That is a huge drop in a 6 year period. The times they are a changing.

The proportion of the population who identified Roman Catholic as their religion fell from 79% in 2016 to 69% in 2022.

There was a fall in the proportion of the population who identified as Roman Catholic from 3,696,644 (79%) in 2016 to 3,515,861 (69%) in 2022. The No Religion category increased from 451,941 people to 736,210. The Church of Ireland category showed little change but remained the second largest religious category with 124,749 people (2%).

I don't think this fall is surprising. Look at much of Europe, and the concomitant decline in Christian beliefs in those countries, particularly Scandinavian countries. And that's without even considering the reprehensible impact that the Roman Catholic Church has had on this country.

That said, I would be cautious about celebrating this reduction in religiosity. Not everyone does, but some do. The religious impulse itself can present itself in many different ways, in either secular or religious form. When one form of religiosity is in decline, often other forms of belief system can replace it - where evidence is suspended in favour of the personal belief that an individual or group within society can hold. And I reaffirm, the religious impulse manifest itself on a secular basis just as much as it can on a religious basis.

So whilst I think the decline in Roman Catholicism is unsurprising, I wouldn't translate that into some kind of glee - because often one form of religiosity invariably gets replaced with another.

In other words, the core insult to the human conscience has not dissipated.

it's you who's granting the power to the church to consider you a member. if you truly do not consider their rules to be valid, why would you validate them by insisting they're binding? it makes no sense.

Once you are baptised, the church consider you a member. A member of a club that you may not want to be in.

If it's not important, then why did they take away the official way to leave? There was a process by way one could leave, but they got rid of it around 10/15 years ago, now Noone can officially leave. Why, it would make you wonder...... 🤔

What exactly are "Catholic teachings" if they are not the bible??? Are there sections in it that say "Not literal" and others that that are "very literal"?

And how do some know more than me? The bible is the same for anyone reading it but does someone else have some sort of divine phone-line that I don't have?

the baptismal roll is not a list of 'members' of the CC. it's a list of people who were *baptised*. that's it. i was baptised and the notion that somehow makes me a member of a club i rejected 30 years ago does not stand up.

That's not what the "á la carte approach" is. Á la carte Catholicism is obeying some Catholic teachings and disobeying others. Catholic teaching has never been to take the Bible 100% literally.

Biblical literalism is Protestant in origin.

Plenty of people happy to go to church , not as many as before but still a lot more than most other countries.

im one of those people and happy to say a few quite prayers and meet some neighbours and get away from the stresses of life for a hour . Can’t see why other people would be bothered why I or others go to church .

Again they have not. They've integrated science into their science by assigning divine intervention/plan into the mechanism of the universe.

It doesn't have to make sense, to you. It's religion, it just has to fit into their world view.

The fact that, as a religion, they admit that they don't have all the answers to the physical world makes them doggedly resilient

Having been baptised a catholic is making no impact on your life, or to the church either.

Having been baptised isn’t preventing or forcing you to do anything. So what do you want exactly?
