Johnson and Trump, f***ed on the same day.
So the man who damaged the whole country and its politics irreparably for his own ambitions is now slinking off into the night like a disgraced prostitute? Can't say I'm surprised. We've paid in blood and money for this man's ambitions and he's never cared one whit.
Can he seriously run in the by-election shortly after resigning from another seat? And if he can (very likely given there seems to be no rules on anything in the British parliament), would the same issues he is facing and potential suspension not still apply even if he is in another seat?
Maybe they are hoping to push out the by-election until the current storm blows over, in which case Dorries resigning now wouldn't make sense. I can't see how her resigning could be part of a grand plan to help Johnson, more likely she is only in politics for personal gain and she is simply no longer able to gain personally from it anymore.
Johnson is clearly deluded enough to believe he will be an MP again but running before the next GE (at the earliest) isn't realistic.
Where does leave his honours list? He has effectively resigned in disgrace.
There's plenty of instances of MPs resigning then running in the subsequent by-election. Think Zak Goldsmith is the most recent.
Then if he tries for Nadine's seat, only one candidate should stand against him.
Already approved today, sans Mad Nad and a few others.
You would have thought him resigning in disgrace literally a few hours later would throw a huge pall over the whole thing - one assumes that the list was approved in the belief that the person who created the list would not find himself in public disgrace shortly afterwards (as in hours later).
They're already seen by everyone as dirty anyway. Not the first time.
The honours system is an absolute farce. Imagine being expected to call someone "Sir" or "Dame" just because they basically wrote some large cheques to a political party, or in the case of this list, were prized for their unwavering loyalty as opposed to their competence as ministers. It's nothing new anyway. David Lloyd George was infamous for selling honours a century ago. A farcical system.
Another conservative MP resigns with immediate effect, This keeps up and we will have a GE before Xmas.
That's an insanely safe seat for the Tories
I think it's all about trying to attack Sunak by having them all resign at the roughly the same time.
Whatever brings a general.election closer and gets them.out of office is fine with me.
Shades of the end of the FF-GP government here
Yeah would need actual tactical voting, and a hell of a lot of Green and Lib Dem votes to give Labour any kind of chance.
Boris Johnson has quit as MP.
In other news some newspapers are up for sale.
Just some random unrelated events.
I blame Blair for leading the UK down the road the mess the UK is now in. Boris Johnson was a disaster. But at least the UK is not in recession now, unlike ourselves in Ireland and in the eurozone. Plus the UK is not flooded with half their hotels in their tourism counties filled with Ukranian refugees, paid for by the taxpayer of course. So maybe - just maybe - they are doing something right?
Does the government not have to put its new amendments to the Troubles legacy Bill to MPs again before it's passed into law?
By having the Bill watered down in the House of Lords, isn't Sunak misleading the House of Commons?
Is he really having the Bill amended at Biden's behest - as a Tory source is effectively claiming in that article?
"Biden's behest" would be dropping the bill entirely, as its an utter disgrace as anyone other than a few Tories led on by Mercer can see.
But the current system of dealing with Troubles legacy is untenable.
Many convicted terrorists were released early under the GFA. For example, Torrens Knight, who committed 12 murders in 1993 - 4 in Castlerock and 8 in Greysteel, was found guilty of all of them but was released after only 6 years in prison. Under the current system, anyone convicted of committing as many pre-GFA murders as Knight was would be released after only 2 years in prison. Is that a worthwhile use of public resources? There is a serious backlog in the courts in Northern Ireland - worse than in England.
Rumours that two more MP's are on the verge of quitting.
Really throwing toys out of the pram time.
I remember being at a friend's wedding when Truss beat Sunak. That was barely 9 months ago. I can't believe there's a chance we'll have to endure more of their tedious shenanigans after everything they've put the country through.
If you're looking for evidence that the current Brexiteers and the Mail and Telegraph are part of a far right cult, this was the reaction of a BBC audience when they heard that Johnson had resigned last night:
So the Republic who some here like to gaslight us into thinking is a shambles compared to glorious Albion are now paying for 250 nursing positions in the North because the UK can't afford to.
How does that work: how does the HSE pay for 250 nursing positions in the (NI) NHS?
It's student nursing positions so I suppose they pay for the education costs.
Don't believe a word of this "The UK is not in recession" talk. Walk around the streets you can feel it.
I imagine it's some sort of 'cross border initiative' under the GFA and they can get around it by saying they are sending nurses up from the ROI as well to participate. The NI Health Executive are probably fine with the idea....objections would be most likely to come from DUP and TUV types.
I don't think anyone with their head screwed on believes the UK are apparently ascendent, while the EU stagnates or recesses; was the same self-mythologising crap spouted during CoVid and the vaccine rollout - trying to peddle this same idea of UK striding while the EU dithers. The stats clearly only tell half the story, as you say the story on the streets talks of tangible deprivation. But I guess if one keeps peddling a lie about those filthy, batty Europeans having it worse, suddenly those Warm Banks don't seem so bad. Keep Calm and Carry On, wot wot?
