Union Jack flying south of the border

I was recently driving in Co Monaghan through a place called Oram which is halfway between Castleblayney and Newtownhamilton on the other side of the border. I noticed about 5km inside the Republic there was a Union flag and an Ulster loyalist flag flying from a telegraph pole outside a house. A few minutes later in an area called Mullyash I saw another Union Jack on another pole, this was much closer to the border but still in ROI.

I couldn’t believe what I had seen. I have never seen that flag flying anywhere except the embassy and maybe a few pubs/hotels, but for it to be in a rural area like that is beyond belief. Some may say that I’m overreacting but this seriously comes as a surprise to me. Who would think this was a good idea and why that area of all places?

You just confirmed what I said! Sound like you have been listening to a couple of old fellas from the 1970s. The people on both sides of the border have accepted that there will not be a United Ireland without consensus and that means all sides are going to have to make very big concessions and one of the very big ones will be people in the south will have to accept a much more conservative state because northern republicans have more in common with the unionists when in comes to divorce, gay rights and abortion.

Your United Ireland would have to be imposed on NI and that would mean Garda and soldiers coming home in body bags and that is to big an ask of voters who don’t want to pay water rates. The biggest threat to a United Ireland is SF jumping the gun and going too early and loosing the vote.

I quoted figures from the recent census which were released a few months ago - nothing in my post from "50 years ago" or "1970's".

As for "consensus" - more nonsense. There is nothing in the GFA as far as the vote on reunification of our country is concerned about consensus, except that it will happen with a vote in favour of 50 percent plus 1. It's called democracy.

Again - Unionists are signed up to the GFA reunification of Ireland process, are they not? Either Unionists subscribe to the tenets of democracy or they do not - which is it? The point is - we should not pander to Unionist bulsh-t anymore - they need to realise the reality of their situation in Ireland - they do in fact need to be broken.

When England invaded, Ruaidrí Ua Conchobair was the High King of Ireland (without opposition) - therefore Ireland was a sovereign independent State in which Irish people were united by known and accepted factors which define a nation - such as language, law, and common descent.

I'm not one for flags or emblems at all -that's just my predilection and I don't criticise anyone who flies anything that's not an obvious provocation.

I can see why an 'Ulster loyalist flag' might raise an eyebrow but the Union Jack should not be a major source of irritation for anyone . I 've seen the Irish tricolour being waved at the Proms in the Royal Albert Hall and why not if someone wants to proclaim something like 'we're different but we're friends'.

I'm not disputing the illegal Russian invasion and occupation of Ukraine - it's what England has done in Ireland - including the fake vote in the occupied area given to the foreign ethnic Russian Unionists in an attempt to justify the partition of Ukraine.
