No cow been killed in 3 abp plants till the second week of June down here.
That is a change compared to last year. They must be kill cows elsewhere in ABP plants. This time last year it was nothing but cows being killed in a couple of southern ABP plants straight from the mart as well.
It shouldn't matter if he has a job then either. If you have a decent size farm with a fairly decent set up 300/ acre net margin is achievable on decent land. 40 HA farm that is 30k, average SFP would be 1Ok, Acres 5+k, ANC 3k.
That is nearly 50k of an income and about 20k shielded from Tax, so a real income of 60-70k. Of course you would have to lose the LC, the newish tractor and 2.5k gallon slurry tanker. About 30 ish hours work a week on average throughout the year Cheap firing and heating.
If his wife is working he can mind the children as well saving the average working couple 200+/ week
WTF should he be subsidized he could do a bit of contracting or part time work.
Getting it really hard to get the blks eating nuts this year compared to other years giving a small amount the last week some cattle eating a little others no interest at all. First time ive seen this they got the same nut in the shed 🤔🤔

Is it exactly the same nut. Millers have a habit of changing the ingredients. I am feeding barley/ maize/hulls and they empty the troughs in ten minutes and will stu licking for another 10-15 minutes
40 hectares of decent land isn’t the case for most people, I’m from a disadvantaged area of the country unfortunately my experience of beef farming isn’t so rosey.
Reading your example I’m just wondering why so many farmers have off farm incomes at all sure it’s a fantastic paying job

It freely available from any miller. I price it around the different millers locally every year. Kerry group is about the only miller I never got it from( I often buy straight maize in bags off them).
Dairygold, O'Connell mills, DOC, Liffy mills etc all will mix it for you
Because you would run a 40HA drystock farm well set up in 1-2 hours a day and 5-6 hours over the weekend.
That’s one efficient operation that farmer would be running, 60-70 grand plus the wife’s job. I don’t know why there isn’t more prosperity in the sector tbh
There is plenty of prosperity in the sector. The lads that struggle should stay away from suckler cows, finished what they reared and ran systems suitable to land type.
On poorer type land generally farms are larger. Organics are an option on these farms

Same nut I ordered not sure if they changed the ingredients. Grass getting tight where they are now will leave them a few days before moving on and see will they get more anxious for them.....
It not generalizing. It's a statement of fact. The vast majority of livestock farms can be ran in sub 20 hours per week if fairly well set up.
Yes it's sub 10% protein ideal for cattle on grass. It recommend by Teagasc. It's bulky so millers will not bag it ( like barley it would have to come in 20 kg bags.
I have used just maize and hulls when barley is really cheap that works as well. I replaced the soya hulls with oat hulls just year but was not happy with it. However grass growth was very poor. Next time I try them I will reduce to 20-25% of the mix
If you can get a bit of molasses pour it along the top, it also keeps crows away as they are afraid it gets on the feathers

Any self employed person tries to reduce there tax liability as much as possible. This is whether it a shop owner, a publican a tradesperson or a farmer.
A car worth 20 k will give a capital allowance of 1650, if it's a commercial that is used for work as well it's 2.5 k/ year. Other car ''expenses'' could amount to 3-4k in tax allowable costs.
Electricity and phone 1500-2k/ year. Heating another 3-500. Cat and dog food 200/ year. Small tools used for personal use 2-500/ year. The list is endless.
That 8.7k could easily be a a real.incomenof double or treble that

Why all the questions about feeding meal to finishing animals at this time of the year. Fr, Her, AA will all finish easily on good quality grass. A few paddocks wrapped in mid May will generate good grass in June. Continentals different - will need meal to finish. Any more than 3 kg/day is inefficient. Grass quality is key for any finishing system.
100% agree with that. Plenty of quality grass and drining water and sunshine will flesh them up nicely. Might take a little longer but will be the most efficient way if ones systems allows.

Talking to a northern lad yesterday said he couldn't understand the 3 week wait to kill cattle in munster.
It all depends on your system. I am stocked at 170 kgN/ HA and I am stretching my land area to keep the N figure there.
Feeding a bit of meal allows me to get cattle away faster. As well I buy the lighter cheaper store generally and feed no meal during the winter so I have leeway on costs
Killed cattle last week. Two black FRX hung 348 and 331 kgs the heavier was a P+ the lighter was an O-. They netted 1680 and 1650 approx. Hung another couple if Friesian another O- 341 kgs 1715 and an O+@352 kgs making 1840.
None of them cost more than 600 as stores. But to keep the numbers I carry I have to start slaughtering in late May/ early June. 3-4 weeks extra starts cattle going over 30 months and losing QA not so much on the ones slaughtered last week but the cattle that I will get away in July and August because I have managed to these lads away last week.
