Is Ireland's fake tan use problematic?

An article in the Irish Times is suggesting Irish women shouldn't wear fake tan because it's like a costume that lets them dress up as another race without having to deal with racism.

I can probably count on one hand the amount of times I've seen someone with fake tan so dark you could mistake them for another race. Mostly it's just very obvious they're white and wearing tan because they're more orange than brown. Is this really a serious problem?

There is a backlash against the left and the Democrats amoung Hispanic people in the US because of them using Latinx.

Apparently the word is difficult to pronounce in Spanish and generally Hispanics are happy to use the terms Latino/Latina without getting all hung up about it.

It's bullsh1t of course but the wider issue here is why the 'paper of record' which you could argue has been the only half decent newspaper in Ireland for the last number of years is publishing this bolloxology? Has the Irish Times made a decision to become a pound shop Guardian and seek to sell copy by concentrating of this sort of rubbish? Who sought this clown out for her opinion? Did she approach the paper with an offer of an article?

The more that once trusted sources of news and information like RTE and the IT go down this road the more people will disengaged from the news, which is not a good thing imo.

Unfortunately the IT has been going down this path for a very long time (and I say that as someone who has had a subscription for the past 20 years or so). The fact that their hardcopy circulation has more than halved over the last 15 years, while digital subscriptions have only risen by about 8,000 (little over 10% of the paper subscribers they've lost) tells it's own story. Half those remaining subscribers are probably state, semi-state, or civil service subscriptions who never read the thing.

Every week I promise myself I'll cancel my subscription.

Off topic but if there's one example that shows there is a still a golden circle of influential people in Irish society who can have serious stories like this brushed under the carpet and it have absolutely no effect on the people who should have been hung out to dry for their part in it then it's this story.My bile rises every time I hear one of that insidious toxic family on the radio or TV.

Looks like this could be a watershed moment for any remaining credibility of the "paper of record" - it really looks like the article and image are AI generated. Or if they were produced by a human, an example of epic trolling.

It did occur to me earlier that there was something strange going on when I googled the "author" and could find nothing. Highly unlikely that an ultra woke activist type would not have a big presence on social media.

If the article and it's author are the product of a generative AI? I'd hope that the editor who decided the tripe was for for publication is handed a p45 and told to jog on.

I have posted elsewhere about the danger of generative AI to some writing roles. It is insidious and if nothing else?
