I can't say I ever felt they used any of the themes enough
but I dunno.. Maybe there's some art to how much to feed the audience. I was happy with it being used at the end of 1.
Thanks to the YouTube algorithm, I discovered that the train crash from the trailer is, of course, a real train crashing from a cliff. Fantastic.
Of course it looks like there's some digital airbrushing going on to remove the "joins", replace the ramp with a bridge, but wow. You just gotta love the commitment to old school effects.
You cant beat real school effects, there is too much ropey cgi in modern films.
Poor CGI robs media of tension and realism and it is good to see a return to practical effects instead of green screen and CGI.
The less CGI as possible the better.
I wonder how many times that did it.
Also a shout out to the folks who have to clean up the wreckage.

I see it crashed into a big pit of water, presumably so it wouldn't get completely destroyed - but drying it off? Fixing what broke anyway? Remounting it to the track? Oof. I'd wanna speculate they had 1 shot at this before it went over-budget. Bet this was workshopped endlessly in an office before they went anywhere near location.
Apparently, and I forget to look this up if it's true, but there was supposed to be this huge action setpiece during the sequel to Romancing the Stone. Shot at night too for extra logistical insanity. It all went perfectly ... then it was discovered the director forgot to get the cameras rolling.
Fired so.
As if we didn't know it already, Tom Cruise doesn't do his stunts by half. A bit of a corny bit, done for a recent Convention, but it only underlines Cruise's commitment to his stunts. Would hate the pressure of being the guy to make sure those straps are OK before take-off. Done on the first take, or did it take a few goes? 🤣

I suspect like a similar stunt in Rogue Nation, Cruise is probably attached to the plane through his clothes, and can barely move. I wonder does he have special contact lenses or whatnot - cos the wind blowing in his face would surely make eyesight negligible otherwise.

Jesus he did that stunt 6 times for real. Madness. I'd debate the sanity of Cruise and his involvement with the Scientologists, but the man seems obsessed with single-handedly yanking blockbusters back to the era of visceral, hardcore and practical thrills. Can't argue with the results so far; MI: Fallout and Top Gun Maverick contained more white-knuckle excitement than the last 10 years of blockbbusters combined.
Still think the man might yet kill himself once age can't keep up with his enthusiasm.

As mad as he is and even with his crazy religious beliefs I will give him one thing he took COVID very seriously and was huge very public figure who endorsed the wearing of masks and social distancing.
I think he only makes movies now to fulfil his own thrill seeking adrenaline rushes and I’m glad he films them.
I actually watch a full documentary series of him pushing his limits doing these stunts.

New trailer! Kinda weird that in the moments we see from the stunt we know Cruise did for real - the motorbike driven off the cliff - the masking of the ramp and other safety structures with CGI have made it look fake, lol. All the CGI is a bit ropey, if I'm honest. So hopefully they haven't over-brushed the wires on this one.
Better a bit of CG than trying to explain why there's a big old ramp on the side of a cliff 😅
Seriously though, I guess it'll all depend on how spectacular the full-length stunts are. If the rest of the crazy base jump is intact, then I think I'd be more willing to forgive the CG-ness needed to get to that point.
The train sequence seems to be a fun throwback to the train sequence from MI:1, with a bit of The General thrown in for good measure.

Looks decent enough. Cruises face seems to have a different look in some scenes. I'm not sure.
I do love that they CGI the bits other films do for real like putting in a mountain run to cover the ramp before the jump and do the real things other films would CGI like the train and bike jump.

Yeah could be.. certainly that bit with the old boss is very flashback feeling from their first mission impossible film.
Well his boss from the very first movie is back for this one so I guess it’s possible there is some flashback to 1996…
I haven’t seen FALLOUT yet and had intended to watch all the movies before DEAD RECKONING which I thought was coming in August.
To the best of my recollection these films have not been connected by any plot threads with the exception of the fate of Michelle Monaghan’s character.
I rather rewatch the series at a leisurely pace rather over the next week or two, so does anyone know if it will be necessary to have seen FALLOUT before the new movie?
