Nothing remarkable about that performance at all when he controls the media and the state in Russia and has any opposition leaders poisoned or deported or killed. Now if there were fair elections in Russia the last 25 years do you think Putin would still be there. I doubt it.

I was being a trifle sarcastic, I know very well how things are done in Putins Russia. I lived there for several years. it was always corrupt, even in ( and especially in) the communist times, Putin just refined and modernized it. ( Modernized it? I should have said "Mafiaized" it) Its very well explained in the documentary Trauma Zone, worth a look, if you haven't seen it already.
Over the years Russia has negotiated with lots of countries but we are led to believe by you that negotiation is impossible with them now.
The abuse of trust has occurred over time, it's a process. Putin stated Russian troops were not in Crimea, they were. He broke international laws and treaties by annexing the territory. He had officials forced at gunpoint to accept a referendum which was a sham (fake results). He then proxy invaded S E Ukraine whilst denying it. He stated he wouldn't invade Ukraine, then he did.
What little trust the civilized world had in him has totally evaporated. Hence he's not trustworthy in negotiations. He chiefly uses them as a stalling tactic or for domestic propaganda purposes.

For the 5th or 6th time, the Russians, as they invaded, held "talks" with the Ukrainians. Like the Russian referendums on occupied territories these were widely seen as shams. You've cherry-picked speculation from the internet which suggest the talks were reaching some sort of "deal" in April.
Many analysts have discussed the above at length and it makes sense to me.

The US has come out and said they are against attacks inside Russia. If it is the Ukrainians, expect no repeat of this sort. America defines what's permitted.

What they actually said is they do not condone attacks on Russia and will not allow the use of American equipment. The difference is subtle but a difference there is.
The definition of condone is to give tacit approval, therefore to not condone is not to give tacit approval, they have neither approved or disapproved. Essentially they are saying they do not care as long as no American equipment is used.

I have just rewatched the press briefing, what they said is they do not "support". Support to my mind is provide active assistance, so still the same, they really do not care.
They are allowed, absolutely nothing in international law which prohibits it.
Proportionate lawful retaliation is not only allowed it's accepted, I think it was the British Foreign Secretary that underlined that point when asked yesterday.
They have an "agreement" with the West that no supplied weaponry will be used on Russian soil.
In effect the West are allowing Russia to have escalation dominance, destruction of the victims homeland only. There has never been a steadfast logical explanation for this and even if there was it certainly doesn't exist now.
The mood music will switch on this like it has on every other weaponry they were told they can't have and they eventually got anyway.

Vlad Vexler is a London-based Russian philosopher. In my view, his YouTube channel of short videos is one of the most informative online commentaries on Russian politics related to the war and on how the war is perceived by ordinary Russians. In his latest video below he comments on yesterday's drone attack in Moscow. He explains how depoliticised Muscovites will process the attack and how the Kremlin chooses whether or not to use such events to shape public opinion.
He believes it's a mistake to moralise about the rights or wrongs of Ukrainian attacks on civilian infrastructure in Russia. Moralising this is an ethical misunderstanding of war. He sees the attacks as neither right nor wrong but as a direct and logical consequence of 15 months of Russian aggression and brutality and of waging an unjust war on Ukrainian territory. He expects that the attacks will become more frequent and more impactful as the war comes back to Russia, limited only by Ukrainian capacity and any constraints imposed by western allies.
Be warned though: if you believe that the drone attack in Moscow yesterday was a Russian 'false flag' operation you may find this uncomfortable viewing. Vexler asserts that you're a victim of 'the gamification of war' and will challenge you to examine if you've stopped thinking for yourself.

If I was a Russian civilian in Moscow I would be feeling demoralised,whoever it was.
