Now this Prigozhin scuttlebutt could well be an omen of internal strife, but like I said confusion is the stock in trade for Russia going back the rise of the Soviet Union. Previously the isolation and the triple powers of the Czar and his boyars, the army and God kept the masses controlled. Communism buried two of those so Stalin looked to different methods and practiced this confusion, but putin's regime perfected it. If you can't trust any truth but Russia and putin, then the only truth is Russia and putin.
So how would this play to putin? His "SMO" is bogged down after suffering embarrassing failures from the start of his Three Day War. He may be looking for a different out. He could blame rogue agents internally and externally for hurting Mother Russia (playing to a loooong meme in Russian society) and Prigozhin(a very close guy to the throne)has named them; the military command structure and some among the oligarch cadre. If Prigozhin is still his mate, the army are his biggest threat. They always are to autocrats. This could be a way of getting out of his SMO/calling a magnanimous ceasefire, while clearing the decks of internal threats and keeping his and his 30 year extant junta in power.
We haven't had this much excitement since day one

I would not trust Prigozhin or his Wagnerites as far as I could throw them. By all means, let them tear each other apart, and the sooner the better, but forming any kind of alliance with them? Nope.

The column of musicians goes through the checkpoint Novoshakhtinsk, the length of the column is about 50 km.
At the Voloshino checkpoint, the situation is the same, only the convoy 80 km and continue to go.
VP and border guards do not interfere.
At first, 2 tanks drove up to Novoshakhtinsk, the musicians came out, talked to the border guards, said not to interfere, sat down and drove off.

If this really is a coup then, so far, it's going worse than that Turkish coup attempt in 2016.
Always seemed hard to believe much from Prigozhin but when looked back on, what he was saying appeared to be based on some reality.
Quite possible he has the pulse of many of the regular Russian troops and banks on feeding on their dissatisfaction, and that they will join or not oppose him.
Whatever, even if it's only half truths, the Russian public will have their carefully constructed delusions blown away by this.
Maybe there is a reason this is being played out on social media with Prigozhin looking for some new recruits from the general russian public.
Road blocks going up in parts of Moscow ringing where the leadership live, road south to Rostov being blocked by fsb.
There is a quote from a Russian book where they are talking about the history of the country, each new chapter starting with "And then it got worse".
All we need now is some exiled revolutionary on a sealed train...

As others have alluded to I suspect a ruse.
If a genuine mutiny surely they would have no hope unless significant numbers of Russian military either stand aside or join them. They have no air support... do they even have tanks or just APCs.

It certainly was a flight of fancy.
The more probable take is Prigozhin has heard he is to get a bullet and he might as well roll the dice towards Moscow and see what happens.
The history book on this is going to be superb reading.
The provisional Govt in Moscow is sending Russian men West to fight in an unpopular war, the soldiers are dying due to bad leadership, poorly led and hopeless resourced.
Or as somebody posted on Twitter-
It's elaborate theater allowing Russia to pull all their troops out of Ukraine claiming they need to stop Prigozhin's "rebellion" so they can end the war that way and save face.
Everything is up in the air at this stage. It's not over 'till the fat lady sings...

It all just feels very wrong. Why would Prigozhin pre-announce a coup? A coup can only work with the element of surprise. Also why would the Russian MoD attack ordinary Wagner grunts if they had a problem with Prigozhin? The natural target would be to just take Prigozhin himself out, and any of his supporters.
It wouldn't surprise me if this was an elaborate FSB stunt and Prigozhin was already sitting in a jail cell, or maybe even dead. Either way, this is the end of Prigozhin and Wagner as a semi-independent organization.
