Pretty much this. Unless we plan on doing a solo bid for the Under-21 Euros or the Women's Euros we don't need ten 20k capacity stadiums. What we do need are UEFA category 4 stadiums for European Group stage football for which the minimum capacity is 8k plus a lot of other required stadium infrastructure. I think ten quality stadiums with around 10k capacity is much more preferable and realistic.
All sports get some amount of funding and help to build stuff but if you think we are going to have 10 x 20k stadia and 10 x 10 you know nothing about the League of Ireland. Most clubs wouldn't even want that and could use the money in much better ways.
DCC are going to do things for the likes of Bohs and Rovers because there is political capital there but those are 8k stadia not 20k which is fantasy land stuff.
I think you'll find that they get a he'll of a lot of what they ask for or just go ahead regardless and get bailed out later. Tallaght stadium was supposed to be a DCC stadium for GAA and soccer, ends up as rovers defacto home ground. Paid for by DCC. Dalymount redevelopment is also being heavily funded by DCC. Aviva, they went ahead with their hair brained multiyear ticket sales in lieu of funding their part. Ended up a washout.
They will very little if anything.
They'll get fook all and rightly so.
They have a long way to go before people even start to think about trusting them with anything again.
Not lacking the the neck department though.
They wont be getting most of it. If the FAI had that power why were are the stadiums kips. How do they suddenly have the power for 10 x 20k stadia gifted from the government.
The problem is they'll get most if not all of it. They've never been shy with the begging bowl and they rarely have to leave the paw out too long. At a time when the GAA should be downsizing stadiums and going for quality rather quantity, this shower are looking to upsize when they wouldn't fill Parnell park on a good day.
That would put our capacity way above Denmark and Scotland who have similar populations and historically way way stronger leagues.
The FAI just can't help but make fools of themselves.
The FAI have the biggest office building in the NSC for their executives but need €47 million to bring soccer facilities on a par with the IRFU and the GAA, says all you need to know about the FAI.
I taught some county boards where stone mad with there ideas of large capacity stadiums. The Fai have taken it to a new level looking for 10 soccer stadiums to be upgraded to 20k around the country
I remember talking to someone on the co board at the time and it was purely down to the number of stiles/exits. A second game ie a minor game would have seen fans coming in and leaving over a longer period of time whoch would have allowed an increased capacity
There are all sorts of regulations now as mentioned above.
In 2019 Mayo Played Donegal in an all or nothing super 8 game in Machale park,it was sold out and capped at 25k,the place was 2/3 full, you can find it on YouTube. If there was a minor match beforehand it would have been upped to 30k which is about 75% of what it can hold.
Similarly in the famous Newbridge or nowhere game, sold out and a lot of Mayo people didn't travel without tickets (as it happened I was left with about 8 tickets which I ended up just giving away to kildare fans on the street) About 7k people in the ground that day,the far terrace behind the goal almost empty.
A big professional operation like Croke Park I would say is far more likely to make adjustments based on the reports so less likely to have a capacity drop.
Yea i think it was 2004 when the GG was redone so not exactly old, was hill 16 2005? i wonder if the same applies? I noted at the bottom right section of the hill that is now usually cleared free for a full house (sometimes stewards would gather there), but i used to remember seeing it full with people, also there is a section of terraces in Semple stadium that is closed permanently too which is a pity
15 years for Thomond and 20 for the Gaelic Grounds but Thomond looks an awful lot fresher.
Although they are very slowly cleaning up the Gaelic Grounds and it was looking a bit better on Sunday.
They are practically the same part of town in terms of entering/exiting so Thomond Park naturally won't have the same issues clearing out 25k as GG will 44k
Safety issues. entrance, egress not good enough in some cases possibly. fire risk in others.
Rugby stadiums are newer and maintained far better. Thomond Park is only 15 years since a full redevelopment.
The capacity is constantly dropping due to fire officers reports I assume because crowd control rules are tougher these days. Not sure why they close a section though rather than letting it spread out.
It doesn't happen in the rugby stadia because they are way smaller than the big GAA grounds so the enter and exit problems are not there and also are newer and better maintained. Most GAA stadia are kips with old turnstiles and outhouses for toilets.
I'm sure its been talked about on here before but can anyone tell me why the capacity of terracing has been reduced? I cant help but notice the 80% filled terraces in the supposidly sold out matches most recently at the Gaelic grounds in Limerick. Capacity used to be 49,500, now i believe its down to 44 or 43,000, i imagine its the same for the rest of the GAA stadiums too?
This isnt the case for rugby matches in the likes of RDS and Thomond park so just not sure the thought behind it
Good point but I'd guess a 34k stadium would be far cheaper to maintain then a 34k stadium. Don't forget a lot goes on daily in croker between conference rooms, museum, the tours etc. Electrical bills must be huge.
Maybe casement will cost a few K to run daily but less if it sits empty between events. Concerts will cover it.
Meetings, conferences, events - MICE - are what keep many stadiums on the go. the big games, events are what pay big bills but its those meetings, conferences that keep stadiums going all when there isnt games be it the meetings held in corp boxes or a conference for 1000 people or an awards ball etc etc
I don't know if that's necessarily true. People tend to forget the day to day costs of running a stadium. Croke Park costs €13,700 per day just to keep it ticking over and needs €60m in refurbishment. If this new stadium is built to UEFA standards you could expect the costs to be only slightly less. And this is a stadium that will have to survive on secondary revenue from concerts, maybe college football (american) and the odd soccer match. There won't be more than 2 to 3 games per year there. So whilst it'll cost next to nothing to build to the GAA the maintenance will be colossal.
Detailed design i belive is complete. You would imageine tenders are ready drawn up so they just have to be sent out
Have to agree only NI to blame. The GAA have indeed hit the Jackpot if these funds do come through.
Would free up a lot of fund's to invest elsewhere. Meath, Louth and Kildare in particular desperately need New stadiums.
I don't think in this case it would be Britain shafting NI, NI needs to sort themselves out and get things moving. They have essentially been given a blank cheque to do so, if it doesn't happen they will have nobody to blame but themselves.
Wouldn't be surprised to see Northern Ireland once again shafted by Britain as soon as the tournament is awarded.
Before work can start, the project has to be tendered. I assume it would have been in the media had the tender process started, I haven't noticed it but also possible that it has started. If the tender hasn't been issued yet, a Jan start is unlikely.
If the IRL/UK bid get the euros in september when will the call have to be made for casement. Id presume to be open in time buckets would have to be the ground no later the Jan 24?
Couldn't help but picture Luton town when I saw how close the houses were.
The site plan for Casement, which gives you an idea of how compact the site is.
That road on the right side of the map is the M1 motorway, which essentially cuts off all access to the stadium from the that side. Everyone has to access via the Andersonstown Road, which is the road to the left of the stadium.
I see clones is at 29k for the ulster final. What works have they done to get it up slightly?
