He’s mid level for knowledge and input in my opinion. He’s nice but not that interesting.
I do still view him through the prism of his first question to Stephen Kenny in his first press conference which was to ask him to ponder the international future of Stephen ireland. Maybe he’s matured a bit since but he would need to.
I think he has decent knowledge.
He is good to listen to and gets on well with Ken. He knows it isn't all just about the sport. I enjoyed his little "headbanger" anecdote.
I just can't help but think how poor the rugby guys are in comparison to the rest. Jamie and Mal are great (even though I don't follow hurling). Lots of decent soccer contributors. The GAA football was great with Oisin and Paul (hopefully Michael Murphy can improve). Are there any good rugby contributors?
I stopped listening to the rugby stuff a while back (not really into rugby but would listen after big matches) but I think the people you mentioned above have some character about them, funny people at times. The rugby lads all seem very rigid and a bit dull. They're all massively into rugby and I find some of the technical stuff a bit too much, perhaps someone more knowledgeable appreciates that though. As a football fan I don't really listen to tactics podcasts, it's more the stories and nonsense around football that interests me. Maybe there isn't enough of that in rugby?
Barry Murphy is very good I find,I'm not really into rugby so have no idea what Shane Horgan is on about half the time but Barry is not overly technical and has a good sense of humour
Yeah the rugby talk is dire. Like being at some corporate brainstorming sesh. Awful whiff of total bollocksology off all of it.
I'm not mad into GAA, but I can listen to it, as their guests tend to be more engaging.
I agree with you that most of the stuff talked about football is nonsense and it is about characters and that's what makes it great. A major factor is probably that it has Ken. The hurling pod isn't too much about characters though and it is still enjoyable. I listen to it and I can't name more than 3 hurlers.
In my opinion, I think the issue with the rugby analysis is... not the guests, but Simon. He is in control of the narrative and the questions, and this leads it to be overly technical and serious, and can suck the fun out of it sometimes.
Disagree, I think Simon is good. On the other hand I find Shane Horgan can get overly technical (and I used to play rugby) and dry.
I hope Ken isn't as Zen as he was this morning about Ireland as I honestly think Kenny needs to go. Results are horrific
Hang read his article in the Times a few minutes ago, I expect he has given up on Buddhism
The support for Kenny was always based on hope rather than evidence. I’m surprised Ken, who usually has a finely tuned bullshit detector, was willing to give him the benefit of the doubt for so long
That was an enjoyably angry post match pod. They should do more like these. Ken is on holidays next week, so I can only assume Kenny is going to be sacked...
Hope and a complete hatred for the end of trap - end of O'Neill years.
Murph really pissed me off on this pod. He seemed only delighted that it had gone **** and that Kenny should be sacked. I thought it was very strange. All the others seemed genuinely disappointed.
Is that not kinda in his nature though? He was joking after Galway's defeat to Kilkenny which probably hurt him more than last night's shitshow
Excellent reaction pod last night, I think they nailed it between them.
One pint...that's it.
I like Damian but ..
What's wrong with fish n chips !?!
What do you mean?
Damian was breaking down team formations a lot.... "if it's a 5,4, 2, or a zero point 3 on the wing... Which'd pull ye back to a weird 6, 3, 1 leaving ye flat on yer back".
And Numberwang is from a sketch show that in one recurring theme they take the piss out of convoluted quiz shows. It was about 15 years ago.
I enjoyed the Damien Delaney and Richie chat today about Stephen Kenny.
I have to say Delaney made his point very well about Kenny being tactically out of his depth. He has me convinced.
I wonder what the options are in our budget if we replace Kenny?
As I was listening to the pod, I was thinking the same. But then I thought of Brighton who lost Potter and got De Zerbi in. Not many had heard of him, but clearly the club have good people in place who know what they are at. Hopefully the FAI have someone who knows what's happening around Europe.
Employing someone from around Europe will mean they will have to relocate to the Uk or Ireland or else do the job off videotapes like trap. Given the FAI are skint the extra expense with such an arrangement makes employing someone from Europe unlikely. It looks like Lee carsley is the man being sized up for it.
Only just listening. Delaney was good, sounded actually angry about it!
I thought he put over the feelings of Doherty, O'Dowda and Smallbone very well and the manager's inability to adapt to save them.
Yeah, i enjoyed it too. I think it would have benefited from them all being in the same room. Don't feel like Richie and Damien had an actual conversation. Just took turns speaking.
I didn’t get the feeling that there was much rapport between them. Not that there was any ill feeling but just they didn’t seem to really know each other
I think Delaney is probably the best in the Irish media of the ex-players.
