Advice for €10k Car

My wife and I are planning to buy our first car in Ireland.

Our budget is €10k, we are looking for a small, economic, reliable and not too old car as we don't understand about cars/mechanic.

We saw Toyota Aygo (but it's too small), Yaris and Renault Clio. Any toughts about these models? Any another recommendation?

Nonsense. It's won award after award.

There were some limited issues with early ones but it's a well sorted unit now.

I've just moved on one in a car that I ran for 12 months and it was outstanding. Smooth, quiet, with a nice growl under acceleration too. It had decent power 125bhp and returned over 50mpg on average. In a Focus.

The 1 litre engines are one of the worst on the roads. The 1.2 engines are fine tho, and the diesels are reliable enough too

I love love love my Honda Jazz. Its very practical and super reliable. The back seats fold right down and it becomes almost like a mini van. It's really nice to drive. Good luck with your purchase!

Its not clueless. I'm many years on this planet and my Dad who is retired ran a family garage. I have driven many makes of car and yes French and Italian ones are they worst in my book for reliability and that's what I was referring to the original poster. My experience and my wider family experiance. I couldn't care less what anyone buys, but the heading on the thread said 'Advice' that's what I give. He cant go wrong with a Toyota has he mentioned yes more expensive and so is servicing them. At the end of the day Ricardogame will have to make a decision on size, cost and family needs also the expensive to running it.

Precisely, I have had a few Renault Megane 3's diesel and put over 300k on them with no major issues. As said above this is not pre 2008. A great engine used in a lot of different branded cars.

The savings you mention are temporary and won't last when there's enough of them on the streets and the tax take from ICE cars drops off. You can be sure that EVs will be similarly priced before too long - especially as Eamon Ryan and his lot want everyone cyling/walking or using buses anyway.

They're also impractical if you don't have private off-street parking and don't own your home (so as to install chargers). Also, for a 10k budget I can't imagine you'll get much of an EV for it anyway.

A Nissan Micra is a good reliable car - my wife has a 2006 model for the last 12 years and it gave her little or no trouble in all that time and still runs like a swiss watch.

We like to travel around the country sometimes as well and we don't have another car for long distances.

At the moment we are living in a apartment that doesn't have car park, the car would be parked on the street (not possible to charge it) until we move to a need place with car park.

I would consider a hybrid but it's out of our budget. 🫤

Out of interest why are you not considering an electric car? The mileage you said you do is within a leaf range for that price and will save you more money on tax, insurance and fuel costs. You could charge it cheaply on a day/night rate tariff depending on your supplier.

The Up is only available as an electric car now but they have been on sale with a petrol engine for the last 10 years. I would not worry about spare parts as they share many parts with other VW models. If you like the Up then look at the Skoda Citigo and Seat Mii also. They are all the same car as the Up just with different branding.
