I think perhaps it was brewing before the second student and it just sent him over the edge and he couldn’t deal with it. It’s not plausible that he’d accept one but not the other. He probably thought it was contagious 🙄😂
I don’t think he was okay though? I think he said he almost had a nervous breakdown and withdrew because he was “tempted”. Some sh*t like that anyway 😂 All because of a pub. He could have had an aul lemonade!

They seem to have very specific views and there’s no wiggle room there at all.

Zero ability to even contemplate the idea of compromise or "laissez-faire".

Standing outside of the school doesn't mean that he's unavailable for work. As long as he's applying for the odd job, technically he's available for and seeking work. It's a long time since I was on the dole but you'd occasionally be called in and asked to show proof that you were looking for work. A few rejection letters would suffice the people in the dole office.
As long as they aren't breaking the law, people on the dole can spend their day how they please, which probably includes standing outside the gate of a school.
Not a supporter of what Burke is doing by the way, just commenting on whether he'd qualify for the dole.
I think it’s the lack of socialisation growing up. They never had to compromise or be empathetic to anyone else’s views or feelings. I’m not sure about you but I can’t see any result of nurturing from parents in that household. It’s sad.
No question that their lack of exposure to the reality that there are different beliefs and opinions in the world has reinforced their total intransigence to anything that doesn't perfectly align with their world-view.
As I have said all along - there is no end game and it is likely he could be still going everyday for another 10 or 20 years

I think I'd have to challenge him to a duel...to avoid any awkward conversation and liven things up for my colleagues.
Each of us could nominate a second ,choose a preferred weapon and draw lots for the location of the duel
It wouldn't have to be to the death, a simple forfeit in the event of being judged to have lost by an independent committee whose members would be drawn from the staff and include as wide a cross section as possible would suffice.
Infinitely better than a conversation and a boon to all staff members present who would only be there out a sense of duty and obligation and only itching to leave at the first sign of an opening so they could get home to the relative safety and comfort of their respective dwellings etc

On reflection...I'm probably being too reasonable, simply proposing a duel runs the risk of failing to make it a reality
I would need to employ subtle or perhaps not so subtle tactics to trick my quarry into proposing said duel themselves.

Even though the Burkes are enjoying the media attention, that's not why he's turning up. They used to drive regularly from Castlebar to Dublin to protest outside the Dail. They'd even make the trip when it was closed for the summer. Enoch probably thinks he's laying some really good groundwork for the next life.
