Not a good look. I wonder did he go because this was going to come to light?

The UK has a population of nearly 70 million. Ireland has approx. 5 million. Pro-rata he’s pair far less than the Irish “stars”.
Note: I’m pretty sure you’ve underestimated his salary there btw, but the argument still holds.
plus the Beeb have a huge global reach with the world service tv and radio - I’ve watched it in hotels in places as far flung as middle America, Honk Kong, Japan, Australia any many more. And Match of the Day is a feature on those.
Despite what they’d have you believe there’s very little demand for RTÉ globally - and that’s if the bloody player even works.
Yes and the other big difference as far as I’m concerned is the quality of most of the Beeb people. Even at the mid level you’ve got Amol Rajan, Mishal Husain, Nick Robinson, Martha Kearney, Laura Kuennsberg etc
From reports today it was one of the sub-committees who first flagged it to the auditors, who subsequently dug further….and “we are where we are”.
At least 2 of those managed by NK.
Some interesting developments today… Dee Forbes comes out and has a go at the RTE board for not treating her with the respect an employee or person should be, then she stated her health and well being has suffered as a result of this treatment. So, kudos to her PR handlers, she’s now the victim ( well, in her own head anyway) then we had the Tubridy acolyte’s calling in to liveline, . One went as far as making a comparison with the media hounding of Caroline Flack and what’s happening to Tubridy. It was te “be kind” mantra….., it seems to be the phase we’re going through now. All of those involved including Dee Forbes and Mr Tubridy could do their health and well being a whole power of good by just being up front with the population and telling the truth.
He's just this uncle like fella that Joe and Jane Bloggs feel they can talk to and he seems to have empathy. Around Christmas if you picked up the average shopping centre Santa Claus and put him in for Joe and told him to go 'sure, sure, terrible' you wouldn't lose too many viewers.
This sums him up..
Six hundred thousand...and at the boom times, nine hundred thousand!
A guilty conscience cant be good for your health.
Or maybe they can see their their future earnings prospects dwindling.
Well the rumor in media circles is he’s on €1m+ per annum in Newstalk……but completely different as it’s not public money.
Sure Liveline is pure comedy at times.
There have been a lot of names given to the Tubridy payments over the last 6 years but in reality they're what were called brown envelopes in the 1990s.
Funny when you look for any commentary online regarding Darcy's salary. Very little to be found, as the consensus seems to be he's so useless and boring to listen to that no-one could be bothered getting upset by his wage
I hear he's getting under the table payments from Flahavans.
Dunphy has a second podcast up about it now.
They miss fooook all. Especially 345k over 5 years.
They knew well what was going on, the problem is only 4 auditors to choose from.
Very corrupt.
The auditors knew exactly what was going on.
You will find that their arse is nicely covered.
Materiality of disclosure or something similar.
Is there not some way for auditors to lose their qualifications if they are caught being complicant in hiding money or possible fraud?
The way doctors can get struck off?
I don't suppose anyone has a copy of when two BBC 5 presenters discussed the death of Jerry Ryan and were amazed that he was on 700,000 for doing the same job as them!
700k for talking smut Mon-Fri mornings on the radio. Only in Ireland
No, but Anglo Irish Bank's auditors Earnest and Young changed their name to EY!
Dunphy asking a lot of hard questions….
This type of comparisons are widespread here, a number of years ago my partner did a post graduate course in a third level institution here, I was amazed by how many of the lecturers were from UK based institutions, until one told the class he was in Ireland because the salaries were much more generous in Ireland.
There is but there is a lot of proof needed to this type of result.
Absolutely spot on. He was mediocre at best, and that is a generous description. Someone who makes a presenting job look easy, is someone who is very good at what they do. Tubridy never achieved that.
There is no justification for the salary that any of the main RTE presenters command, in my opinion. I would like to see any one of them trying to get a job with another station. If they did, they most certainly would not be getting paid what was handed to them so easily at RTE.
Mary Wilson on nearly 200k too, along with Dobbo.
Jez, how do you get a job in rte!
Not dissimilar with hospital consultants. It’s incredibly hard to retain young consultants in the NHS in Northern Ireland.
Why? When they move to NI from the UK (or further afield) they’re pretty quickly informed that if they were a few miles (in some cases) down the road and over the border their salary would be considerably higher for not just the same job - in many cases less hours, they can do private work on top of that etc. etc.
And it’s not just limited to the border counties. Indeed it’s not uncommon for some Consultants in some specialties to live as far away as Belfast and work in Dublin. I know a number of such consultants.
I have a severe allergy to Mr Dunphy but, out of curiosity, I might give it a listen later. It would appear this story is far from over...
I’d encourage you to park that allergy for this topic alone.
It’s excellent, as was his podcast last Friday on it.
I'd have a serious Covid induced dislike for Pat Kenny, but I believe he's in a different class as a broadcaster to Tubridy. He can do the nicey nicey stuff, and the fluff like Eurovision, but also serious current affairs interviews when called for, as well as moderating political debates. He has many strings to his bow.
I made a post here a few days ago accepting that as fas Kenny was concerned there was some in truth in the argument that he needed to paid big money or else he might get a job in the UK at mega bucks. Tubs got lucky inheriting Kenny's LLS gig and the bulk of his salary.
After I made the post I googled who was highest paid in the BBC at the time, with their population of 60million plus.
it was Terry Wogan with 8 million listeners every morning. On much the same money as Pat Kenny!!
According to figures leaked to British newspapers in April 2006, Wogan was the highest-paid BBC radio presenter at that time, with an £800,000-a-year salary. In an interview with Britain's Hello! magazine in its 30 May 2006 issue, Wogan confirmed this, saying that he represented good value.
Are they really that popular though? RTE Radio 1's ratings are pretty bombproof. You would of though Pat Kenny leaving would have been a big loss, but there was no drop in listeners. He currently has an audience of 174,000 on Newstalk. Similarly Eamon Dunphy left a Sunday show on on Radio to start a show in the same time slot on Newstalk. On RTE he had over 300,00 listening, a year later on Newstalk he had less than 50,000. People are more loyal to the station than the presenter. That and the fact that presenters leaving RTE have relatively few options should be factored into the salaries, but it never has been.
