Kinda ironic that this showed up in the press in New Zealand the same week as Ireland's fake-article about fake-tan.
But I think this one is real, and same criticisms probably apply, possibly even more so here.

For people who follow that logic, then yes, it is a problem for Irish people doing it. Cultural appropriation etc.
But in India itself there are problematic aspects to Yoga
The world's most popular Hindu guru, Swami "Baba" Ramdev said yoga can be used to cure diseases like cancer and HIV
TV swami offers a cure for all ills | India | The Guardian
and homosexuality (his idea not mine!):
Hindu guru claims homosexuality can be 'cured' by yoga (telegraph.co.uk)
And the BJP's promotion of "yoga day" in India and internationally:
The Hindu Nationalist Campaign to Promote Yoga | The Nation
I don't follow the logic? A few people in New Zealand don't like certain aspects so it's a problem in Ireland?
The OP must be seriously bored.
Jesus, more culture war nonsense? If you like Yoga, do Yoga. Simples.
was this thread brought to you by chatGPT?
"So stripping yoga off of its spiritual, ethical, philosophical context and reducing it to posture and fitness exercise equals cultural appropriation."
I would rather it was stripped of all those things since I want to continue be an athlete but I don't want to become a Hindu.
Ryan Giggs and Roy Keane extended their playing careers with yoga and stayed relatively injury-free.
the article seems to suggest that the issue is they're not stripping it of its religious imagery.
"Sacred symbols used decoratively, statues of deities placed on floors ... are some of the reasons why critics say yoga isn't being respected culturally."
Has anyone ever really thought about how maybe Christianity is just middle eastern cultural appropriation.
I mean its a middle eastern religion so everyone else just cosplaying. right
OP should we cancel the christian cosplaying in the western world?
Is some random article in New Zealand relevant to Ireland?

..
Everything that's ever happened in the history of the world is " problematic " to somebody.
I still haven't stopped laughing at the IT tangate episode last week,I hope that may have been a turning point.
There's a charity shop in Knock that had leaflets for public consumption on the dangers of yoga.....and I don't think they meant over-stretching doing a crab pose!
It's the backwards crab you should be weary of overdoing. 😄
Jesus this fabricated news jargon is definitely only going to get worse with AI anyone bored out of their minds can be published with a rediculous lack of fact checking
Yoga.. People getting bent out of shape about nothing.
Don't know wether I feel hot or cold about it
Yoga itself: not appropriation. Plenty of yoga going on all over the place, grab a mat, stretch, fart, repeat.
Sacred symbols used decoratively, statues of deities placed on floors and an expectation to look a certain way are some of the reasons why critics say yoga isn't being respected culturally.
That specifically however, sounds like the appropriation, not the yoga per se. I don't see many yoga classes passing themselves of as a pseudo religious experience, just a great way to stay in shape and get a good fart out.
I learned my yoga from GTAV and Fabien, I exhale through my anus
For some reason this crap software is refusing to let me quote the line about the "guru" claiming that yoga can cure homosexuality.
Rather like the UKIP guy claiming that harsher PE lessons would prevent it - having clearly never seen a gym in D8 - someone has never been to a yoga class in a posh bit of a city centre before!
the software is trying to help you by refusing to copy into record something so stupid.
this guy thinks so
Except that a stretching class without the spiritual elements is just a stretching class: it isn't yoga.
Irrespective of the flatulence.
Reads like a Waterford whispers article!!
Someone is afraid of competition.
Yogurt is good for you.
I don't think it's problematic.
Probiotic definitely.
I like strawberry 🍓 yogurt.
Especially on porridge.
Live and let live I say.
Not the first time Bishop 'Fonzie' has added to the gaiety of the nation...
First they be tryin' to take mah dreds and now they be tryin' to take mah stretches, mon.
The end game here is that we should all just sit alone in empty white rooms thinking about what we've done, forever.
Unless white came from somewhere else, f********ck...
