If being an unaligned country with a large army is no deterrent to Putin's ambitions is it time for ROI to join Nato?
Okay so, Ireland is in NATO and it's weakets link, you attack Ireland and now you have all of NATO on your back? But if you're attacking a military alliance, then why are you attacking Ireland first?
Have these enemies decided to struck at the heart of NATO by going for Ireland? Invading an island is hard, invading an island to get to an island and then a continent, If you can manage that then you deserve the continent!! Whose attacking us and from what direction?

By the time the flotilla arrives its not carrying 100k troops.
And is probably not carrying the equipment to land even 10k troops.
The flotilla is watched 24/7 by satellites. Day/night. Cloud or no cloud.
On arrival in the north Atlantic its being shadowed by many nations ships/subs.
On approach to the European continent Chinese ambassadors are reminded that the EU has a common defense policy. And that EU is Chinas 2nd(?) biggest trade partner, with an EU trade deficit in the many 10s of billions of Euros.
Naval training exercises are announced right in the approach path of the Chinese ships.
Several nations airforces start flying in the area.
Because these coastal/western continent countries, such as France, Spain, Portugal, UK, don't know why theres an uncooperative Chinese flotilla headed their way.
And probably wont buy the explanation that 'we're just here to invade Ireland'.

No one is talking about direct military attacks on Irish soil with naval bombardment and air attacks and the landing of men and armour.
This new age of threats is to infrastructure, resources, water, energy, data, communications, healthcare, commerce and all those aspects which makes Western societies safe, effective and prosperous.
And all of those things need a military level of protection in this age. Whether that's surveillance, cyber defence and cyber offence, human intelligence, signal intelligence, airborne and undersea monitoring and interception, whatever.
These things need a joint military control. An expertise and hierarchy and discipline that no other organisation can match.
And Ireland is lacking in the capability to stand up these sort of structures at the moment. That is why we need cooperation and collaboration with partner nations with whom we already enjoy deep and trusted relationships.
In fact we already have that level of formal cooperation with the EU and North America on anti-terrorism and counter organised crime. Our Gardaí train with the FBI and GSG-9 and the Guardia Civil, to name a few. Our military officers develop professionally at Sandhurst and Greenwich, at Westpoint and Annapolis, with the American and Australian air forces. And also at Harvard and Oxford and the Sorbonne.
We don't need to join NATO, but we'd better get in step with the level they operate at, or we'll be the back door that some decker kicks in, be it physically or electronically.

The EU helps us with the electronic aspect.
We're not such an easy door to kick in as is being made out. There are hurdles to overcome before you get a swing at the door.
And those hurdles automatically filter out about 95% of countries.

There's no real relevance for us to join NATO. The reason it is being promoted is to have our money siphoned off while a few people high up in our govenment get a pat on the head and to profit. We've had a recent corporation tax intake and we have industries foaming at the mouth only to take it off us. We are still be billed for a hospital at over 2 billion and growing! Can you imagine some like this? No matter how much defence equipment they want to buy it wouldn't defend us.
This kinda money is wanted to be extracted. They'll go on about enemies here and enemies there but if we decide to join an organization like this then their enemies will become our enemies. And we'll throw all that UN peackeeping out the window, just so a select few in government gets to benefit, whether now or in the future at the expense of the rest of us.
Ireland already has enemies we have not fought ISIS for example has us on the list. Who has Finland attacked lately and are threatened by russia.
Ireland actually escapes most of these because it remains unknown to groups far away. We haven't had an attack in Ireland like that yet. Those enemies aren't being schooled and not only that but they're probably never thought that Ireland is a seperate country. Countries can do as they please like Finland joining NATO. We have a small select in this country that seem to be eager for Ireland to join this organization. These don't benefit the people but they do benefit people who stand to benefit from issues like this. I already gave a reason a few pages back about "The Coalition Of The Willing" in which most of these eastern european countries had no problem attacking Iraq and went along with the U.S. Now we are supposed to righteous on that same side because Russia is attacking Ukraine and now a threat!

Part of the deployment training was fairly violent Riot training in Gormanston (it was treated like a bit of a free for all by the rioters (other DF personell)who got to have free reign with bricks and batons on their trainee colleagues)
Irish soldiers were also involved in containing similar riots in Kosovo in the early 2000's

As discussed there are very important distinctions between being in an area of conflict as part of the UN, or as part of Nato.

No, I'm very familiar with your hypocritical moaning about a mission that you're saying "no thank you" to, that the Irish have already taken part in, and dealt with situations you are saying no thank you to, and are still involved in currently, in a more limited manner.
You need to write a letter, address it to the Minister of Defence and send it to 1999 highlighting your grievances... be sure to include SFOR and IFOR missions also (which were NATO led).

You relies Finland had troops in Afghanistan since 2002, they were there for 20 years helping the Americans

There is no valid argument to join NATO. Ukraine has been in conflict with Russia forever and the last territory between Russia and the NATO defence line, it isn't like Putin picked a random European country to invade.
So just ignore those Russian ships snooping around undersea cables or Russian Military aviation flying through Irish controlled airspace with their transponders turned off. Just leave it all to NATO neighbours and do sod all to help?
What the war on Ukraine does is reveal the attitude of the Russian regime, an attitude not confined their immediate neighbourhood.
