Mediterranean cycling holidays that will get your heart racing
Curated cycling holidays to refresh and invigorate mind and body in beautiful locations in Italy, France and Spain...
"The roads are near-empty of cars, and without the noise or imminent danger posed by passing traffic"
Why tout such a thing as an advantage on holiday, when it's consistently highlighted as a threat to life, business and civilisation at home?
The article references what looks like an off-road gravel tour in Sardinia so away from the roads/motor traffic... And if you've ever driven in Sardinia then staying away from the roads is definitely a good thing! :D
p.s. it's a stunning island mostly unspolit by mass tourism like the mainland..
In a complete different tone to the last Indo article about cyclists...
I did appreciate how they refer to "people who cycle" twice in the opening paragraphs to attempt to humanise cyclists though.
Pity the Indo couldn't have found a better image to use!
That would be asking too much!
The Indo journalist and editor don't know we drive/ride on the left hand side of the road in Ireland?
just a stock image i guess.
i am usually bemused by the advice to do the dutch reach so you see cyclists approaching from behind. if you can remember to do the dutch reach, surely that's no easier than remembering to just bloody look anyway?
"Dutch style" roundabout with "Irish" Style drivers in D15... what could possibly go wrong!? :-/
More details released, what a needless, tragic event
i see the census 2022 results have started to come out; not sure when the transport related stats will be released, but could be interesting.
British Cycling are in absolute rag order, they’re now cancelling the u23 road program, so there’ll be no Tour de L’Avenir etc for young riders

Removing residents’ parking for cycle lane on Deansgrange Road will ‘destroy our community’ (msn.com)
Top quality Maude Flanders impersonation from Breda there.
That's even more shocking, I think everyone in the racing community knew or knew of this young lady, a tragic needless loss of life is right..
I hope the Gardai get to the bottom of this incident and bring some peace to the family...
I love the response from the DLR rep. "We offered you 11 different options, you shot down A, B & C, here's D, which was approved by the council, check out the video of the vote on our website, work will begin shortly"
The unfortunate thng is that while it is obvious that all she appears to be concerned about is not having her own free parking space removed from outside her front door, you undoubtedly will have the usual idiot councillors who will latch onto her selfish nonsense and cause further delays to this project!
To claim that a project that is trying to create a safe and healthy method of travel for kids to school is going to reduce peoples safety is pure nonsense.
"We’re not against the cycle lanes whatsoever."
Just not this one, that affects me.
They should just go back to the original one way! Shankill to City Centre, Deansgrange is (imo) the worst part of the commute. Notwithstanding that, it's only recently I realised what a massive missing piece of the jigsaw in the local area when I started following the through the parks routes from Shankill to Blackrock.

From reading the article you'd think they lived in the middle of Siberia, which in the depths of winter would be a challenge to get around, but in leafy Deansgrange there's about 5 restaurants 2 mins walk away, Supervalu 5 mins walk...
The old Mooneys garage is up for sale so will end up being apartment blocks, so where do they think the residents of that apartment block will park all their vehicles..
France to invest €2Bn over the next 4 years to encourage cycling...
Even looking at areas such as bicycle production so sounds like they've thought this through.
I wonder do the French get the same kind of NIMBY objections to any form of cycling infrastructure that we get here.
Anywhere there are cars, there will be NIMBYism.
Some of you may be familiar with Nadia Williams - an interesting talk here on her Phd thesis (Effect of Social Psychology on Urban Design):

They absolutely do, there was uproar over covid for the changes they did around Paris, but local government for the most part doesn’t care and just ignores them.
More of the same, parking trumps safe infrastructure
”However, this was shot down by Keith Murphy of Lloyd’s Pharmacy, who has personal experience of the Dublin works and its effects.
‘We have a pharmacy in Blackrock and that scheme has actually decimated that store. We are on the verge of closing it. The shopping centre has three tenants out of 17.’”
I’ve never heard such absolute bullshít go completely uncontested
Its a creeping narrative that at this stage has almost been adopted as a raison d'etre by the media - cycling infrastructure is bad, inherently affects commerce and nobody other than hippies and Mamils want it.
I'm actually surprised that the Govt. hasn't caved - there doesn't seem to be any corresponding voice from the cycling community to counter this crap or at least get a bit of positive PR going. Probably another case of the Greens actually having backbone and principles and nobody giving them credit for it.
i've mentioned before - at a DCC meeting years ago (several years before covid), a senior engineer from the council pleaded with those present to lobby their local representatives to push for infrastructure. some people in the council actually give a **** about this but never had the political impetus behind them to make changes; but now we're seeing a shift to it becoming more standardised.
Doesn't this shopping centre have a car park? He might want to pay more attention to the comments in the google reviews as to why people might not be going to this particular pharmacy.
From a cycling perspective, he kinda doesn't need to because the spurious claims are never usually contested. Reminds me of a certain jeweller who blamed cycle lanes which hadn't even been built for why his shop was closing down!
that jeweller was the dumbest idiot i've heard of in a long while. 'oh, i've decided to sell my commercial premises, so i'll go on the radio and tell everyone it's impossible to do business from that address'.
But the muppets on social media latched onto his nonsense and repeated it as Gospel. Even the mainstream media repeated his nonsense and usually in those media stories there was no mention of the other (more costly) works - just a poxy €60 million cycle lane that would displace hard working people trying just to get to work.
