How did people find this year for mastitis?
Think I had more cases this year than any other.
They mostly were ewes with twin lambs around 4 weeks old. Most would have been spotted fairly early but some were already turning black at that stage.
I didn’t do anything different from any other year except some of the cases were in ewes that were in a well sheltered field with highish grass where they wouldn’t have been grazed in previous years.
A couple cases were in bought in hoggets but from this year on I should have enough of my own replacements that I don’t need to buy any.
They seem to be keeping up fertility with mainly slurry, the fatten 150 bulls every year so the slurry would be very good, over 150ton concentrate going into the cattle would improve the nutrients on the slurry,
They have to feed the ewes when they're three or four weeks lambed to prevent tetany. Buckets, boluses or dusting pastures didn't prevent tetany for them, I'd imagine the high fertility is causing that tetany.
They have a new sheep shed, well worth seeing, some good ideas in it. likewise the new handling unit, Eddie and Aidan are both very particular and aidan is good at engineering
What did you think of there borris type ewe wrangler?
i ve never used them, I'd rather breed my own replacements,

Have a ewe with front foot after swelling up and whole front leg looks swollen too, Checked the hoof looks like a nasty abscess at the back of the hoof, let some puss and blood out sprayed with terramycin and have her on pen strep for 3 days. Is there much else I can do?
She became lame quite suddenly over 3 days which leads me to believe it could be a thorn or something (cant see anything obvious) as opposed to foot rot which in nearly all my cases starts as untreated scald over a long period of time.
Was it a sheep welfare inspection by any chance ?
any of ye that are into paddock grazing and splitting paddocks, do ye find your sheep get unsettled? Find mine aren’t content at all, shouting at times, especially when they see me and they make a big dash for the gate. They are in fine condition and the lambs are thriving away nicely. Lambs got a mineral bolus last week but sheep only got a mineral dose and that’s a long time ago
Be careful with this weather. Has two ewes badly struck with maggots over past few days.
its terrible never as bad before here with maggots
4 cases here so far,I'll power wash them this week with cypergaurd should get me out till they are shorn within the next fortnight
You shouldn't go near the sheep for weeks after using cyberguard , a local shearer here won't shear them if there's any smell of dip ,
Will be a few weeks before there shorn
Warm humid sticky weather cat for maggots, I sheared mine the 5th of May thankfully but would definitely have got caught if I hadn't. We seem to be getting far longer summers, may till September in terms of flystrike.
How long after shearing are they OK ?...I seem to think 6 weeks..I stand corrected ????
Thoughts on K/O% for vendeen cross lambs on suffolkX & texelX sheep. First time using a vendeen so just wondering what people think the kill out would be. Have a good few single lambs born 10th-17th March comming into 40-43kg yesterday, they are decieving to the eye in terms of weighing alot heavier than they look.

Would have always done lambs here with Scabivax as there’s Orf in ground from years ago.Not available this year.
Came on 1 lamb in a bunch of 50 yesterday with it on the mouth.Lambs will be on the ewes till mid July.
Wonder should I separate him and his ewe out from the bunch to try and limit the spread to other lambs?

It's cheap at 3 euro. Anyone shearing 150-200 ewes a day in that heat deserved every penny of it.
Ivan Scott clipped 300 ewes and hoggets in a while of a day for a neighbour. Some operator
My shearer clipped 330 for me between 8 am and 8 pm one year
