The bookies have slashed the odds on Glasgow now making it a firm favourite.
I have a range of weekends with free cancelleation booked
San Marino are going to have four semi finals!
Yet the UK came second last year and presumably would have won had the Ukraine not been invaded.
That myth was debunked about 15 years ago at this stage
Look at some of the recent winners - Holland, Israel, Portugal, Austria. Ireland can 100% win again with the right song.
I take even Dustin The Turkey and Dustin Rhodes Gold Outfit could not help Wild Youth get in
RTE can only let through lounge cabaret pop or sub u2 sounding dirge. That's no good in 2023.
When they try to do rock, it always ends up sounding like one of the tracks that missed the cut for Achtung Baby.
Last years entry was good but the stage presentation was bargain basement. Poor girl. She deserved better than what RTE came up with for the presentation. Shame on RTE for that. Either $*** or get off the pot and give the contest to Virgin Media.
There are no bands in Ireland capable of something like that lintdrummer. Well none that RTE would pick anyway.
I’d say Sinéad O Connor is the only one who can bring us back. I simply assume we aren’t in the final these days.
I think we are making the mistake of trying too hard.
If a song is catchy enough it has a chance, but whatever Energy you bring to the song has to be genuine.
The Finnish song will probably win. It is total phucking garbage, but the performance is unique, the tattoo on his tit is unique and there is something likeable about the entire piece, albeit is woeful shight altogether.
I think we need to concentrate on what we do well. A strong emotional ballad will do the trick, it just needs to get written and performed correctly - look at Switzerland?
No Irish entry was getting through last night
Lyra is exactly the style we should be sending
This.
Because RTE neither know/nor care how Eurovision has changed and moved with the times, post- ‘Euphoria’ - using social media and TikTok/Spotify to gain a following beforehand, discussing what’s going on in modern songwriting and production - and actually ACKNOWLEDGING the songs that other countries are putting out.
It’s a world completely (and literally) foreign to them.
And hence, you have D’Arcy’s radio show with that embarrassing and small-minded ‘Wa-hey, Irish Abroad P1ss-up’ mentality.
That ‘It’s all just a bit of fun, who cares? We’ve won it more times than you, oh look, Dustin’s here!’ attitude.
Doesn’t wash in 2023.
Says you like it's a fhact.
We'll agree to disagree
Serbias song is one of my favourites!
A good Irish entry would've gotten through. Just a shame we haven't sent one in years.
Everything as expected last night and only one thing that made me shake my fist at the telly...
It's UNI-CORN! Two syllables, not UN-I-CORN.
For that reason and that reason only it's Israel nul points from this armchair.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again…
feck trying to win it, we clearly can’t ever do that again, so just use it as a promotional tool for Ireland…. Send a trad band to just tear it up on stage for 3 minutes, fiddles, flutes and bodhrans.. the lot… pints of Guinness and all…..and if there even is singing, make it As Gaelge.
RTÉ would never hand over the running of the Irish delegation over to Virgin Media (and give up their week long jolly to Europe), but why not give it to TG4 (at least the song selection), and make it distinctively Irish? No other country can do that, and who cares if you win or lose or come last in the semi final…. Go out with our heads held high…
RTÉ are clearly happy though existing in the space where we go to the semi final every year and that’s our lot…. I think they would treat reaching the final like they would treat if we won the whole thing 30 years ago (euphorically)….. I think their lot is ‘hopefully good enough to reach a final, but nowhere good enough to have a chance of winning a final’. It’s a safe space for them to exist in…. There to take part and no more.
Each to their own but sounded like terrible tripe to my ears.
She should go back to the lap dancing club she came from
If the UK didn’t buy their way to getting into the final every year I think they would struggle because like us, they don’t have too many neighbours.
I agree the mindset in RTE is dated. But it’s not RTE who composes the songs. Everyone is invited to submit songs. And it’s the public who picks the song from the selection. RTE only airs it. We just don’t seem to have a pool of talented songwriters. Or maybe those that are writing good songs don’t want to be involved with the ESC circus.
I think some of the performances on the big stage have been hit and miss also, including staging and sound work.
It's a song contest but the performance is a big part also.
RTE make a selection from the entries I believe. Don't know who makes the selection,but...RTE.
So Ukraine winning shows how it was political.
Marty Whelan on ‘Morning Ireland’ right now using the Louis Walsh-style spin - we (RTE) didn’t do anything wrong, but sure, leave Wild Youth alone, they’re great lads.
Who picks the the six songs to appear on the late late show? There has to have been better songs than some of them.
I tell a lie. Weren't they selected from a panel on the show?
I agree, it was very kind of the Austin Powers movie set to loan him the outfit in the first instance
I think though it also reflects the status of the Eurovision in culture in many countries. Ireland doesn’t take it very seriously and has rolled it into some kind of X factor like format.
We have a big serious music industry where I suspect a lot of artists would avoid Eurovision because of how it’s positioned here.
Need to stop using the Late late show and come up with a better system for selecting the song. Maybe over a few weeks and let as many people hear them as possible. What is the average age of the viewer of the Late late show?
Do you think the reason Wild Youth won was because of the age of LLS viewer?
Doubtful.
Wild Youth have a fan base here, enough to influence a public vote unless it's a very large vote.
And remember when there was a larger public vote we sent in Donna and Joe once.
We need a better system, each of public vote and juries have their drawbacks at times.
I don't think the Late Late Show should be the mechanism for selecting the song, although playing the songs on it does let more people here them.
we sent dervish and then gave cathy Jordan a song totally unsuited to her voice. whever I've seen dervish live they've been brilliant.

They almost won it last year.
This neighbourly thing is rubbish as often neighbours don't get on. Ireland gives the UK miserable scores most years.
Nobody likes Israel and they can still win it. Netherlands only has 2 neighbours and has won it.
It's all about the song, UK sent rubbish songs for years and did badly, often getting zero points, Last year they upped their game and did well.
The reason we've not qualified in last few years is down to quality of the song and the act. Simple as that.
