round game will be on a weekend which would be an event
Probably the common sense that things don't have to be the very highest possible example of a sport to still have merit, still warrant a following, and still be very engaging, entertaining and well worth watching.
Also that women's sport is simply a different thing to mens sport. Games work a different way. Different tactics get results. Different methods and styles suit the players attributes. And it's all the better for it.
Yeah, anyone who claims the top level sport argument while watching the men's national team is talking rubbish. Most people watch sport for other reasons than just seeing top level sports.
Was about to make the exact same point. Our men’s team are absolutely shite and there is no problem with there being podcasts talking about them.
Our women’s team have gone and qualified for their first World Cup. It’s clearly a topic that should get coverage on a show like SC which gives a lot of football coverage.
I watch the men’s team because I support Ireland. Not for the quality of the game. I’ll be supporting the women’s team for the exact same reason.
I loved Ken's sanitised wording of the "hairdryer".
He was on form today.
As a cricket player (when in England) Ken's wonderment at the rules was very funny.
I wish Murph had've referred to Bodyline as Fast Leg Theory...but hey Cricket got a mention. For mostly the wrong reasons...but a mention is a mention.
Good to have Ken back all the same.
Delighted Ken is going to Australia, was planning on watching anyway but will add an extra level of interest in the world cup.
The stuff with Vera Pauw and Heston Dash is a bit mad, hard to know who or what to believe
Feel the truth falls somewhere in between, most incidents sound open to different interpretation
Slow news day at Athletic Towers.
A complete and unashamed re-hash.
Yeah, got the impression some of the staff and players couldn't handle her coaching style which they considered bullying when it probably isn't and they wanted a more softer approach, but felt like she may have taken some bits too far. Like the video on the personality types was a bit odd
Hofstede's work is widely taught. I completed a degree in the past few years, and it was covered so its not the antiquated work Murph suspected. I agree that some people cant handle her style.
Very interesting debate to consider what is appropriate between male coach and female players and female coach to female players
I couldn't figure out why they were making such a big deal of that. Is it something Pauw herself champions and if so to what end?
If Ireland have a great World Cup this could be all forgotten about.
If it goes bad expect to hear more and more about it.
The more I hear about the Vera Pauw stuff, the less I think there's a huge amount to it.
Obviously, only being able to rely on personal accounts of things that happened means that we can't know for sure how bad things were, but that they didn't take any contribution from her, despite her willingness to give her side of things, makes the report that kickstarted all of this feel super flimsy. If she really was as abusive as some of the players/staff apparently felt, I'd be very frustrated by how the report was put together.
It seems female coaches are to be held to a different standard to male ones, in US at least.
The idea that a professional coach should be condemned for taking an interest in the physical conditioning of her players is farcical.
Not being dismissive of the claims, but I do wonder if part of issue with Vera Pauw is that she is Dutch? The character of Jan Maas in Ted Lasso is super direct and abrasive as a comedic device, but the Dutch can be quite pointed and maybe that's an element at play here?
I could listen to Ken talking shyte about spurious personality studies from the 1950s all day long
Joe Molloy on his high horse re: Pauw
They gave Kellie Harrington significant benefit of doubt. I don't really know why... If she wasn't a gold medal winning Olympian I don't think she would be given the same treatment.
I think they were trying to lure her on to be honest.
After listening to her off the ball interview i think it's clear she is not particularly skilled at interviews and wouldn't do well in any further interviews that may bring it up. I'd tell her to stay away.
I thought the weirdest thing Gavan Casey said was that Harrington is “incredibly well spoken”. I agree with you that the last thing she should be doing is interviews. Keep sctum and let her boxing do the talking. She is a boxer not a public speaker. If sponsors have issues with her personal opinions that’s a case for them, i don’t see much point in the trial by media. It only serves the media’s purposes, not Harrington’s.
Exactly. You are not allowed have an opposing opinion to the media or else you have to do an in-depth interview to explain yourself to them!
