JG like a lot of other “greens” quickly forget it was modern agriculture put them thru college and freed them (and their parents) from a life of drudgery, thinning turnips, picking stones, milking cows by hand, etc.
That’s what a lot of us would still be at if agriculture wasn’t mechanised 50 years ago, incl. JG and the rest of the condescending types who now lament the modern world.
I've heard him a few times on the radio and he usually boils my piss. I'd say he'll buy out the siblings and rewild it. It's the only thing he can do after all the years of calling for the like. And if he doesn't, I hope Matt Cooper when he has him on challenges him on the sale

If Matt doesn’t challenge him on that sale I’ll definitely be writing that email, not that it’ll make any difference but I’ll feel better for it😂

Any of ye outwinering yearlings, is there much of a difference in kale and rape or is it much of a muchness?
You d be as well leaving the autumn grass and strip grazing it with bales as sowing rape,not much in it.kale on the other hand is a great crop if you can get it in in the next month.

I've out-wintered FR heifers and dairy-beef weanlings on rape and it does a great job on them. I haven't ever planted kale but I think it needs to be put in earlier in the year (July-August?) whereas rape can go in later.
Rape suits me as I take two cuts of silage off the field/paddock and then set the rape after that.
I had only 190 bales of silage last year and i outwintered all my dry cows on a neighbours stubble ground. I had 60 bales laid in the field and moved 3 round feeders daily. It worked grand for 70 cows. Cows calved down lean but hit the ground running and zero hard calvings.
It depends on the situation I suppose.
Kale has to go in earlier, June, as mentioned,and has a high yield. Rape can go in as late as 15th August and still grow a nice crop.
With kale, your losing 6 weeks grass growth to get the heavier crop, and you'll do more damage grazing. It's also harder to get young cattle to eat it down as the stems get very strong.
Both work well with bale grazing too.
Then there's redstart which is a hybrid of the two, but I've never grown that.
Field can be set in the next month so may go with kale. Have a shed if things get very bad but would have more space for incalf heifers this way.
There's quite a difference between varieties of kale. The likes of Maris Kestral would be higher quality, but lower yielding than the likes of Caledonian and have a higher leaf to stem ratio. Also kale is frost tolerant, whereas rape wouldn't be, although very low temperatures (below about -10 I think) will kill kale.

What is the best spray to use to kill weeds(mainly docks,nettles and thistles) in paddocks that cows have grazed?
Fully housed here from October 10 to the 10th of April the past winter, and everything was milked throughout, its a green washing excerise at this stage.....
I don't think co-ops are sticking in lads over the inspections like they used to be with production down again this year, they need the milk, and don't want to be pissing suppliers off to much
