Coming here and destroying documents should be punishable, passports are needed to fly but conveniently gone when here

And they never had a poll since. I wonder why!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 18,706 ✭✭✭✭Goldengirl

    Where was this poll enricoh?

As I said before legally their hands are tied and if they want to disagree with it publicly (politicians that is) they have to open a whole new politicolegal can of worms,

Looks like they are not ready to go down that route yet.

And I don't think that is right by the way if as you say it is true that 84% of Irish people want to call a halt. If that is true then they have to address it.

Maybe you could publish a link to that poll?

Roderic and Darragh could put them in Dail Eireann as they are prioritising "asylum seekers" in tents over Irish homeless who don't even have tents, it's like the Irish is the last priority of this government, they should just man up say we have taken in too much and stop taking more

They come here because the highest court in the land has ruled they must be housed by the government and they know they will be fed and given money. Once they stay long enough they will be given residency and avail of the own door houses promised by a government minister. You can be sure the people traffickers are selling Ireland like this.

I think if Red C or Amarach or another survey group done a poll the majority would think we have taken too many and should put a limit

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.

How can a person who has destroyed their passport be vetted?

Last year over 5000 people arrived here with nothing to prove who they really are and they are all still here.

    Me bollix it is.

There's loads of people all around the country who are not "paid ngo shills" welcoming people into the country in lots of different ways

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? Can you explain this more? Why do you think he is inciting violence?

Why would they stop taking more. A lot of people are still not getting that this crisis is great for the government. They can park the health and housing crises now for the long term as the refugee influx can be pointed to as the cause and we are in difficult times etc. Disagree and you are racist. All it took was the government dumping refugees on the streets and in random spots without sufficient supports.

    Fair enough.

Thanks, I think... Gritting my teeth reading Gript 😬

Those numbers 65 to 83 are people saying we don't have enough services depending on area, but when you drill down to those saying they don't want refugees it is much lower.

50% happy to support a migrant centre near them.

    That's not a majority against.

Younger people more against than older people. I suppose that is to be expected, with housing such an issue especially for every young person.

    It was done in February.

... That needs to be redone alright.

So don't let international asylum seekers in then at all, until the whole system is overhauled and agreed across the EU. We can't differentiate those who are genuinely in danger in their home country from those exploiting the system to gain entry. This exploitation will only get worse unless the government stick their fist in the gaping plughole quickly. We're an island, at least we have that advantage.

I'd be encouraging them to set up camps in the grounds of RTE in Donnybrook. They seem fully supportive on all fronts so presumably would welcome with open arms.

Some of those were Ukrainians. Others were genuinely found to be fleeing war.

It is a small proprtion overall although its causing difficulties.

You know every country who accepts migrants has the same issues .

Iteland cannot absent itself from its legal responsibilities and expect to be treated as an equal.

But yes they do need to take stock.

What do you make of "the country needs to stand up against it"

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 41,236 ✭✭✭✭Annasopra

Is that it? That's your idea of incitement to violence?

That poll is repeatedly misquoted. The proposition put to people was "There is a limit to the number of asylum seekers and refugees Ireland can cope with". I would have answered 'yes' to this one myself if I'd been polled.

This is not the same thing as 84% of people actively calling on the Irish government to impose quotas on refugees - something that would probably be illegal under international law, but also totally unworkable. What do we do when the supposed refugee quota limit has been reached....deport women and children who have arrived at Dublin Airport straight back to Afghanistan or Sudan?

And note how the media and their pundits have nothing to say about this. There's not a single social campaigner allowed on the airwaves that is in agreement with 80% of the population. So strange that all those raggle taggle musicians from Apollo House have somehow been learned to stay quiet. Instead we are bludgeoned by NGO creeps and IT Opinion writers with b******t stories just so that the word "immigrant" can be included in the strapline.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,046 ✭✭✭✭Strazdas

The poll didn't say that. The proposition put was a very abstract one, that there is an upper limit to the number of refugees Ireland can take. I would have agreed with this proposition myself : only a fool would claim we could accommodate another quarter of a million refugees or whatever.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,876 ✭✭✭bokale

Surely asking is there a limit is meaningless. I.e could ireland manage 2billion? What's the point of such a poll?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,945 ✭✭✭dmakc

It's still the issue as long as Leo/MM act like we can manage 2bn

You might not be able to put a hard limit on it but you definitely can make it less attractive and more in line with what's offered in Germany or France.

Even outside of that, there's no reason we can't be as strong on it as Denmark are. You still accept some but not have a free for all with extremely generous benefits compared to elsewhere
