Not a good look. I wonder did he go because this was going to come to light?

No, I was simply saying that it was OTT some of the criticism. He still has done nothing legally wrong, but I am well aware that as regards ethics and morals and optics, it looks bad.
Simple: some middle-ground, context, nuance, compromise is best in these situations. Far too may times you have OTT hysteria and knee-jerk reactions and vitriol.
He's still a person and still deserves to be treated with respect and dignity. I see no way back for him, but I also don't see a need to hammer him too much. The damage has been done to him already.
NKM has a lot to do with RTE, certain TV and radio shows only exist because their hosts/presenters are part of the NKM stable. This has to stop. All RTE staff must be classed as employees and NKM should only be allowed to get their RTE clients a certain amount of external nixers a year. NKM should not have any dealings with RTE.
Their union should have issued a notice of full scale industrial action unless a list of demands were met. Number 1 being that Tubridy woouldn't be back on the screen or airwaves.
What are the staff hoping to achieve on the Lunchtime protest? Any list of demands?
I was genuinely surprised at how damning she was of them given her history with the place.
The expectation that is being discussed here refers to how the mileage rate is calculated. It's not possible to calculate a mileage rate without taking into account depreciation and wear and tear. And for that you need to have an expectation of how often a car should be changed/lasts.
Nobody said anything about public servants being required to change their cars at this interval.
I hear Sean Quinn is a nice chap too. He too was doing fine until he wasn't and needed intervention from the public purse. The thing is once money comes from somewhere that affects us all, then niceness has nothing to do with forming our opinions, especially if you knowingly engaged in less than honesty activity.
But nice try on the thinly veiled "Ryan's a lovely person" post. I know him outside of RTÉ and can honestly say that he's the same as everyone else. He has his flaws and he has a projected "good guy" exterior, but underneath it all, he took extra money (knowingly given his Director role) from a publicly funded company while standing under a banner of taking a pay cut. He deserves all the attention he gets.
Why should any of his colleagues defend him? He knew what he was getting paid. He knew it was at odds with what was reported. He knew staff at RTE all took a pay cut. He kept schtum, pocked the extra and went on air week in week out holding others and politicians to account via his daily reading of the headlines on radio, his monologues and his general morality stance on a wide range of topics. His persona is at odds with the secret he was hiding for years. There are consequences to actions.
80k is a hefty charge , wonder is that nk?
Will he change his mind ?
And void of any charisma. Just like his adult self.
Hmmmm not seeing much "Be Kind" in this clip.
I don't know about you, but any narcissistic types I've worked with were not nice, friendly and good people. Far fecking from it.
There is no requirement or expectation around changing your car. When the employer pays mileage, the car purchase and replacement decisions are your own decisions.
If people are booking for conferences or training courses and not attending, you've got a lot bigger problems than mileage going on. There was a scam for Councillors travelling to courses, but Phil Hogan changes the rules around that some years back.
I'd be interested to see that formula and how often they expect a car to be changed, I suspect that it will be a new car every 3 years i.e. ludicrous and wasteful. It's not the 1970s anymore, modern cars last a very long time if reasonably well maintained and the wear and tear associated with driving them is not nearly a much as people think.
I did lots of driving for work when I worked in the PS for various different bodies. Actual work and attending conferences etc. I was also an expenses approver for a while and some of the "mistakes" I had to pull people up over were absurd.
Expenses were a regular source of tension and resentment. Some people would be extremely reluctant to do any work that didn't involve driving their car. Others, the "croissants and chicken dinners" brigade, would regularly escape from the office to attend conferences, meetings, seminars, workshops where they would learn fcuk all and be on facebook on their phones most of the time. Leaving the plebs behind to deal with the day to day work.
Also, the system is wide open to abuse. I was NEVER asked to provide evidence of my attendance when claiming travel for attending a conference. Neither was anyone else. I could have been sitting on my arse at home which I suspect is exactly what happened in some cases.
Also, here's some good stuff, the laws of physics don't seem to apply to these individuals given that they appear to be able to be in two places at once, they also seem to struggle with diaries and recording times correctly too, maybe someone should give them watches.
There is only one Ryan Tubridy in the country but there are approx. 1000 county councillors and over 300,000 civil and public servants. many will never/rarely travel for work but many others will be doing so regularly. There is likely to be a lot of waste and some skulduggery.
Well you were defending him until very recently.
On a human level it must be quite tough and stressful for RT at present.
Waking up knowing that nobody is really defending him, and many are highly critical.
He’s not some monster. I always got a vibe off him as a nice and friendly and good person.
serious lack of common senses/ill-judgment is all this is. And it’s hit him very hard.
Is it even monetary greed? I wonder did he really want the cash..or was it more a power/self important narrcissist type entitlement?
There is a procurement compliance question here. If they're paying a fee for a service, they should have gone through a procurement process to ensure that they're getting value for money on that fee.
So you agree with me?
Should go well.

RTE overpaid! I'm shocked
Fair enough - I'm away at the moment so thankfully haven't had to listen to her
It has been reported that the 2 x 75K payments incurred a fee of 80K to an intermediary over 2 years. ie 40K in fees both years.
Barter exchanges typically charge 10-15% of the transaction in fees plus a small membership fee. Sounds like RTE overpaid. It would be interesting to know if it was an Irish company that "facilitated" it or an international barter exchange. My guess is on the former. And my second guess is that the owner of the company is somehow linked to RTE. Just my opinion......
We get this
The thing to look at is how many big presenters have been turned over and moved ship since Pat Kenny. One of them you should be seeing 10% moving every contract round minimum
O'Toole made a good point. RT being a top earner in RTE was a newspaper headline every year I imagine. And I know his salary probably shocked most people. So he knew that his salary was in the public realm fairly regularly and yet he never once looked to correct the record. It's very poor optics.
That’s your measure you set your standards - something RTE does not do.
They just give nobodys maky uppy salaries and contracts for some unknown reason. *in most cases.
The elevation of these people is done all by RTE nobody comes into RTE with a reputation *in most cases again.
Isn't all this chat about subsistence rates for civil servants/teachers all a bit "off topic" and a bit tangential (at best) or irrelevant when compared to the completely unprincipled carry on of all involved in these under the counter payments that were made to an already expensive broadcaster?
Anyway, as far as I see it, everyone who was involved in this arrangement knew exactly what was going on, and that it was a complete financial sleight of hand manoeuvre. To top it off, there's the arrogance of the players in thinking (maybe also hoping plus a bit of prayer were involved and, just to be on the safe side - "be sure not to mention any names, lads" etc) they could get away with it.
I'd have thought that when the Minister received word that there was "a bit of an issue in RTE", her klaxons would have sounded and she'd have demanded a bit more information PDQ. Well, maybe three months is quick - it always depends on your perspective, I guess. Talk about chickens coming home to roost!
Yes, she is spot on as regards what the real issue is...
I wonder will RT wake up and smell what is is that is really galling for people....
To be fair to her - and I’ve been hugely critical of her and her reLationship with RTÉ over the years on boards - she’s not been found wanting on this one.
